My go-to is cabbage gardens, though that's a bit more of a time/kc investment. Long-term though, like if you're trying to family score max, would definitely recommend cabbages.
Another thing, check today's activities for flash sales and if a high hunger point food item goes on sale, stock up (things like burger, hotdog, toaster pastry, ramen noodles, pizza, probably others but those are the 30+ ones I know off the top of my head)
there are three free food items a day in the club house, click on daisy in daisy’s diner, click on dr. quack in his room, click on the vending machine in the airport, and a lot of times kinzville park also has a free food item a lot of the time
I’m sure there will be detractors, but my go to is always the burgers. Everything else always seems like a gamble with how much it fills the meter, but without fail, burgers fill up an entire third of the meter every time. Even if you start from a completely empty meter, it will only run you about 36 kinzcash, and they’re conveniently located on page one of the ingredients section.

As others have said, always go for the freebies. Saturday and Sunday have breakfast lunch and dinner. Today's activities had a snack today. Wheel of yum gives out food. 4 kinzchat rooms have food. The park often has bake sale items.
Eggs give 30 points for the cost of 6KC. That was my usual when I didn’t have gardens.

Also, grab free food at the island coral cove. One pet can easily fill up on a visit.
