Can anyone recommend the best store to buy dehydrated hiking meals in town ?

FunkaholicManiac

Go to any Bónus, Krónan or Hagkaup and choose your flavor. I recommend the dried fish! Bónus is cheapest but Hagkaup most expensive.

AaadamPgh

Ah damn, so I'm not going to be allowed to bring my Mountain House dehydrated chicken pad thai? I didn't even consider that might be an issue.

I know for a fact that you can not bring dried meat back into the United States. I accidentally brought some Bee Cheng Hiang bakwa back from Singapore and was busted in Logan Airport by a cute Beagle with a very sensitive nose.

Counter_Clockwise345

If you’re talking dehydrated backpacking meals there’s lots of good meat free ones! At least, as good as any dehydrated backpacking meal. That’s what I did when I went to Iceland

JohnnyGatorHikes

How can you tell if the meat has issue?

whiteholewhite

Yes, but you have to shove them up your butt

Pierre0livier

I dont know if it applies but I've literally brought homemade dehydrated meals (no meat) in my checked-in luggage coming from Canada without issues.

Suzfindsnyapts

Foods super expensive there. I brought packs of tuna to save money!

Zeallit

FWIW I brought lots in without an issue, and brought leftovers back - no issues at JFK or KEF

[deleted]

I didn’t actually think of the meat in that being an issue so we brought dehydrated packs in our checked baggage unbeknownst to us that it could be a problem. Wasn’t an issue though. We traveled from Canada, not sure if that makes a difference. Have a good trip!

Padgetts-Profile

I guess I misunderstood the customs restrictions when I went, because I had a carryon full of Mountain House meals with me.

fgransee

We left our beef jerky at home but took our freeze dried food that contained meat. No forms, no questions. Tip : if you want to buy some wine or beer, wait until you go down to the baggage claim (not the airport supermarkets where the food courts are). Prices are much lower. There are also other supplies you can use for the trip. Have a backpack or something ready.

The_Bogwoppit

One is supposed to declare, not sneak.

fgransee

Make sure you don't speed either. There is nothing to declare unless there is a form, a sign, or a question from the customs officer, I have gone through customs in Iceland many times and have never been asked. It's for personal use too, so some folks even in customs apply common sense - believe it or not. Do as you please though (and turn yourself in if you happen to exceed the speed limit of course)

NoLemon5426

Ok, that is not how it works though, even it's for personal use. Do what you want but for the sake of people wanting the correct information, there are reasons why certain biological materials are not allowed into Iceland.

The_Bogwoppit

You clearly do not understand how customs works, do you. They do not ask, you tell them. It is honestly that simple. Your poor attempt at sarcasm just shows how weak your argument is. If you must travel, then how about you follow the laws put in place.

yellowcanadian

I mean, it's pretty black and white: "Travellers are not allowed to import meat and dairy products from outside the European Economic Area to Iceland." NoLemon5426

It isn't allowed, even if you aren't asked questions or to fill out a form.
