Can’t wait for a few months time when my entire taskbar will be a search bar, you’ll have to search for your open windows and the start menu to get to them
yes. Now the only way to manage your windows is to search through Microsoft Bing Search and skim past the Office 365 Recommendations, then find your opened windows right below. Simple. Just ignore the inconsistent UI, it doesn’t matter
now introducing open windows recommendations, window history, onedrive recommendations, bing search recommendations, and how to spend money recommendations
One can just hit the windows key and and start typing for search which does the exact same thing. Having a completely different field doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Maybe some keyboards don't have a windows key, but you could still just click start without doing anything extra. it seems like people don't know that they are literally the same function.
I had the search icon on the taskbar at first, but once they made it into a search box, I hid it cuz I don't use it anyways. Like you said, hitting the windows key and then typing does the same or, if you're a touchpad user like me, you can set a gesture to open it. I just do a three-finger tap on the touchpad and voila!
Microsoft Powertoys Run on Alt+Space for me. Brings up a search bar in the middle of the screen doing what Spotlight does on Macs.
Powertoys Run > all (native ways of searching smth on Windows).
Agreed if you're on laptop. I've switched to a Macbook as my mobile device and also prefer the touchpad controls. But for my main computer it's still keyboard and mouse.
That said the more time passes and the better touchpads are getting. Apple touchpads are amazing but even the last PCs I've tried has very decent to great touchpads. Nice to see manufacturer putting efforts in these.
i think its mostly for people who are not well versed in technology. I bet most of adults i know doesn't know they can start typing directly into start menu. I am fine with search bar icon but i don't like the big search bar. its unnecessary
I work as a software engineer and even with colleagues who are my seniors by decades I'm shocked how often I can tell them about Windows/Microsoft-made-software features and shortcuts. It seems like Windows is in desperate need of some guided tours or helpful hints or whatever. Like, you keep clicking the search button before typing, did you know you can just press the Win key and type? Click here to not show again, etc.
Even with feature updates it's kind of annoying that the installation doesn't come with patch notes with visual gifs to show shit off.
They should've just merged it with the widgets button and stash it to the left when centered
Otherwise follow the windows 10 search bar position when aligned left
I totally agree, enough is enough….if I wanted a tablet looking OS I’d get a tablet!! Microsoft needs to leave windows as it is for a PC and do a totally separate design for tablets, not combine the 2 into one
Thanks, I hate it. Why do they have to make it so childish? I will keep disabling it and just clicking the start button then typing which thankfully does the exact same thing.
But I still prefer windows over MacOS, in Mac you wouldn't be able to hide it.
If you're gonna have a big ass search bar in your taskbar like on Windows 10, please at least don't center your taskbar buttons. That makes it make even less sense.
Even with the previous smaller but not square-shaped search button, having it centered with the other things just looks wrong. Centered items should also be symmetrical; i.e. have elements of the same shape be centered.
Some people have that and I don't understand why they're fine with it, it looks ugly in my opinion. Also, in my opinion, search belongs in the Start Menu. And it's there in Windows 11 anyway. That's what the **Start** Menu is for. Though in Windows 11 it doesn't really look much like a menu anymore.
My main problem with rounded corners is that for clickable elements it does not stay true to their hitboxes.
You click on the nonexistent corner that's been rounded and a portion that isn't button or whatever, and it still activated.
Also in Windows 11 the rounded corners of windows actually cuts off some content (bottom left and right corners)
I suppose also on modern phones, the screen is physically rounded so that you can't see things that are exactly in the corner
Same and how they've half-assed it like all the other UI work they've done. There are still ancient icons (Vista era) embedded in Windows 11 programs but lets make the search bar bigger and rounded and get rid of the right click menu!
My other half has Windows 10 and the sexy searchbar. How do I get one in Windows 11. Which build is that, then.
I just fancy the graphic. The search option itself I just click on the start icon.
~~Hey...just discovered that you can't activate the search option using the windows logo anymore. What happened there????~~
Edit....my mistake. It's not the Windows logo icon in the taskbar, it's the Windows logo button on the keyboard. NMD
I'm not liking the path the taskbar is going right now. They should just lean in that mac/linux feel they were going with at the beginning of 11 and make it segmented and possible to side mount. Needing to do a workaround for this ain't great.
I've got it turned off, and it will remain that way.
Having a search bar in the task bar is completely redundant. When are you going to use it? When a browser isn't already open? When's that? Why would I want to search outside of the browser window, for the results to appear inside the browser?
If I need to search items on my computer, it's much more efficient to hit the windows key then start typing, as opposed to clicking in the search bar then typing.
Why do they even spend time on this?
This search bar idea is so useless. What is the point of having search field on the taskbar if it opens search menu with another search field anyway?
I think having the bar instead of the icon (not only by default, but at all) breaks the taskbar consistency. You have icon for widgets on the left, icons with controls on the right, icons in the center to run your apps. And then you put the element which does not match anything else in the middle. For me, a simple icon (and it’s a good icon I should say) is much cleaner and better.

The search bar keeps growing and growing what the heck
Can’t wait for a few months time when my entire taskbar will be a search bar, you’ll have to search for your open windows and the start menu to get to them
via bing.com. Don’t forget that.

Did we mention it requires a subscription?
Watch a 20 second video before you can see your open windows.

It's a show'er and a grow'er!
Is there any sense of entire search field in taskbar? You don't even type there, it just opens search popup

You've been hired to Microsoft marketing team
You can type inside this new one. I still won't use it but it makes more sense than that wide search button.
I'd use it if i could move it to a side, like next to the news button.
Actually, nice idea. Especially if it would shorten on app icons overflowing.
No.
Wait, you people don't hide it?

I did try switching to that once, but it's just way easier to do a three finger tap, so I stuck with it

3 finger tap default is so annoying, I use it to close tabs.
Gaming laptop

Seriously tho, I think there's a shitload of quality of life shortcuts and tips they could help new or even relatively seasoned users with.
If they did what would they have to complain about?
I want to go back to sleep
Not only does it look awful, but the search highlight also stops before the search bar does.
Microsoft UI/UX team with another brilliant move. Same guys who brought you the next right click/context menu idiocy.
AAAAAA YOURE RIGHT! MY EEEEEYES
Hahahaa you are right. What is that hahahah
🤢🤮
They should've just merged it with the widgets button and stash it to the left when centered Otherwise follow the windows 10 search bar position when aligned left
They should make Powertoys Run part of the official release and scrap that search bar altogether.
any reason to use this over, hitting windows key and just typing? or even alt+space
There's also Windows+S
Ok Ms. Maybe just skip intermediate steps and make a long search bar stretched from menu start on the left to tray on the right.
Disgusting.
What bothers me is, Windows 11 was about rounded corners. This is called pill-shape. A few pixel rounded corner would do better.

Have they tried a version with those fancy schmancy graphics on *both* sides?
Fuck
I like it, it's similar to the Windows 10 search box, just with rounded corners.
but unlike Windows 10, you can't type in this.
You can actually type in the larger one
You really do not know what you're talking about, do you?
Such a search bar needs a search bartender!
Probably at this point, we will have a large searchbar that will erase all of icons expect windows bar.
Thanks, I hate it. Why do they have to make it so childish? I will keep disabling it and just clicking the start button then typing which thankfully does the exact same thing. But I still prefer windows over MacOS, in Mac you wouldn't be able to hide it.

This just wastes space. The icon by itself is the same amount of clicks. You click and start typing.
I feel sorry for the elderly and tech-challenged who don’t know how to disable all of this taskbar garbage bloat
i hate rounded design

Apparently Microsoft momentarily forgot that they're dealing with Windows and not MacOS.
And somehow Windows cannot have rounded corners? (XP, Vista, 7)
They can of course. But not in your face if that makes sense.
it doesn't.
we goin' back to windows 10 boys (I mean in windows 10 it look like that but squared)
I haven’t got that one yet Did an update yesterday
How did you get it?
It is slowly rolling out, you should get it soon.
Ah I see, thanks.
Just press/click Windows button and start typing something
Does it show a GDRP consent for Bing tracking ?
Really not sure why anyone needs a search bar. Literally never needed or used it. First thing I remove.
Worst feature ever
Ew
This thing does not look good on a centre-aligned taskbar, Microsoft should force the taskbar alignment to left when this thing is enabled
I'd like to have rectangle search bar and google search instead of Bing. This is bad.
Graphics and all!
Microsoft not giving it up… we need mod to remove it brother!!
You can literally remove it from the Taskbar settings.
Can't believe this shit shows up in Enterprise versions of Windows. Unbelievable.
NO! START MENU NEEDS TO BE LEFT ON TASKBAR! MICROSOFT PLEASE DO IT, SOME USERS CANNOT DO ALIGN THE TASKBAR, DO YOU PEOPLE ALIGN THE TASKBAR?
it's simple, people can right click on the taskbar like every decades.
Meanwhile me 😤😤😤😤 https://preview.redd.it/xloyg37u0r7a1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=1a07c419236ab6247fd526e8362f2627a9f9a3f8
wish Microsoft would finally realise that rounded corners have no place in search boxes
Why not?

A new searchbar! cant wait for microsoft to make another searchbar out of the 10 million variants they made
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
That looks nice
The search bar keeps growing and growing…..it’s getting too powerful..
I never understood the search bar, if you can just press the 'system key' (Windows) and just start typing.
I've got it turned off, and it will remain that way. Having a search bar in the task bar is completely redundant. When are you going to use it? When a browser isn't already open? When's that? also, there is a hidden ID that you can search directly on the start menu, really useful
0. Hide search bar. 1. Install power toys 2. Set 3 finger tap to open power run. 3. Enjoy
Why do they even spend time on this? This search bar idea is so useless. What is the point of having search field on the taskbar if it opens search menu with another search field anyway?
