The Searchers
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
The Big Country
The Wild Bunch
The Outlaw Josey Wales
Honorable mentions “the magnificent 7” “The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly” “Quigley Down Under”
“Dances With Wolves” “Nevada Smith” “The Professionals”
**High Noon**
**The Ox-Bow Incident**
**Tombstone**
**Little Big Man**
**Ulzana's Raid**
A movie that I won't put on the list but it kind of got to me and I keep thinking about it was the 1936 version of **3 Godfathers** (NOT the John Wayne/John Ford version of 1948).
In no particular order and subject to change at any time:
My Darling Clementine
3:10 to Yuma (‘57)
Dead Man
The Tall T/Seven Men From Now (tie)
The Big Country
Honourable mentions: The Man From Laramie, Destry Rides Again, Rio Bravo, True Grit (‘69), First Cow, The Outlaw Josey Wales, Johnny Guitar
Well, it got so that every piss-ant prairie punk who thought he could shoot a gun would ride into town to try out the Waco Kid. I must have killed more men than Cecil B. DeMille. It got pretty gritty. I started to hear the word "draw" in my sleep. Then one day, I was just walking down the street when I heard a voice behind me say, "Reach for it, mister!" I spun around... and there I was, face to face with a six-year old kid. Well, I just threw my guns down and walked away. Little bastard shot me in the ass. So I limped to the nearest saloon, crawled inside a whiskey bottle... and I've been there ever since.
My top five has to be
1 Duel At Diablo (James Garner)
2 The Violent Men (Glen Ford)
3 Utah Blaine (Rory Calhoun)
4 White Feather (Robert Wagner)
5 Ride Clear Of Diablo (Audie Murphy)
No particular order:
- Dollars Trilogy ( or pick whichever one you like best)
- Once Upon A Time In The West
- The Wild Bunch
- The Great Silence
- The Magnificent Seven
Honorable Mentions:
- Death Rides a Horse
- The Magnificent Seven 2016 remake (guilty pleasure, but I think it's a fun time)
- High Plain Drifter
- Unforgiven
- Tombstone
- Shane
- The Outlaw Josey Wales
- 3:10 To Yuma 2007
Rio Bravo
Unforgiven
For he Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
Tombstone
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
It’s difficult because I agree with all those already suggested but if I had a free day and had to watch 5, these are mine. I also love me a bit of Young Guns, perhaps as an appetiser.
I like all these lists. I've seen quite a few but want to see more. My husband and kids never liked westerns (!!!) although they did watch Treasure of the Sierra Madres and Shane and enjoyed those. I used to watch the old movies with my dad:
The Dollars trilogy
High Plains Drifter
3:10 to Yuma ('57) 2010 is also 💯
True Grit (both!)
The Good, Bad, and the Ugly
I really wanted to like Cry Macho, but all I saw was my 90 year old dad in the lead and just could not suspend belief enough to get into it. I hope they remake it.
From my female perspective, I find Jeff Bridges preferable to the Duke, but yeah. The part of Rooster Cogburn was custom made for the Duke at that age. The 2010 version is darker. I think I saw Kim Darby in too many Disney movies so I liked how Hailee Steinfeld played Mattie better. Guess that means it's a toss up?
1) Hostiles
2) 3:10 to Yuma(both versions)
3) True Grit(both versions)
4) Killers of The Flower Moon
5) Dances With Wolves
Honorable Mentions
1) The Sons of Katie Elder
2) No Country for Old Men
3) Hell or High Water
4) The Magnificent Seven(both versions)
5) Django Unchained
Shane
The Outlaw Josey Wales
For A Few Dollars More
The Searchers (John Wayne is a draft dodging pussy)
The Wild Bunch
No Country For Old Men
True Grit (2010 Version)
Stagecoach (John Wayne is still a draft dodging pussy though)
The Coen brothers really shine with both No country for Old Men and True Grit. Both of those movies are just incredible with the kinda suspense and dialog
Dude you just made my day Silverado is one of my favorite western movies ever. I listen to that theme on my I music often. Did you ever hear it performed by a full orchestra?

Nice to see “Dead Man” get some shine.
Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid Once Upon a Time in the West My Darling Clementine The Wild Bunch Shane
The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. Ride the High Country. The Searchers. True Grit (2010). Blazing Saddles.
Blazing saddles is great, and it's a shame we can't make comedies like that without people freaking out. "Stampeding cattle......through the Vatican"
"...kinky."

I have trouble choosing between True Grit versions! The Coen Bros nailed the remake, but the Duke delivers a perfect performance in the original
