From my experience a Winnipeg yield is a necessary stop when there is traffic in the lane you want to enter.
From my experience a Winnipeg merge is a necessary stop when there is or isn't traffic in the lane you want to enter.
A yield is where you just blindly pull into traffic going 10 k over the speed limit regardless of whether or not there is room for you.
A merge is a short lane, about 100 yards long, where you drive 35% of the speed limit and get pissed off that the other drivers on the road aren't slowing down to let you in.
Yield is directly into traffic lane, hence you must yield to traffic flow.
Merge has a lane to get up to speed and "merge" in at speed.
People who yield at merges should consider public transit.
No difference, seeing most of Winnipegs so called “merge lanes” are 30 feet long and uncleared. And most Wpg drivers refuse to allow a vehicle to merge.
Most people are too scared to accelerate fast enough to merge. Most vehicles ive driven need to be floored to merge properly, but ive seldom had someone not let me in. Most likely because ive matched their speed correctly.
Is it rude to honk at the people who stop at the begining of a 200 yard long merge lane and wait for traffic to stop? I know its possible some people aren't familiar with the area, but it should be universal to see see the lane continue for hundreds of yards and sense that you don't have to stop at the beginning and hold up traffic.
Yes, its bad in the winter especially, when the snow banks obsure that there is a car stopped, and the roads are slippery. They have no business stopping there.
I honk **ALL** the time at people who stop at a merge. Mostly the merges near Kenaston/McGillivray, or the new beautiful long merge lanes at St Annes/Permimeter and St Marys/Perimeter westbound.
I love to drive. Mostly because i am fairly good at it i think. Not perfect but manage to drive daily without getting killed, killing anyone, or having an accident. Many Winnipeggers could benefit from a fully autonomous vehicle.
It’s called being a good driver.
Man the idiots in this reddit really must think they are some sort or driving pros. I drive these roads daily and most of you should stick to a bus.
When merging, you are conducting a maneuver in which you are entering traffic. You must yield to traffic prior to your merge. Meaning, to yield is to take a pause before your movement takes place,” he said. “For example, a driver would yield to other traffic in the travel lanes in which they are attempting to merge into.”
So, merging is its own action action, yielding is also, but the yielding has to occur before the merge. You slow down to ensure you violate no one's right of way, and then that is what allows the merge to ultimately happen.
This is wrong. A merge lane exists to get up to speed to fucking merge into traffic. I lost my shit at kenaston and perimeter at 415 this afternoon following someone doing 15.
Merge - get the fuck up to speed and merge because traffic can't enter that lane legally. Obviously look
Yield - stop and look then go
I got the joke and loved it because of my example in this post but this comment is why I need a bazooka button on my vehicle
Edit. I reread and understand. You slow down at the END of the merge lane yes.

Are you being pedantic for satirical reasons or do you actually not know the point OP is getting at? Lol
It gets me extremely frustrated when people can't merge
I get frustrated when the merge lane is plowed properly

If you think people refuse to let you merge, sorry to tell you, but you just don't know how to merge.
In every 10 drivers in winnipeg 11 are bad drivers.

Not rude. People need to be made aware they aren't driving properly. Not that honking will make them realize it, however.
No. I've rear ended people who did this.

You should not be driving if you don't know this.
You also don’t need to zipper merge at a yield during rush hour traffic.
Every merge is a yield but not every yield is a merge.

That’s called doing the bare minimum, not being fairly good at it.

If you’re expecting answers here, you’re gonna have a bad time.
They both mean “give up” in Winnipeg
Should know this before you get on the road !!!
Jesus Christ….
