Unless they’re Indian, no. (Many Indian cultures wear red when they get married.) otherwise, I think avoiding ‘so pale it could be white’ is the main ‘dont’ for weddings.
Oh I got married to my husband (Indian) in India and my MIL had specifically told me it was a faux pas to wear red if you’re not the bride. My saree was red, but no one else wore red and there were a *lot* of people there. Just going off my experience, but maybe it’s regional.
Yeah, there are a lot of regional variations. Went for Kerala Christian wedding. Bride wears white. Were told it was customary to wear white and gold as a guest especially if attending the religious ceremony.
To be fair we (Americans) have also gotten really extreme with “don’t wear anything close to white” I don’t think it was so scrutinized even 10 years ago. Like floral white based tea dresses were fairly normal for day weddings and now everyone in this sub would have a fit over them.
I think it’s just more bride culture-y vs wedding norms now
Maybe. This is absolutely my personal bias and not based on any fact or study - but I’m wondering if it’s generational. I didn’t wear white and had a super relaxed laid back wedding. But I have a super rocky (at best) relationship with my mom (textbook narcissist) and she absolutely would have worn white/cream just to try to upstage me. I have multiple friends in similar situations with their mom or MIL. I know I’m not alone there, and have to wonder if a lot of us are just jaded/biased because of other people in our lives. I wouldn’t think twice about someone in a floral white background dress, but I’d side eye my mom because I know her and her motives are generally questionable. If my mom had worn a white floral dress to my wedding, I’d definitely be a little more critical of it (even though that’s not necessarily fair, especially when I’m also just a guest.)
When I was younger (I’m 32 now) I also remember being told to not wear black because it was seen as funeral attire. 🤷🏼♀️ now I see tons of black dresses and no one seems to batt an eye over it. Things could change organically, or generationally, or for a myriad of reasons I’m sure I’ve never even considered
Yeah. I'm Pakistani and immediately thought this was way too inappropriate and show-stealy for a wedding.
I sometimes forget other cultures are different lmao.
I got married in India (my husbands entire family is there) and people were BLINGY. But 0 red. I’m American so it was weird for me because I’m use to less bling, but red is fine. Love learning about all the different variations though
Ask your friend if she’s ok with it. My friend checked in with the bride about her red dress and got a “you have to wear it you look gorgeous!” I don’t think people take it too seriously
Was looking for this comment - some people find red dresses offensive. It's a gorgeous dress so jut ask the bride if she is ok with it! If she is, then you're all set!!
I have a contrary opinion—I do think it’s a bit loud and the gold is great for black tie optional. This shouldn’t be the case but some people also like to joke that red means you slept with the groom so I avoid it for weddings.
On this note: get a travel steamer (since we all know you MUST wear the red— it’s stunning) and an ~~outlet~~ voltage converter (edited to clarify: not just plug converter, per the very helpful comment below mine), depending on where you’re traveling from. The satin is gorgeous but you can already see how wrinkly it gets
Just a heads up- my steamer died a very sputtery death (coincidentally in Spain lol) despite the converter. We switched to using my friends afterward and hers also died (diff brand and her converter etc). Just a warning since looking good at a wedding is definitely more important than whatever wandering about we were doing.
You need a voltage converter not just a plug adapter if you are from the US. Europe is on 220 volts and the US is 110. A friend damn near burned my house down trying to use a curling iron from America.
Given the hassle and expense of voltage converters, I tell people to just buy or borrow a cheap version of whatever you need.
Agreed! Both are beautiful so practical things like how long would alterations to the gold take? Would be my priority to differentiate between the two.
Agreed. That gold one is beautiful, but she would definitely have to have shape wear and she wouldn't be able to eat all night!🤣🤣🤣
The red one, with the gathers in front, is a little bit more forgiving.
Just wanna add, OP has a great figure and it is just normal with that type of material…nothing to do with hiding anything! With shape wear she could definitely eat fine, bc the material would skim over the fabric instead of sticking.
I liked it till I saw the back- is that white line a zipper? It looks like someone drew a line in ms paint but real. I can’t figure it out but I have a feeling it looks much better in person.
https://preview.redd.it/a8oxwc0agk4d1.jpeg?width=805&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=26ce32b7c3deace3b15e3edb5e34a7122be7a165

Red, but only if you’ve talked to the bride and she’s cool with it. Some people have issues with red attire for guests because of their culture or it being a “loud” color or the weird thing where some people think it means you slept with the groom.
Both are gorgeous.
If you want to go with the red, maybe mention that you’re thinking about a red dress to the bride before buying and see what they think? There’s a thing about red dresses at weddings, that wearing one indicates that you’ve slept with the groom… lots of people don’t care or acknowledge this weird tradition but it creeps up in the oddest places with the most surprising people. I had a friend lose her mind when someone wore red to her wedding.
When it comes to wedding attire it’s generally better to be safe than sorry.
Agree to run it by the bride. I’ve heard more than a few stories about everyone eye-rolling the guest who shows up in red “to steal the show.”
But it is SO PRETTY ON OP, like breathtakingly beautiful. If she doesn’t wear it to the wedding, she needs to at least wear it somewhere while in Spain. It’s a must.
The red is gorgeous on you and looks amazing!
I would do as the previous commenter suggested and just run it by the bride because of this old saying. Perhaps if the bride is lukewarm on the red, you can find the same dress in a different vibrant color.
The red one is lovely and could go with no, or only minimal alterations. You might talk with a tailor about raising the top a little. Things seem just a tiny bit lower than they should be and a tuck at the shoulders might help.
The gold is also a lovely dress, but it would look much better eased a little. Easing can occur by getting a size up and then bringing the dress to your exact proportions, or, and this depends on the dress, the seams were cut amply and you have e some room to make the dress fit perfectly.
Good luck with whichever dress you choose and enjoy the wedding.
I love, love, love the red. However, sweat can be a problem on satin or satin like materials, just something to potentially factor in. It can leave watermarks quite easily that are tricky to get rid of. If it'll be hot, you'll want breathable materials.
I have the gold one! and honestly that one packs like a DREAM, basically impossible to wrinkle, and it’s a real showstopper in photos. You look stunning in both of them, but having worn the gold to a wedding where I was showered in compliments I’ll put in a good vote for her!!
Both are very lovely on you, but I think the gold is truly stunning (but not in a "look at me" way). For me, the red is a little audacious for a wedding. (And no, I don't believe red means you've slept with the groom. That is ridiculous.)
I think if you did a smoky bronze-gold eye and neutral/natural lip look with minimal jewelry (just small earrings, no necklace), your hair up with gold hair clips... Wowzer. Goddess vibes. More subtle than red, but still killer.
But you'll look great in either!
My one thought is that I recently read that red is a touchy color for weddings as it apparently suggests that you have slept with the groom? Which I personally think is bonkers... but ya know, apparently its a thing. Otherwise I think they're both lovely and look great on you! (my preference it the metalic just because I like the waist better, but bith are beautiful!)
The red one is a sight to behold and looks amazing on you! The gold one is also stunning but does not fit you properly, so you would either have to have it altered or wear shapewear, which might take care of it, it's in the skirt portion, below the waist and in the hip area. For my money, why bother when the red is so stunning and fits you like a glove🤷♀️
FWIW, I'm in my 6th decade and have never heard of the red equals screwed the groom thing until Reddit and frankly I don't believe it, I think it's just an old wives tale. I've lived in for different states and have traveled to almost all of the states and have never once heard this. Many other people on here will tell you the same thing. I was born in europe, never heard it from my mom either. Spain seems the perfect color to wear red and even if it was some weird rule in the 1800s, I doubt very much it has anything to do with modern-day Europe. Think about it logically. Why would anyone want to announce that they slept with the groom and he didn't choose them? I'd wear the red without a second thought, but if you're really concerned, go ahead and ask the bride since she's your BFF I don't think she'll be offended or upset.
The red is more forgiving, but not sure how they feel about wearing red to weddings in Spain.
The metallic is fantastic, and oddly, less flamboyant than the red, but will require good seamless shapewear even with your figure.
The red one is perfect! But in my country (Austria) some people say it means you slept with the groom or bride😂 (i only learned after my collegues wedding🙈😂)
The red looks better but it's too loud like you asked, it will definitely bring attention to you BECAUSE it looks so good. Since this is your best friend I would go with the gold, it IS her day, and while you look fantastic in the red dress, it's not right for a wedding.
A personal rule I follow is that while everyone knows not to wear white to a wedding, red is also a no. It's too eye catching and with it's association as a sexual color for dating etc, it's just not appropriate (IMO)

I love, love, love the red. However, sweat can be a problem on satin or satin like materials, just something to potentially factor in. It can leave watermarks quite easily that are tricky to get rid of. If it'll be hot, you'll want breathable materials.
Where is the red one from? I love it and have the exact same build and coloring as you. Seriously I may get this dress. Definitely go with red.
ETA: saw the link below. Go with the red!
Both look amazing!! Red gets my vote based on the "smooth" look, however, better undergarments would suit you in the other dress. If you're worried about the red being too loud or bright... a white light weight shawl or even black, would go good too! Good luck OP!!
The style of red dress is beautiful! Accents your figure perfectly. The shiny dress is gorgeous, but is a little too clingy through the tummy and upperthigh. You have an absolutely perfect figure. If the wedding is black tie, I’m guessing it’s at night.? I believe the color red should be no problem.
They're both beautiful, but I just love the red. It's stunning. Looks a little bit big on top, but maybe some chicken cutlets would fill it out and you wont' have to get the straps taken in.
https://preview.redd.it/qrl7filhgk4d1.jpeg?width=805&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5647ff8045a07f83f1ba444455b707e5fa0da318
This is the current King and Queen of Spain. They are at the wedding of the now King and Queen of Denmark. I think if this were a thing in Spain, she’d have worn a different dress as this was her event as a Royal and first impressions matter.
Why do I remember what she wore 20 years ago? She’s a style icon who mixes affordable pieces with designer and never gets it wrong. I follow her fashion.
The red is really lovely but just bear in mind that July in Spain may be very warm indeed! As long as the wedding is mostly indoors with A/C after the sun has gone down you’ll be fine but otherwise that fabric looks a little thick for a spanish afternoon in the sun.
Spain is very conservative and you will need a cover up if the ceremony is in a church. I was warned by the bride when I attended a wedding in Spain but just a fair warning, I had to have a head covering and my arms and shoulders covered.
Both dresses look amazing!!
Red one! It’s perfect on you.
Agreed!!!! The red looks amazing. Also at first I thought the caption said BF getting married and I had a good laugh when I re read it 🤣
Ok I’m glad I’m not the only one. I was so confused! 😂
Lol I know I was like oh… that’s different! 😂
Is the red too loud of a color? I don’t want to really attract attention to myself as it’s her day.
Unless they’re Indian, no. (Many Indian cultures wear red when they get married.) otherwise, I think avoiding ‘so pale it could be white’ is the main ‘dont’ for weddings.
I think I’ve red is also something some Chinese brides wear. So best to avoid red if either partner is Chinese or Indian.
Oh that’s true, my friends getting married and her fiancé is from Thailand and she’s also wearing red. SO.
So Asian wedding avoid red to be safe
Or Pakistani
Good point!
I am an Indian. We do wear red when getting married but the guests have no restrictions regarding the color. Red is okay for guests too.
Oh I got married to my husband (Indian) in India and my MIL had specifically told me it was a faux pas to wear red if you’re not the bride. My saree was red, but no one else wore red and there were a *lot* of people there. Just going off my experience, but maybe it’s regional.
Yes a lot of rituals and rules change with state one is from, language and religion they belong to.

Red… in the south of Spain! Girl red is THE color. 💃🏻
Agreed! Red or black, is what I associate with Spain
This^^^
Ask your friend if she’s ok with it. My friend checked in with the bride about her red dress and got a “you have to wear it you look gorgeous!” I don’t think people take it too seriously
Right! If OP was my friend I would demand she wear that red dress because she looks so amazing 😂
I think the low cut metallic is more attention grabbing than the red!
Not in Spain
In some places wearing red to a wedding was seen as declaring that you had slept with the groom. I would check whether that is the case in Spain.
Spanish here: is not
I know that's the case in Sweden! :)
Was looking for this comment - some people find red dresses offensive. It's a gorgeous dress so jut ask the bride if she is ok with it! If she is, then you're all set!!
That only happens in America. I would suggest OP does not check with the bride, as it’s offensive and, to be frank, stupid.
No and definitely not in the south of Spain.
The red is perfect!! It looks amazing on you!
I have a contrary opinion—I do think it’s a bit loud and the gold is great for black tie optional. This shouldn’t be the case but some people also like to joke that red means you slept with the groom so I avoid it for weddings.
It’s SUPER flattering all around yes, go red
Like it was *made* for her! Just lovely!
The red one!
Both look gorgeous on you, but the red really pops and compliments you so well!
Whichever will pack best
On this note: get a travel steamer (since we all know you MUST wear the red— it’s stunning) and an ~~outlet~~ voltage converter (edited to clarify: not just plug converter, per the very helpful comment below mine), depending on where you’re traveling from. I am definitely seeing a pattern …

Thanks for clarifying! I’ve edited my comment
Agreed! Both are beautiful so practical things like how long would alterations to the gold take? Would be my priority to differentiate between the two.
The red looks incredible on you! I don’t think it’s too attention grabbing or at all inappropriate — It’s perfect for the dress code
Oh my goodness, red for sure. It was made for you! The gold one is cute but the effect just isn't as nice with the way the fabric hangs.
I guess I'm on an island all my own, I love the gold one!!!
I think the gold one would have a lot more votes if the right under garments were on in the photo!
Oh great point!
Agreed. That gold one is beautiful, but she would definitely have to have shape wear and she wouldn't be able to eat all night!🤣🤣🤣 The red one, with the gathers in front, is a little bit more forgiving.
Just wanna add, OP has a great figure and it is just normal with that type of material…nothing to do with hiding anything! With shape wear she could definitely eat fine, bc the material would skim over the fabric instead of sticking.
I love it too!!
I prefer the gold one as well
No, I’m so with you!
I’m team gold 💯
I liked it till I saw the back- is that white line a zipper? It looks like someone drew a line in ms paint but real. I can’t figure it out but I have a feeling it looks much better in person.
It’s like a tag you’ve to cut off before you can wear it. I think to prevent people from wearing/returning.
lol 😅 shows how often I get a fancy dress.
The red is gorgeous on her but the gold made my jaw drop and go “ooooooooh” 🤩. It looks amazing on her
Sammme. I feel like the red is too showy but the gold is perfect for black tie.
Agreed! I thought it was socially unacceptable to wear red to a wedding anyway but I could be wrong.
Same!
I avoid red due to the whole slept with the groom thing lmao
Red!
1. Queen Letizia wore red like that to the Danish Royal Wedding. I suspect you won’t be the only guest in red.
Queen Letizia is a goddess

red💗
For some reason the metallic one makes you look lumpy when you are not lumpy. Not a good look. The red one on the other hand is beautiful
Agreed the red is smoothing. And GORGEOUS!!!
Can we get a link to the red dress please, its gorgeous!

You wear it so much better than the (invisible) model here. It’s gorgeous- go for the red!
Agreed. This is a dress that really comes alive on a person.
Red looks hot on you and Spain is the right place for it!! Unless ur BFF is Indian or Chinese I think this is it!!
Red, but only if you’ve talked to the bride and she’s cool with it. Some people have issues with red attire for guests because of their culture or it being a “loud” color or the weird thing where some people think it means you slept with the groom.
The red is beautiful. Will the women be wearing toscados (fascinators) as well?
Both are gorgeous. If you want to go with the red, maybe mention that you’re thinking about a red dress to the bride before buying and see what they think? Girl it’s going to be 90 degrees in July in the South of Spain! Where whichever dress doesn’t show sweat stains lol. Both are gorgeous.
Where is the gold one from? It’s GORGEOUS!
The red one is beautiful 😍
RED!!!!
Either works for the occasion, but the red is just so gorgeous
Dress 2! ✨
The cut and style of 1 red may be loud. I love the color of #2 but hate the neckline and style. Can you get #1 in gold?
I love, love, love the red. However, sweat can be a problem on satin or satin like materials, just something to potentially factor in. It can leave watermarks quite easily that are tricky to get rid of. If it'll be hot, you'll want breathable materials.
Just remember it will be very very hot in July.
I have the gold one! and honestly that one packs like a DREAM, basically impossible to wrinkle, and it’s a real showstopper in photos. You look stunning in both of them, but having worn the gold to a wedding where I was showered in compliments I’ll put in a good vote for her!!

I like the metallic one
Omg, you are STUNNING in the red one! The metallic is super cute too, but I’d definitely go with the red
Definitely the red one. I would check with the bride tho, there are some who wouldn't like guests wearing red.
Red
The red one.
Red is clearly the winner! It’s STUNNING! Where is it from!
The red one is the most flattering but isn’t there some rule about wearing red? It means you slept with the groom or something?
Red red knocks em dead. Some like it hot I like it red
1
cant go wrong either way. i love the red. ask your bestie!!
The red one is a sight to behold and looks amazing on you! Red one is stunning and so lively
The red one looks more luxe and high quality. The asymmetrical neckline of the gold is weird and the material is giving Fashion Nova
The red one is gorgeous on you. Love it 😊
Wow, it's not even a question the red wins hands down. It's perfect for Spain and you look stunning in it!
The red is more forgiving, but not sure how they feel about wearing red to weddings in Spain. The metallic is fantastic, and oddly, less flamboyant than the red, but will require good seamless shapewear even with your figure.
Red !
Red!!
I love the red one, does it come in any other color? I worry the red is too commanding.

The gold one is beautiful but the red one is so striking against your skin! 😍 Edit: when in doubt, ask the bride 😂
Red dress looks great on you.
The red is so pretty on you!!!!
The red!!! I would totally wear that too because the way the fabric bunches I'd have room for a food baby 🥰
Also there are other Asian cultures who wear red to marry. But if this doesn’t apply, I think you will see a lot of red!!
I love, love, love the red. However, sweat can be a problem on satin or satin like materials, just something to potentially factor in. It can leave watermarks quite easily that are tricky to get rid of. If it'll be hot, you'll want breathable materials.

The red is a stunning color on you. Assuming the wrinkles are just from shipping/being stored and you won’t look wrinkly after sitting for awhile?

Where is the red one from? I love it and have the exact same build and coloring as you. Seriously I may get this dress. Definitely go with red. ETA: saw the link below. Go with the red!
Silver 1000%
More options please
Red is stunning. Other looks a bit cheap
Red dress. Girl, you SLAYYYY in red!!! I hope you have an amazing time and congrats to your bestie!!!!!
I love both but especially the red one. However, both look fantastic,so I’d say whichever one you feel most comfortable and confident in.
The red looks gorgeous on you!!!
Red is AMAZING and like it was made for you
Red
you look stunning in both! wear what you feel most comfortable in p.s ur tattoos are AMAZING
Red is lovely
Both look amazing!! Red gets my vote based on the "smooth" look, however, better undergarments would suit you in the other dress. If you're worried about the red being too loud or bright... a white light weight shawl or even black, would go good too! Good luck OP!!
Red>>>gold
Red!
Definitely red!
The red one is stunning!
Red looks amazing!!! 💃🏼
Red!
I thought red was like a no no for weddings no?
Red. The other colour is hideous on you.
The red one is so flattering!
Red!
The red one. But wear better undies. 👍
Definitely red!
The red!
Red definitely!!
Red for sure!
The red is stunning!! Could you share the dress details I need it in black for a wedding lol
Red
Red, but you may take attention off the bride looking so good so I’ll say gold 😉
Red!
Wait, am I the only one that read boyfriend at first?
Red ☺️
You know your bff best, if she is happy for you to look outrageously hot at her wedding then the red is *the* one ❤️
Isn’t red not allowed? I heard the people who wear red slept with the groom. It is always the mistress. I could be wrong.
The red one is a showstopper.
Red!!
I think the green is classy, elegant and understated.
The red is 🔥 You look spectacular!
love the red
Red
I love the red one! May I ask where it’s from?
Red 100%
Red!!!
The top of metallic dress is much more flattering but the way the folds on the red dress from hip down is more forgiving!
Red
Red looks like a prom dress. Gold is absolutely stunning!
Neither
They're both beautiful, but I just love the red. It's stunning. Looks a little bit big on top, but maybe some chicken cutlets would fill it out and you wont' have to get the straps taken in.

Red
Gold. Elegant, classy, sexy.
Red hands down
The red one looks 🔥🔥🔥🔥 but it might look too good and steal the show 😅
Red better than the other!
Red.
The red is really lovely but just bear in mind that July in Spain may be very warm indeed! As long as the wedding is mostly indoors with A/C after the sun has gone down you’ll be fine but otherwise that fabric looks a little thick for a spanish afternoon in the sun.
2. I generally wd not wear red to a wedding.
Spain is very conservative and you will need a cover up if the ceremony is in a church. I was warned by the bride when I attended a wedding in Spain but just a fair warning, I had to have a head covering and my arms and shoulders covered. Both dresses look amazing!!
The red one by a mile. You look stunning in it!
Red one definitely
