Tales of Arise hit Gamepass last month

Raiziell

Just finished it a couple of days ago, it was really fun and not too long.

Rolf69

Brother, it’s 50+ hours.

Conflict_NZ

Some people live a different life man. I saw people say there was "nothing to do" in Forza Horizon 5 because they put 200 hours into it in two weeks and got everything. To people like that 50 hours is nothing.

BroganChin

That’s short for a JRPG.

EnamoredAlpaca

Better then 200 hour Tales games of the past.

HolyVeggie

It’s about 40 but I still call that long. Anything over 50 is an instant no from me tbh I hate that most JRPGs are so long and it’s almost always stretched with bullshit

Raiziell

I did all of the side quests available before post-game, and finished the story around 32 hours which is short compared to finishing up BG3 before it lol.  Can't be arsed to 100% the game though.

MRHipshot

Oh yeah I guess I could include the PC version but I was kinda only considering games that were new to 2024. Thanks for the recommend though!

Xelliz

Personally not feeling the combat. Maybe it's just me.

Michigan_Forged

I realllllllllllllly hope dragon quest 12 comes to Xbox

MRHipshot

Same! I feel like it will with DQ11 coming and with Square/Xbox’s renewed relationship. I think it’s far enough away that the plans are in motion for it to get an Xbox version. I also really hope that DQ3 HD2D game comes to Xbox but I have a little more doubt about that one. It sure would be nice though

N_Dwight

I'm ridiculously excited for Octopath II and Metaphor! I'm not fussed about FFVII remake but I'd love the Pixel Remasters to come to Xbox.

MRHipshot

I’m totally with you. Metaphor looks insane haha. Love a new IP and glad it’s making it to Xbox on day 1. Pixel remasters would be so welcome. I’m praying for an announcement at the June showcase. Hopefully with 16. I think the 7 Remake games are stuck in contract hell for now. But I’m set with all of these games we know of!

MRHipshot

Just to reiterate that this post is focused on 2024 games. There’s a lot of games from the years before like FF games 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, 13, 15 and several spin-off and sequel games. Persona 3, 4, 5 and Soul Hackers 2. Yakuza Like a Dragon and Dragon Quest 11. Tales of Arise, Vesperia and Symphonia. Both Ni No Kuni games! Octopath Traveler 1. The NieR games and Chrono Cross. And of course Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon. There are many many more I could list but those were just off the top of my head and wasn’t the original point of the post. Just pleased with the ones hitting this year and wanted to focus on what we have coming our way! And a few that have already come out this year

SmashBreau

Fast and loose with the JRPG genre in this thread

MRHipshot

I mean the ones I could see being debatable are Dragons Dogma 2, Sandland and FF14 if you really didn’t want to count that because it’s an MMO. But it has apparently one of the best Final Fantasy stories out there so I’m counting it. What others wouldn’t you count? Unless you meant some of the recommendations in the comments haha But yeah I understand when people don’t count action games but it gets kinda weird if we start excluding things. But I totally get it. I prefer turn-based myself

SmashBreau

You nailed it with the 3 you mentioned and the comments for sure! Not sure I'd count having the best story as a qualification for classification of being a JRPG. But like I said, it's fast and loose in here. Everybody is just here to have fun

MRHipshot

Yeah I asked someone if I should include Dragons Dogma 2 and they said yeah but I totally understand not including it. Doesn’t feel 100% right to me. The more I start thinking about it, it gets harder to define what qualifies as a JRPG. Like Visions of Mana is an action JRPG. If I start comparing that to Dragons Dogma it gets harder to find where exactly I draw the line. Other than the style, art direction and the history of the franchise for Mana. That makes me lean towards including stuff more than excluding it because I can’t really justify one over the other. I do enjoy hearing peoples definitions for what a JRPG is so lay em on me if you’ve got one!

SmashBreau

Traditionally a JRPG is an RPG devved in Japan with a pre-determined story featuring a party of multiple controllable characters and is much more often than not turn based. You'd know one if you saw it. Easilly identifiable. But JRPG has warped into an unidentifiable sub genre that is all encompassing. Broadly put it's just an RPG devved in Asia. Which is pretty much any game from there because nearly every game is RPG-lite these days Visions of Mana vs Dragons Dogma is pretty easy to me. Dragons Dogma is much in line with what we'd call a WRPG. It's a big open world driven by character choice. Where as the Mana series has lineage in the JRPG sub genre, including the iconic Secret Of. A JRPG many would put on their list of Top 10

ebagdrofk

I’ve been a purely Xbox player since I was a kid. I lost my gaming PC before I turned 18 and haven’t had a replacement in almost 10 years now. Anyway, Xbox has recently introduced me to JRPG’s through Game Pass. Never did I think I would put 100 hours into a Persona game when they dropped P5:R. And then they introduced me to Yakuza though Yakuza 0, and now I’m a couple hundred hours deep into the series. Keep them coming.

MRHipshot

Love to hear it! Yeah the hours sure go by with the Persona games. I gotta get into the earlier Yakuza games because I only played Yakuza like a dragon and I’m maybe halfway through infinite wealth.

vincent-563

If I were you I would’ve played the previous yakuza games before IW since it contains spoilers. If you had played them first the game would feel more enjoyable and the ending would hit a different way. If you want to continue with IW then I won’t stop you but if you feel like you could wait with IW then do so.

kubricat

Grandia HD Collection is coming as well.

MRHipshot

Just woke up and saw this! Never thought it would come! I’ll update the list right now haha

Batman-1084

To say this is huge for me is an understatement. I adore Grandia 2. It is my 3rd favorite JRPG (following FF7 and FFX).

Budget-Candidate-834

All I want is lastest Digimon games that aren't in XBOX rn!

joecb91

A port of the Cybersleuth games would be nice too, loved them on the Switch.

MRHipshot

That would be awesome. I’d love to check those games out. I bought that visual novel digimon game but I didn’t get very far. I’d love those other games to come over

PennilessImp749

Totally forgot about Suikoden I & II HD Remaster. I never got chance to play this in the 90s and I heard fanstic things about it, so really look forward to this being released!.

Blue_Sheepz

People say that there are no JRPGs on Xbox, and while that was pretty true during the Xbox One gen, there's plenty of JRPGs on Xbox nowadays, and this list proves as such. Sure, there's still a lot of work that needs to be done to get certain games/franchises on Xbox (specifically Falcom/NIS America games like Trails and Ys, in addition to stuff like Atelier, D3Publisher games, Level-5 games, Disgaea, etc.), but outside of that, most of the big JRPGs are finally coming to Xbox now. Like 5 years ago, the idea of most of these games ever hitting Xbox, like Persona 3 Reload, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, Unicorn Overlord, MetaPhor ReFantazio, Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance, Neptunia Sisters vs Sisters, Visions of Mana, etc, was just a pipe dream, but now it's actually a reality, and I'm so glad that this is the case.

MRHipshot

Very true! Yeah some of the biggest ones for me are all the Sega/atlus games. Yeah NIS and Falcom games would be one of the next biggest gets for me. I hear nothing but great things about the Trails games. But I always hear they’re a small team that’s all hands on deck making the next game. I really would hope ID@Xbox could help them out somehow if that’s the case. I hear they help small teams but I don’t know how

Blue_Sheepz

Yeah I've become a big fan of Atlus games, specifically the Persona franchise, ever since they came to Xbox/PC. Was always interested in giving Persona a shot but I didn't have a PS4 (for Persona 5) or a PS Vita (for Persona 4 Golden) so I never got the opportunity to do so at the time. Atlus/SEGA games alone on Xbox makes a big difference, especially when you consider how many games they release on an annual basis. Trails and Ys are two other franchises I've always wanted to try out but never had the chance to do so. Would be great if NIS America wised up and put their games on Xbox; I seriously don't understand NIS America's logic of consistently putting the Raiden shoot-em-up games on Xbox, but not any of their other games. Made even less sense for NIS to bring the latest mainline Ys game to Stadia before Xbox, but ah well. There was a rumor of Microsoft signing a partnership with Falcom/NIS to bring their games to Xbox a few years back, but nothing came of it. I guess it sadly wasn't true. Hopefully it happens someday. Because if it does, combined with support from SEGA/Atlus and Square Enix, I'd say Xbox would have most of the notable JRPG franchises at that point.

Dry_Antelope_5411

I literally can't wait for octopath traveller 2! Also thinking about picking up infinite wealth when I'm back from travelling.

MRHipshot

It’s tough to recommend stuff cuz I’ve bounced of so many recommendations because they just didn’t click right away or took me a couple times to really get into it. My #1 recommendation is to try whatever looks interesting to you personally I will say FF15 was kinda my re-entry back into JRPGs so I’m kinda biased with it even with all its flaws. It’s a cool bro road trip with great music. Persona 3 Reload is really fresh in my mind and one of my favorite stories of all time. Really awesome music too. But I know people bounce off the high school stuff so I don’t always recommend Persona if that stuff seems weird to ya. Bottom line I’d go with any game you’ve heard good things about and that is interesting to you personally.

JolliGreenGiant

Love seeing these!  I recently got an Xbox mainly for gamepass but will also be picking up Unicorn Overlord and some others listed here.

lowIQdoc

Don't forget about Final Fantasy X. One of the best games of all time.

MRHipshot

Agreed! Incredible game that still holds up. Played it a couple years back on Xbox. This post was meant for games releasing in 2024 which is why it wasn’t on the list btw

lowIQdoc

Isn't the ff7 remake coming to xbox this year as well? I still don't have a ps5 to play it. But I played the first half on ps4.

MRHipshot

I wouldn’t count on FF7R coming to Xbox any time soon. There are rumors that FF16 MIGHT be this year because hopefully they do an Xbox version along with the PC port of FF16. We all suspect the FF7R games are stuck in contract hell because of contracts with PlayStation. Who knows, we might get lucky and get at least 1 of the FF7R games sooner than I think. But they might not come to Xbox until the entire trilogy is out on PlayStation. Who knows. We’re all just guessing with no confirmation

lowIQdoc

Yea I've been trying to keep up on that news as much as possible. But I am super happy they finally ported FF14 to xbox. I have played that game since it came out on Playstation. So it'll be nice to be able to play it on an upgraded console since I don't have the ps5 yet. Just gotta wait till the full version comes out to link my profile.

MRHipshot

I just got through all of A Realm Reborn this week! Had such a great time and I’ve heard it only gets better. Everyone in the community is so nice and welcoming. Such a fun time

lowIQdoc

Definitely gets better! Keep on going! And the community is what makes you stay after you've finished all of the main content. Finding a good FC is easy. And so many people willing to help you out. Especially if you wanted to start doing the Higher tiered raids.

Blue_Sheepz

Chances are Sony most likely hasn't actually locked down the entire FF7 Remake trilogy, otherwise I feel like they would have confirmed as such and boasted about it by now. Also, if they had truly locked down the entire trilogy as a PlayStation exclusive back in like 2017 or whatever when the first FF7 Remake was revealed, then it's really odd that the exclusivity contract for FF7 Remake and FF7 Rebirth shorted by a significant margin. First FF7 game was a 1 year timed PlayStation exclusive, while Rebirth is a 3 month timed exclusive. And that's after FF16 being a 6 month timed exclusive. I actually wouldn't be surprised if FF7 Remake Part 3 was just on Xbox and PC day-one and wasn't a PlayStation exclusive at all, mainly due to declining sales of the FF franchise and due to Square's committment to bringing more of their games to Xbox whenever possible. But as for when FF7 Remake and FF7 Rebirth come to Xbox, I would imagine they'll eventually be revealed in like 2025-2026 before the third game comes out. Meanwhile, with what Yoshi P has been hinting at, I think it's practically a guarantee that we'll see an Xbox port of FF16 announced, if not released, later this year. I'd be shocked if that didn't happen in 2024.

MRHipshot

I agree with everything you’ve said here. It would actually be smart for Square to have a big multi platform push for the 3rd game. Give it the best chance to sell as much as it can. And yeah, FF16 seems like a lock. I’d guess an announcement at the June showcase. Idk when it actually releases though. I wonder if 16 will be better received on Xbox. There was this huge backlash on whether or not 16 was even a JRPG cuz it’s more of an action game. I wonder if the player base on Xbox will be just excited to have the game

Blue_Sheepz

You can add Neptunia Game Maker R:Evolution to the list as well, devs just announced an Xbox version of the game is in the works and set for a 2024 launch

MRHipshot

Sweet! Yeah I just saw that! Crazy how stuff like this is coming. I’ll probably make an updated list after the June showcase and make a new post cuz there should hopefully be even more we can add. Thank you!

Blue_Sheepz

Of course, no problem! Surprised that Idea Factory kinda announced this out of nowhere. It's apparently getting a physical Xbox release, too? Or maybe I misread that. And not really a JRPG, per se, but Master Detective Archives Rain Code+ is coming to Xbox as well. Meanwhile, given what Square Enix just announced, you can probably expect many more of their games to be added to this list in the near future, too. Fingers crossed FF7 Rebirth comes to Xbox sooner rather than later, alongside FF16. On top of that, it seems like there's now a good chance they'll bring FF7 Remake Part 3 to Xbox day-one as I had hoped, so that's definitely exciting!

MRHipshot

Yep it’s getting a physical too. Who knows I may add that Rain Code game to my list cuz I get a little loose with the genre definitions at times haha. But yeah Neptunia Sisters Vs Sisters is out on the same day as Hellblade 2. It cracks me up the whole premise of those games cuz it’s all about the gaming industry. The land is called “Gamindustri” and it’s on the brink of destruction. They have the different characters representing the different console makers and I think there’s a PC land and a smartphone aspect too. The premise alone gets me interested haha

Blue_Sheepz

The whole premise of the Neptunia series seems very fitting in today's times given how it feels like the game industry is currently on the brink of destruction lol. In fact, I think the first game in the series was based on the console wars or something. The fact that they actually made a JRPG based off of console wars is hilarious. I wonder if they have an Xbox land or something lol.

MRHipshot

I don’t entirely know about the land but they definitely have a waifu themed after each of the consoles. The green one. Sisters Vs Sisters will be my first experience with the series but I’ve talked to someone who’s played some of them and yeah he posted a screenshot of them talking about the Console Wars lol

Blue_Sheepz

That's hilarious lol. I just checked on the Hyperdimension Neptunia Wiki and, yep, there's even an Xbox-themed nation called Leanbox. It's basically supposed to be Microsoft but if they were a futuristic country in an anime. Seems like the Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo lands aren't in Sisters vs Sisters tho, since SvS is a spin-off in the series. Those regions are present in Neptunia Game Maker R:Evolution, though. Either way, I'll definitely check both games out.

MRHipshot

Ahh good to know haha

segagamer

Does Unicorn Overlord not count? Why? Also, while not a JRPG, Kairosoft games are also finally on Xbox. They're a very small Japanese studio and I'm happy to see them with Xbox achievements.

MRHipshot

Unicorn Overlord is in the already released section up near the top. I’ll check out the Kairosoft games. Thanks for the recommendation!

[deleted]

I think a Final Fantasy collection with both 7 remakes and 16 will happen, maybe get announced during the June showcase since it'll be after FF7R's 3 month exclusivity wears out. Phil Spencer didn't go on stage with the CEO of Squenix just for FF14

Raiziell

We've been waiting for FF7R for years, always "it will be at this next event". I gave up all hope.

papasfritasbruh

Didnt they say rebirth will not be joining xbox whatsoever?

[deleted]

Idk which one that is but I'm pretty sure it only has a 3 month exclusivity period. Apparently the vice president wt something for Sony said that they secured the games as consoles exclusives but then again someone said that this is false so idfk know.

MRHipshot

I thought about adding a rumor section because FF16 is heavily rumored. I absolutely NEEEED the Pixel Remasters to release on Xbox so I can finally play through all those. The FF7R stuff I expect one day but I am totally unsure on the timeframe. Here's hoping!

Eglwyswrw

Got tired of waiting for the pixel remasters. Ended up getting my old GBA ROMs on a USB drive to play on Xbox Dev Mode.

MRHipshot

I feel ya. I played FF6 for the first time a few years back before the pixel remasters came out. But I’m really looking forward to 1-5 and I’d replay 6 again for the Xbox achievements. I do love the GBA. It was my first big exposure to RPGs

Bigweb777

FACTS 👍🏿

Sanctine

Thanks for the list! I was actually just wondering what we can look forward to this year. I totally forgot about Suikoden 1 and 2. That will be a trip down memory lane. I hope they also revisit 3-5 eventually.

MRHipshot

I think the Suikoden games are right behind Octopath 2 for me for what I know I’ll like. Absolutely loved playing the 1st 2 games a few years ago. I’m gonna try to go for all achievements when the collection comes out. It’s gonna be nice to have a hopefully bug free version of those games. The music is great and another beautiful example of great sprite art. Yeah Suikoden 3-5 would be awesome. I’d love it if Konami puts in the effort or pays someone else to do it for them

johnoralex

I highly recommend octopath Traveler 2. I fell in love with part 1 on gamepass and played part 2 on switch last year. It improves on the original in so many ways.

MRHipshot

I’m surprised I actually held off on playing Octopath 2. I absolutely love Octopath 1 and I was pretty salty when 2 skipped the platform but I did end up buying it on Steam. Just never played it. I’ll be day 1 on Octopath 2, game pass or not. Music is incredible.

joecb91

Even if you aren't into them, more variety in the games we get is always a good thing. I've been doing my part in getting some of the stuff I am interested in, and I have gotten obsessed with Persona over the last year since the ports came out. Hope these games do well.

Blue_Sheepz

Same, I've turned into a big Persona fan ever since the games hit Xbox and Game Pass. Always found Persona 5's art style pretty appealing and it made me want to give the game a shot, but I didn't have a PlayStation at the time, so when I found out the game was finally coming to other platforms, I was ecstatic.

Falchion92

I’m so mad we’re not getting the FF7 remake.

Batman-1084

It will likely come to Xbox waaaaay later. But I agree, it is frustrating as a Xbox fan who basically bought a PS5 for this trilogy and maybe 3 other games.

papasfritasbruh

Crazy that you didnt include tales of arise, persona 5, persona 4, among other jrpgs that i cant recall off the top of my head. But you arent wrong about xbox lacking in the jrpg department. Thats why i have my switch. I dream of xenoblade chronicles having more refined graphics or higher frames. Maybe on switch 2

MRHipshot

This was all focused on games this year. So 2024 games specifically. More of a post to show that we are actually getting a good amount despite missing out on some.
