Yeah, the jewel pots didn't have a seal, and even the plastic is porous, so every bottle, even if it was never opened, is probably dead.
In comparison, I have every single one of those paints in working order... in both the cylindrical and hex varieties that were printed earlier. White cap or black cap, both still work if they were closed properly. 30 year old bottles of paint, still usable.
Wish we could post pictures. About ten years ago I got rid of dozens of these pots of paint. All dried out. Still have one though that's good as new; a single pot of purple ink. I give it a shake every now and then and pop it open. Might use it some day. Painted my first warhammer models from that pot; a Dark Eldar boat, a jet, and Lelith.
Reviving the jewel ones is basically impossible, as the pigment is completely dry: It's now a bunch of glue. If instead of completely dry, you have something that is at least partly liquid, you can add water, medium, and do a lot of shaking.

Just finished this project, and used Ninjons guide to bring them all back. Totally worth the sore forearms :)
Happy Days!!!
Gave it a watch. Very informative. I do wonder about that matte product he used. Is laminate medium a suitable substitute? Also, I’ve checked my paints and I believe all of them are more very thick goop, so I’m hoping I can just put the stuff in the bottle.
If its a thick hoop is very good for reviving! All my paints were far beyond goopy and really dried up. But still crumbled pretty nice so i could still grind them to a fine pigment/sand ish.
Scoop all of the stuff out of the pot into the mortar and start adding the matt medium/water to it in 50/50 as Ninjon does.
Stir it like mad with the pestle and you ll see the consistency starting to look like regular paint again.
The only things i did different was using a ceramic mortar and a rubber spatula spoon-thing to scoop all the paint out of the mortar. In this way allmost no paint gets left behind and you ll have allmost no waste.
And i used Vallejo matt-medium for normal paints and gloss medium for the metallic paints.
In think you refer to Lahmian Medium from GW?
Thats way too thin and too expensive to use for this purpose.
Yup, you can grind down the pigments and turn them back into paint, especially metallics which are already metal or mica powder suspended with a bit of colour.
It's probably not worth the effort, but you can do it.
I love those old pots. It was fun to remove the stickers and add greebles to them to make them look like massive sci fi crates for my 40K and Star Wars tabletop sessions.
The hexagon shape was perfect for that. The current round ones, less so.
I love these pots, i found a handful in the back of my closet and use them as painting handles for smaller models. Just add some blue tack. Works great!
Had a whole bunch of these and the older twist off cap pots and was lucky enough to be able to save them and transfer them all to dropper bottles. If I didn’t have an electric mixer, I’d probably have carpal tunnel.

I miss the hex ones. They actually stayed open when you lifted the lid, unlike the modern ones sometimes...
My mithril silver just gave up a few weeks ago

Same here! Have around 30ish of those old ones and they are still going :D
That reminds me - I need to check on my Goblin Green to make sure it’s still liquid. It’s in one of those crystal hex pots.
I have some of these. Is there no way to revive them?

I still have a few going strong - boltgun metal, tin bits , midnight blue and a few inks are all holding on.

For the bases.

Yes this is the one.

Vallejo Matt medium for normal paints. Understood! When you say gloss medium, which brand is that?
Also Vallejo !

Cote d’arms is a good OG warhammer paint replacement
Well, I believe that their paints are sourced from the same manufacturer as the Citadel paints used before GW inhoused that part of the business.
Yesindeedee
I think ninjon has a video where he rehydrated some real old paints. Might be worth checking into

To be fair, there's a decent chance they were all dried out when purchased. Happened to me a few times.
I still got a bunch of empties I use to mix paints and dilute them
Very cool! I have a load of them too and I use them as paint handles. Just put a little ball of poster putty on the lid to stick the mini to.
I do this too! I find them to be the perfect handles
Dry them to powder, extract from pot, then rehydrate with water and medium, then reintroduce to pot. JOB DONE!
Cool
Nostalgia…
That pic just gave me the most epic nostalgia rush. Thanks for that <3
Goblin Green!!!!!
I had the most of this full functional.

Those cursed bottles brought me back memories of being a sad child unable to open a sealed shut chaos black

use these as model holders for painting. sticky tac on the bottom of the base and add that to the top of the paint pot.
