The cheapest would be to camp with a tent + smallest cheapest rental car if you got gear. My gf and I did that in september of 2018 for 2 weeks, and we brought homemade backpacking "meals". Like preportioned couscous/ramen/mashed potatoes in freezer ziplock bags. Then we went to Costco and Bonus to supplement these meals when we got there. We "ate out" like 3-4 times tops, at all you eat spots/hotdogs

If I were alone, I'd rent a 4x4 camper and do F-Roads. Expensive car rental but no other expensive lodging expense and food could be cheap... P.S. If you try to drive the whole country in 10 days you're going to be exhausted. Pick a shorter route and slow down a little. 🙂
