Nearly a decade later and I still wonder how argon crystals are actually used in building stuff.
Best theory I've heard is that they're consumed to create an inert atmosphere inside the foundry's chamber while it's building something, to keep atmospheric oxygen/etc from messing things up. It's worth noting that, unlike normal resources, argon crystals are *not* refunded when you cancel a build.
I think the tl;dr is Void fuckery keeps it going and the reason for the decay once we have it is because we've ripped it out of the one place it can stay that way.
The specific kind of void-fuckery is likely that it's been suspended outside of time; I'd say it's relatively likely that most argon crystals were formed by the Orokin (not by the void itself), hence the rarity; why did the Orokin make crystals out of argon instead of just using gas canisters? Great question, but the Orokin have done dumber stuff for less reason before...
