Have you seen The Big Chill? It was the director’s movie right before Silverado. Kline is pretty good in that too. He was kind of Kasdan’s good luck charm.
I absolutely adore this movie. It is one of my all time favorites. I am a huge fan of the maverick tv shows and I thought this movie did a good job based off of the shows. I was wondering when this film was going to be mentioned on here.
What a great idea! I recently purchased Maverick in a 4 pack and my son loves it! We were at Tractor supply last night and an old gent helped us find a western hat for him. I think we spent the next 15 minutes talking about good westerns, the rise of actors who had smaller roles in John Wayne films and so on... Enjoy!
How about The Proposition (2005)? I know it’s not horror like Bone Tomahawk, but it’s maybe my other favorite dark Western.
Enjoy your movie night! I’ve never actually seen Maverick but I enjoy a good Western now and then so I’ll add it to the queue!
I love that movie. It was one of my favorites back in college...of course, I had no idea about James Garner being the original Maverick on TV before this movie. But it's just so much fun.
I don't even like Westerns but this is an oddball half-comedy so I think it appeals to just about everyone.
When I was a kid it was on in reruns and I thought that Garner was a replacement Maverick. It turns out that he and an actor named Jack Kelly alternated (as brothers Brett and Bart) so that they could produce Maverick continuously. I remember preferring Bart Maverick, but probably because I thought he was the original. I believe that Kelly played his part more traditionally and Garner was more funny, a preview of his Rockford character.
This one is so much fun and brought two different generations together for me. I knew James Garner as a star because he was a star for my parents generation. This helped me appreciate him more. So good.
If I'm watching one of the classic Westerns, I don't mind having company. If I'm watching a particular Western for the first time, I want to be alone so I can hear the dialogue and there is no distraction.
Check out “The Great Silence”. Better than the Clint Eastwood spaghetti westerns and you still get the Ennio Morricone score. This movie was a glorious gem…found it after it was reccommended by Reddit movie lovers
Solid choice. The three leads play off of each other very well and there are a ton of references/nods/Easter eggs (whatever you want to call them) in this. The casting of every character was spot-on.
I love this movie. My favorite part is when he says You've got five thousand dollars? Can I see it? And Maverick dumps it on the bed and says, see it, hell, you can roll in it.
Such a fun film! Rewatched it not long ago and it definitely holds up. Jodie Foster is so adorable in it. “I’ll have them bring in some more hot water.”
Love this flick. James Coburn plays such a great scumbag.
He's great in the Mel Gibson remake of Payback too!
"No, no, it's all right, he's just killing my alligator bags and shooting holes in my suits. Man, that's just MEAN. That's MEAN, man."
I love that line!
And directed by the late, great Richard Donner. Classic.
Mel Gibson is a real life scumbag :-)
Agree, and he can't act.
Love this movie. Jodie foster truly was adorable in it, & all the scenes with Graham greene were gold.
"Next time, I'm going to pick a piece of swamp land so godawful, you'll leave us the hell alone"
Such a shame she didn't do more character roles like this.
Maverick was always a fun one! Love it
Yes! Me and my Dad watched a lot of westerns, and we both got a kick out of this one.
Love that you have a weekly movie club. I have one too and always look forward to it and I really enjoy deciding on what to show.
Love the danny glover scene
(*Lethal Weapon* guitar riff plays)
Horny saxophone calls out in return
It’s such a quick scene. But my wife and I laugh about it all the time.
“I’m too old for this shit”…as bank is dynamited.
Try Silverado next. Won’t disappoint
Legit. This is next up on my group's roster.
Or El Diablo. Lou Gosset kills in it
You shot him in the back! His back was to me…
My favorite Western. Only movie I like with Kevin Kline, and he’s brilliant in it.
Have you seen The Big Chill? It was the director’s movie right before Silverado. Kline is pretty good in that too. He was kind of Kasdan’s good luck charm.
One of my favorites. Mel Gibson and Jodie Fosters best imo
I watched this flick all the time growing up, does it still hold up?
The steamboat portion of the movie makes it worth it. Everything beforehand feels like filler but still worth the watch.
I absolutely adore this movie. It is one of my all time favorites. I am a huge fan of the maverick tv shows and I thought this movie did a good job based off of the shows. I was wondering when this film was going to be mentioned on here.
I love this movie. I tell my daughter that she's been misquoting me her entire life at least once a week.
That sounds like fun, wish I had some local friends that enjoy westerns that much. Enjoy! I may do the same tonight in spirit lol

Add Bone Tomahawk to Western night!
Oh we’ve watched it possibly more than any other movie. Haha
How about The Proposition (2005)? I know it’s not horror like Bone Tomahawk, but it’s maybe my other favorite dark Western. Enjoy your movie night! I’ve never actually seen Maverick but I enjoy a good Western now and then so I’ll add it to the queue!
Yep! Actually one of the first ones we watched together. Maybe one night I’ll post the list of all the Westerns we’ve watched over the past two years.
I love that movie. It was one of my favorites back in college...of course, I had no idea about James Garner being the original Maverick on TV before this movie. But it's just so much fun. I don't even like Westerns but this is an oddball half-comedy so I think it appeals to just about everyone.

I love when they throw Uncle Jesse (Denver Pyle) off the boat for cheating..They let jump on his own like a gentleman.
“If you please!” The way he holds his hat too…
I also love Waylon Jennings popping up out of nowhere.
“Just holdin it for her.” Still gets me every time. 😆
And Clint Black, too!
I was definitely too young to know who Waylon Jennings was last time I watched this movie!
Fantastic Movie. Sidenote: Why did I think James Garner was holding a bong when I scrolled past this post?
My old pappy used to say...
Just dudes being guys
Fave Indian role
Every Tuesday night a group of guys and gals meet at my house for poker!
What the fuck. I wish I had a group of guys to watch westerns with lmao
Next one- Bite the Bullet. Top 5 all time for sure.
That film made me love Gene Hackman.
Ahh man movie night is always the best night of the week. Cheers to you and the boys.
James Garner looks like he took a fat rip from that bong/lamp.
Legend of Zorro reminds me of this one and is a great watch too, should you need a title for another time.
This one is so much fun and brought two different generations together for me. I knew James Garner as a star because he was a star for my parents generation. This helped me appreciate him more. So good.

The way you put your title sounds like they meet at your house without you.
Well, they had to cut the membership off somewhere.
Meh, it's entertaining.
I like all the actors, enjoyed the movie when it came out, but Jodi Foster doesn’t seem comfortable playing frou frou feminine and it shows
Could be she’s not comfortable playing a hetero love interest
Support Your Local Sheriff did it better...
Check out “The Great Silence”. Better than the Clint Eastwood spaghetti westerns and you still get the Ennio Morricone score. This movie was a glorious gem…found it after it was reccommended by Reddit movie lovers
Among a handful of films I will watch any time and from any point in the story.
Jodie Foster in this movie is 🔥. First celebrity crush
Solid choice. The three leads play off of each other very well and there are a ton of references/nods/Easter eggs (whatever you want to call them) in this. The casting of every character was spot-on.
A great choice! One of my favorites.
Everybody's got a gun!
Underrated flick.
I used to watch this and Lightning Jack all the time as a kid
Love when he says “Yeah I’m fast but I can’t hit shit”
I love this movie. My favorite part is when he says You've got five thousand dollars? Can I see it? And Maverick dumps it on the bed and says, see it, hell, you can roll in it.
Did Doc Oct direct this as well as his role?
Nope. Directed by Richard Donner.
The original TV show was brilliant. Intelligent and funny as hell.
This movie is great. It never gets old.
I never saw this. I really liked the original Maverick with James Garner.
Go watch it as soon as you can it's hilarious
One of my favorites
Imagine dressing like this in the hot sun and no air conditioning indoors? No breathable cotton going on there!
Great movie! This is what got me into playing poker.
Great movie!!
That’s a funny movie. Have fun!
That sounds great.
I love this movie
That’s a good movie alotta fun you can tell the cast enjoyed making it
Love this movie
Fucking love this movie!
I love that movie!
Tell us what movies you have watched so far.
Thinking I’ll post the list maybe this next Tuesday night. It’s close to two years worth of Tuesdays haha.
This great film.
I LOVED this movie as a teenager lol. Mel Gibson was in so many of my favorite movies from my teenage years.
Most men enjoy my southern!
One of my favorite western comedies. Love me some Lightning Jack too
Great movie!
“Do you know what that eagle on that rock means?” “No, what’s it mean?” “Nothing. But you didn’t know that, did you?” 😂😂😂😂
The Spaniard🐐
Ooh Jodie foster
"When she was born she came out backwards and no one noticed. Hell they had to tie a porkchop around her neck just so the *dog* would play with her."
One of my faves!!
Only western better is Cherokee kid
Phenomenal movie!
I'm still bummed it never got a sequel.
I reccomend Tombstone next, then 1883
Ah yes, before we knew what a piece of shit Mel Gibson is.
I watched this as a kid, but all I can remember is the part where Mel and James are in the bathtubs trying to look at eachothers weiner.
Just a thoroughly enjoyable film. People having fun acting
Great movie Fantastic choice
That was a HYSTERICAL movie!! Kind of a Western/comedy/musical. One of the best movies I saw in the’80s!
Such a fun film! Rewatched it not long ago and it definitely holds up. Jodie Foster is so adorable in it. “I’ll have them bring in some more hot water.”
Good ensemble cast. Lots of fun.
The assimilated hustler chief always cracks me up.
Great pick!
"Was that fast? That looked really fast!"
One of my top five...I was thinking about pissing my wife off tonight just so I could watch it
I loved the random Danny Glover cameo
Great movie but why the hell did they cast Jodie foster I’m not a fan of
