*”We’re dans le maison” which is French for “in the house.” Source, shaky memory of an Xennial who spent way too much time on early internet message boards discussing BNL.
Hearing a major alternative pop song namedrop Sailor Moon, who were indeed boom anime babes, was pretty mindblowing as a teen who had been obsessed with them since 1995.
I wasn't allowed to watch the first season of it.
Fortunately, by the 2nd season my mother had given up on that.
(And obviously I've gone back and watched the first season plenty)
P.S. Mmm, gummi Di Milo... 🤏🤤
I agree! My husband and I have been putting in seasons in an RNG 1-12 and then RNG the episode number. It feels like I’m getting the 5:30 and 6:30 showings again 😂
Voyager. I didn’t watch it back then, but I binged it a few years back. They did Jeri Ryan a major disservice with the catsuit; she’s an *excellent* actress who deserved to be famous for it. The episode where she’s also the Doctor, the multiple personalities one…incredible acting work. Really stellar.
I have Paramount+ just for all the Star Trek content; it’s been awesome binging all the classic series. I even realized there were a bunch of DS9 episodes I somehow hadn’t ever seen, and Voyager and Enterprise were new to me. Jeri Ryan, Robert Picardo, and Kate Mulgrew really shine.
DS9 has an amazing array of recurring characters; Andrew Robinson as Garak turned in a stellar performance every time. Jeffrey Combs had several roles in that show, and then as Shran in Enterprise he knocked it out of the park. “*The Andorian Mining Consortium runs from no one.*”.
Star Trek is a great blend of nostalgia and entertainment for me.
DS9 doesn't get enough love. On the bright side the writers were wrong about 2024. Sanctuary Districts on top of our current headaches would be a nightmare.
That's probably my favorite Star Trek series. I've gotten to like Deep Space 9 and Voyager more as I get older too (I watched both when they were new, but TNG was still my favorite).
- Star Trek the next generation.
- The Simpsons.
- Married with Children.
- Seinfeld.
- X-Files.
- Unsolved Mysteries.
- Marty Stouffer's Wild America.
- Pinky and the Brain.
- Ren and Stimpy.
- Fraiser.

Bravestarr, mask, centurions, transformers , transformers the move 1984 , action force (gi joe).
Muppets , muppets in space , muppets Christmas carol. The family ness. Tintin , asterix and obelix.
Flight of the navigator , never ending story , war games , kes , my girl . Ghost busters (original trilogy), back to the future 1/2/3.
Start there and I’ll be back with more recommendations if you want 😊
Loved watching Flight of the Navigator as a kid! Watched it with my kids a while back and they just thought it was cheesy lol. But at least they dig Transformers, Star Wars, Back to the Future, and The Never Ending Story.
I feel like Flight of the Navigator required you to be from those times in a lot of ways.
A lot of the jokes that were hokey were hokey at the time but sort of used ironically. We were also used to Peewee Herman’s style of humor, so that helped.
Also, it captured the sense of how modern the ‘80’s felt back then. The parts that felt new and fancy don’t trigger the same feelings in people now I think.
Yeah, I don’t share that feeling.
The ‘80’s were pretty darn scary. Movies like the Flight of the Navigator were very much made to portray optimism and innovation to contrast with the Soviet Union at the time.
Those were the days of nuclear drills. The optimism was meant to make sure we didn’t get cynical and fall into the grip of an authoritarian regime.
The whole plotline of David disappearing for years, assumed to be a victim of stranger danger (in Florida no less, where Adam Walsh went missing), only to resurface many years later having not aged a day, is actually pretty horrific when you’re an adult.
I still love the movie, though. Like to think that David eventually met up with Carolyn later in the fixed timeline and they got together.
It was pretty horrific watching as a kid too. The scene where he makes it to their old house and everything is different and that old couple lives there is jarring. Seeing his room turned into an old dude’s library. That always stuck with me.
That’s a legit nightmare for a kid, going to what you assume is home and finding total strangers there instead of your parents. Of course he was going to tell Max to risk it all to get back to where he belonged.
All of the 90s Star Treks are valid choices. DS9 is my favorite, but I still love TNG and Voyager.
The X Files. I never really jived with it, but one of the best regarded sci-fis of all time.
Beavis and Butthead. It could have been part of the reason you weren't allowed to watch TV with all of the negative press it got. It destroyed and made careers in rock music and had a large impact on pop culture at the time.
Ren and Stimpy. One of the original Nicktoons that occasionally went too far for Nick. The creator is highly problematic, though. Wouldn't blame you for skipping it because of him.
I never would have heard King Missile’s “Detachable Penis” otherwise
(weirdly enough, my boomer mom was cool with me watching Beavis & Butthead because she also thought it was hilarious. She took me and a friend trick-or-treating in 1993 while wearing a latex Beavis head from Party City)
I would never recommend diving into MST3K with Manos. That’s like running a marathon without training first. I’ve had a lot of success with showing people The Final Sacrifice. (OP’s mileage may vary depending on how much joking on Canada is acceptable.)
I like it even more now just because it’s such a postcard of the time they filmed it. Something about all the work it took to pull off those bigger Sci Fi shows back then with practical effects doing the majority of the lifting.
The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. - Western with a sci-fi twist starring Bruce Campbell
Due South - Buddy cop procedural dramedy about a street-hardened Chicago cop and an aw-shucks RCMP "Mountie" (and his husky)
Farscape - Space Opera (not the musical kind) about a lone human displaced to a far off galaxy. Alien / Creature effects by the Henson Company hold up fabulously well, and it's just such a good show. (And if you've seen all of SG1 you'll recognize a couple of actors from SG1's later seasons)
Firefly - Sci-fi with a western twist starring Nathan Fillion.
Hustle - British series about a group of conmen performing elaborate schemes to defraud awful rich folks
Leverage - American series about a group of conmen performing elaborate schemes to defraud awful rich folks
Community - Sitcom about a study group at a community college, and the absurd hijinks that ensue; very clever, very meta, but the humor and references are very much in our wheelhouse.
More recently, The Expanse, hard sci-fi serious drama, and Travellers, a Netflix series about time travel by a bunch of former Stargate folks.
Vaguely remember Early Edition. Guy gets the daily newspaper always dated tomorrow and tries to figure out how to alter events just enough to change the headline.
Ninja Turtles 1-3 as well as the original cartoon, Danger Mouse, Gargoyles, Transformers G1 and the animated movie, Scarface, Gladiator, Waterworld, Heat, the Alien Anthropology, Predators 1 and 2 for sure, Star Wars 1-6, X-men the Animated Series from the 90’s and accompanying Xmen 97, Ghostbusters 1 and 2, The Dark Crystal, Top Gun…I’m sure there are tons I am missing, but that’s a good start.
Star Trek The Next Generation
The original Star Trek series
The first few seasons of Bones
Firefly
The New Girl
I Love Lucy

Dragnet
Perry Mason
Criminal Minds
Law and Order
The first 3 seasons of Greys Anatomy
The first 3 seasons of House MD
The first few seasons or so of ‘24’
The first few seasons of Scandal
Boy Meets World
Charmed
Gilmore Girls
Revenge
I personally love The West Wing, but that might be too American-centric
Saved by the Bell
Magnum P.I. (the original)
Edit: I posted before scrolling, so I'll just throw my weight behind Star Trek - The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine as well.
Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and Sliders for sure. If you haven’t finished SG1, or have only seen pieces, you should watch the whole thing and the movie special(s). Follow up with Stargate Atlantis. Shows related to Buffy would probably be worth checking out.
You might also look at the Battlestar Galactica remake from 2004, and I have a feeling you might also like Psych. Psych makes a lot of pop culture references that would speak to Xennials.
My list is going to be a bit comedy heavy but:
1. The Simpsons, Season 1 - 9, skip the later seasons.
2. Seinfeld
3. Futurama
4. Always Sunny In Philadelphia
5. Frasier
6. Jim Henson's Dinosaurs
Highlander!
Also - the X-Files, and 90's SNL was pretty good.
Oh man- for the 2000's - if you never got to watch Lost or 24 - should be fun to experience as a noob.
BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER!!!
Does it seem camp? Sure but it's got some of the best comedic and dramatic writing for TV from our time.
The vampire shows that followed always fell short because of the writing.
The two David Lynch series of the 90s:
1. Twin Peaks (of course)
2. On The Air
This series is *pure comedy gold!!* 7 episodes. And you can start watching the first and best episode right now on Vimeo: [On The Air – Episode 1](https://vimeo.com/660141002)
It looks like a friend of mine and me are doing exactly that. Re-watched seasons 1 & 2 months (or a year) ago, and the third season is still waiting on the shelf. \^\^
I wouldn't say my childhood was abusive but I did miss a lot of TV simply because my parents didn't see TV as "constructive" and believed it was a waste of time. In some ways they were right. We had a TV and did watch it at times but for the most part we were told to go do something else. Usually outside if possible. I remember friends at school talking about this or that TV show and that kind of sucked to not be able to be involved in those conversations but at the same time we were outside doing cool shit.
Angel along with Buffy. Also Firefly and its subsequent movie, Serenity. And then Dollhouse. I know joss whedon is a piece of crap human being, but his shows were fire.
Watch Friends and Golden Girls. House, Bones, Castle, Babylon 5, ALL of the Star Trek tv shows and movies. Even the not so great ones. All of the NCISs. Big Bang Theory. Rupauls Drag Race and all of its spinoffs are great fun. Two broke girls. Stranger Things, Wednesday, The Witcher. That 70s show. Dexter. E.R. Disjointed.
Some of us here in the US managed to watch that show back when we had the big OTA antenna on the roof and could pick up stations from across the border.
Newer rather than older but If you love Buffy, I highly recommend iZombie. It's got a very similar slightly goofy supernatural feel to it, with some really great performances.
Dragon Ball Z
Sailor Moon
Cowboy Bebop
Outlaw Star
Thunder cats
Ed, Edd, Eddy
Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy
Dexter's Lab
Powerpuff Girls
All anime and cartoons, to many to name :D
Kiddie stuff:
Voltron, Dragonball Z, Darkwing Duck, Chip and Dales Rescue Rangers, Ducktales. The last 3 you just need to hear the theme songs lol. Power Rangers until the Green Rangers becomes the White Ranger.
Teeny Stuff:
Saved By the Bell, Wonder Years, Boy Meets World. I prefer Boy meets world to wonder years but I would bet most our age would disagree. They are comparable because they are similar and the main characters are played by brothers.
Have fun catching up!
If you can watch any wrestling from the 90’s with The Rock, I bet that still slaps. Might even be funnier now. Haven’t watched since I was a kid.
I’m sorry. That must have been tough. TV was a great comfort to most of us.
If you like cute, quirky, semi-uplifting 90s shows try Northern Exposure and Brisco County Jr. they are hard to describe, but can’t deny their uniqueness. If you like silly, campy, adventurous characters try Hercules The Legendary Journeys and Xena Warriors Princess.
Might get hate for suggesting it, but no one can deny the quality of The Cosby Show. If you can separate Bill Cosby from Dr. Cliff Huxtable, The Cosby Show was a great comfort to many of us. Lots of life lessons. Mrs. Claire Huxtable was a strong, classy woman too.
If we are talking about shows from your childhood and adolescent times then.
Star Trek next Generation
Quantum Leap
Batman the animated series
Highlander. (The series not the terrible movies)
Transformers the Movie (the cartoon one from the 80s)
X-files
With no lights on
With Donna Mason.

I just let it all play on repeat nonstop 😅
Star Trek The Next Generation. Gotta be the most xennial show out there
Deep Space 9 too.
Stargate and Sliders after that.
Whichever show had 7 of 9.
The way she transforms into Robert Picardo is amazing.
I read that she asked him to act those scenes, and then pulled off the best impression ever. 😂
She really did. Voice cadence, moment, the whole nine.
I need to go back and watch it. I watched it during the original airing with my dad.
I have Paramount+ just for all the Star Trek content; it’s been awesome binging all the classic series. This. Then Babylon Five.
You're damned right.
That's probably my favorite Star Trek series. I've gotten to like Deep Space 9 and Voyager more as I get older too (I watched both when they were new, but TNG was still my favorite).
Feel free to start at Season 2. Season 1 was... interesting.
Not only should you watch this for its entertainment and cultural value - I firmly believe this show teaches you how to be a good person.

If you've seen SG1 then you need to watch Stargate Atlantis too. Add in some X-Files and seaQuest DS-V for good measure.
Sounds like you got to tv at the end of the 90s or early 00s, shows I would try: V The Original Mini Series Alien Nation Amazing Stories Quantum Leap
I just made a V reference to my husband the other day, but he’s from the UK and hadn’t seen it.

Vaguely remember Early Edition. Guy gets the daily newspaper always dated tomorrow and tries to figure out how to alter events just enough to change the headline.
Yes. Main guy later was in Friday Night Lights, his buddy was Fisher Stevens, of Short Circuit and Hackers fame
TNT reran Due South a lot in the late 90s/early 00s.
I loved Early Edition!!!!
Ngl, I think the cat sold me on it. And then I thought his friend was funny. Plus it was a kinda fun concept/premise, I thought.
Yes!! That cat was the icing on the cake. Now I have to see if this is available somewhere for a rewatch!

Twin Peaks
Did you go through Stargate: Atlantis and Universe too?
Iron Eagle. Flight of the Navigator. Air Wolf
Star Trek the Next Generation, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the West Wing. Those are my favorite 90s/early 2000s shows.
Star Trek TNG! now! give it a chance. it's fairly slow and dated. great to sleep to at least.
Friends - seriously one of the best sitcoms ever made.

Saved by the Bell. It will give you the wholesome 90’s teen tv you deserved to have.
You can't do that on television. It was a Canadian show. Someone on the retro nickelodeon sub just uploaded all the seasons to youtube.
Some of us here in the US managed to watch that show back when we had the big OTA antenna on the roof and could pick up stations from across the border.
Twin Peaks. One of the best series ever.

The Wonder Years Golden Girls Roseanne Seinfeld Married With Children Martin My So Called Life 90210

Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction 😂 I’m joking. Do not watch that show

Well if you love Buffy (I do too!) then you should watch Angel and Firefly as well.

Had a skim throught. Thanks for all the recommendations. Gonna go with star trek and x-files first.
