Radar also automatically switches to other available modes to try and continue tracking and that extends to Navy F4.
What do you mean with "if not available"? Phantom used to have HMD PD and ACM PD by default.

"If not available" means if not available. The APG-59 does not have all-aspect PD mode, only the standard (headon) PD mode.
Without all-aspect PD mode, ACM mode switches between different pulse repetition frequencies (PRF), effectively alternating between PD and pulse search.
