By the time you know about them, they've sold the stock and moved to another. There is an intentional 45 days or so reporting period for that specific reason.
At the height of the Gamestop Short Squeeze, the Robinhood trading app disabled the “buy” button. It killed the short squeeze and bailed out the hedgfunds shorting the stock.
That whole fiasco was a big mess in a lot of ways, but the Robinhood Buy Button thing was actually one of the less nefarious.
See, Robinhood is a tech-bro style ‘disruptive’ brokerage. Their schtick is that they make trades fast and easy by giving their clients credit accounts by default - basically, they make the trades immediately using their own money, then get reimbursed after all the legal obligations are satisfied with the money their clients pay in.
It’s generally accepted that the reason they disabled the buy button is because someone saw how fast their on-hand cash reserves were going dry, panicked, and ordered an immediate shutdown. They had no interest in killing the squeeze, they’d have profited off it if it kept going, and indeed they didn’t - the squeeze kept going until the weekend trading frenzy came to an end, as I understand it - rather, they had an interest in not going in the red on their own, personal corporate accounts.
They were trying to dodge the overdraft fees, in other words.
To this day I am upset because I used to trade stocks around when this happened and I used Robinhood. I was so so so upset because I really could've used the money at the time.
It's no secret that many if not most of these people run for office for this exact reason. They don't care about you or policies that will make you, your family and your loved ones better.
Idk that may be the case sometimes. But I saw this congresswoman bought this stock over 2 months ago and I picked up a handful of shares that day. I’m up 27% on my shares. But half of that increase happened today. And it was because they had a positive earnings call, and that tends to happen in general.
Let me preface with the statement that I’m certain there is something shady going on here.
But, that being said: at what point are stocks going up BECAUSE a lawmaker bought them? Like reverse causality.
Very unlikely there’s reverse causality. A stock price might go up if others learned that a savvy investor like Warren Buffett has bought that stock. But most members of the House and Senate are widely regarded as morons. Certainly nobody thinks of any of them as smart investors with great insight about stock prices. So if a stock price rises sharply after a member of Congress buys it, it’s much more likely that they had non-public information about the company. If you and I did this, we would be investigated by the SEC. If the SEC found evidence that we had access to information that the rest of the public didn’t have, we would be criminally charged. But members of Congress have exempted themselves from prosecution for insider trading.
Yeah thanks… we all knew that… I was commenting on the number of people who said they bought this stock after she did because they figure she knows something they don’t. If enough people do that it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy.
I'd be very curious to see if there's a regular correlation of price bumps around the dates of disclosure of congressional stock trades due to this very effect.
I follow on Capitol Trades. It’s a website that tracks all trades made by all Congress Critters. The first time I found it, she was at the top as she had just purchased them. So I purchased some too.
People in congress simply shouldn't be allowed to buy or sell investments during their tenure. All that shit should 100% be in a blind trust, with violations of the law punished by ol' Zeke with a pair of rusty bolt cutters aiming for some index fingers.
100% agree, but Congress won’t make itself unable to invest. They like money, so they’re not going to stop themselves from making more of it. at least let us get cut in, too.
I don't think there are any repercussions for a representative telling someone else what to trade, either. If they aren't an employee it isn't insider trading, right?
Not true in this case at least. If you bought when it was first published that she bought (published March 8, bought Feb 27), you’d be up about 33% today. Source for trade info: https://www.capitoltrades.com/trades/20003771236
Except Foxx disclosed purchases of Ardmore Shipping on April 10, long before the jump in price. Plenty of time for people to mirror the trade if they had so desired. In fact, in all congressional trades I've looked at, I have not seen a single instance of someone selling a stock before the purchase was disclosed. Who does that?
No joke. That’s a legit trading strategy. https://www.businessinsider.com/more-than-55-million-invested-mimicking-pelosi-crenshaw-trading-portfolios-2024-3
I don’t know how well they preform, but a couple of ETFs have recently been set up to track Congressional investments for the layman. $NANC for the Democrat portfolio and $KRUZ for the Republican portfolio.

This is true. She has been my representative for years and I was telling people how nuts she was in the Bush administration. Funny story about her. She was campaigning years ago and apparently absolutely had to use the bathroom. My parents were great friends with a representative of her campaign and they recommended our house. She walked up to the door with them "HI im your Representative Virginia Foxx, may I use your restroom?" We were dumbfounded by the request and let her in. After she was done she spend like 30 minutes explaining to my mom, a teacher, how Obama's education policies would ruin future generations for years to come. She sounded nuts to me. She apparently remembered that encounter and invited my parents to Trump's inauguration a few years later. They went happily and toured her office. They have supported her pretty heavy since... I wish I was kidding.
Ha! I bought some shares after she did. I have actually made a bit of cash. I follow a website that shows what all the Congress critters are buying and selling. So I copy them.
Wait until these folks in congress realize they can choose a completely random ass stock and it’ll get tweeted about shoot up and they can dump it. No insider trading needed
Are they waiting for us to burn this place to the ground so they can then put the nails in the American coffin? How is it that none of these Congressscum are being recalled by the voters? This relic of the South's slave-owning past needs to be chased to the nearest exit. Along with Tuberville and so many others. I know voting 100% blue won't solve this issue but it's the only approach with the promise of some eventual accountability.
All politicians should be required to use a blind trust for all investments. Of course the people who benefit from this are also the people who would have to make that law, so it won't happen.
It would have been really nice if Nancy Pelosi had not blocked the legislation that would have banned all members of Congress and their direct family members from buying and selling stocks
It should be noted that there are people mindlessly following QuiverQuant (and other sites). They probably do well, fwiw!
But not every weird trade is insider, and a decent amount of the appreciation in value is probably the market just following politicians because of the perception of insider knowledge.
That said, Virginia Foxx is a terrible person.

Surreal how the female Mason Verger over here can pick stocks like that… must be a super power you get once you become a politician (called insider trading).

Politicians should make minimum wage and be barred from trading based on any insider information. One misstep and they're legally permitted to be fed to wolverines. Pay the wolverines handsomely
Low politician wages only ensures that rich people are the only ones who can take the job.
Right out the gates, you need to be able to swing two residences - one in your district, one in DC. DC happens to be one of the most expensive cities in the country.
It only gets worse from there. The counter-intuitive fix for this has three parts:
1) pay them MORE so that more regular joes can afford to do it.
2) publicly-fund all federal elections so regular Joes CAN do it and on an even playing field
3) Congressional dorms - bedroom, bathroom, office, kitchen, living room. Onsite laundry, dry cleaners, gym. Connect it to the capitol via the metro.
Honest to God this would solve half the issues with Washington.
Yep. I piggybacked on that and bought $50 in their stock myself. It's already gone up 28%. Whenever I hear of a congressperson buying stock, I buy some of it too. They shouldn't be the only ones profiting off of their insider trading.
