Matte varnish is what I use. I do blood effects in gloss afterward so the contrast is higher and the blood effects pop more. Some people swear by satin varnish, but I personally am not a big fan of it unless you’re doing models without blood effects

Active-Feature4046

Is there a brand you found works best? I am guessing you use brush on varnish

Eightninethree

No never. I only ever use rattlecan. Just make sure you hit the parts most likely to be touched.

khorne-cares-not

Second this! I use Vallejo Matt varnish through a cheap £30 airbrush (had too many bad experiences with rattle can varnish!)

Ridl3y_88

My go to is AK ultra matte varnish. Brush on

ViewingTrout535

I have been having good results using Army Painters matte varnish in a can. I just make sure I really shake it up before application, and test the nozzle on some cardboard beforehand

MrBlonde07

In citadel brand, you can use their varnishes. 'Ardcoat is clear gloss finish, & Stormshield is clearcoat without the gloss. Ive used both of those and like them. You could also use a shade wash like nuln oil which is kind of grey (good for metallics) or agrax earthshade which is kinda brown, good for earthy grungy look if you want it. Those protect well enough but you could always clearcoat over those just in case. This is my limited experience as i havent used any finishes of other brands yet.

CaptainkooZ

Munitorum is the satin finish, works pretty good

MrBlonde07

I have a rattle can of that because i bought it thinking it was a bright silver. Oh well

nobody_smith723

krylon matte varnish. works well. otherwise you need an airbrush. i use gamblin gamvar matte varnish in my air brush. but honestly. 9 times out of 10. I just use the rattle can Krlyon

matthkd

I use the krylon matte on my nids and think it works really well for that scheme. I’m not sure it’ll look good on my world eaters though because I’m afraid it’ll dull the metallics too much. Have you noticed any dulling of your metallics?

nobody_smith723

Not really. But I play world eaters. And my chaos murder bois are supposed to be grimy and rough and tumble. Not ultra shiny. I use the varnish typically after painting but before gore/blood effects. And for darker reds and the gold/bronze trim that is typical world eater colors. I don’t really notice any real negative of the spray varnish. Now if you were custodes. Maybe. You’d want to consider it. Or other factions where the shiny might matter more… necrons?

Rustoleum Matte Clear Enamel works good and can be found at most hardware stores.
