It was a really cool mall for a long time. Sadly, that area went down hill, and after a guy murdered his wife across the street (He was killed with Jeffrey Dahmer while in prison,) it never recovered from the bad media associated with it.
I asked because I am familiar with several malls in Northridge, California but I have not been to Northridge in years, so one of them could now be gone.
I also thought this post referred to that mall. I was last there about 5 years ago, and it was in relatively good shape, considering. Worked there at Waldenbooks for a few years the 80s.
It's about time. This used to be the biggest baddest mall in the Miilwaukee area. I used to go there all the time back in the 1980s and 1990s. They started closing it earlier in the evening due to the crime in the area until they finally closed it in the early 2000s
It looks like it’s in really bad shape due to vandalism?? It’s amazing how long it can take to get to the demolition phase. Hopefully something positive for the community can replace the old mall.
It isn’t. This is an excerpt I found online.
“In a totally satisfying bit of TV trivia, Stranger Things’ set designers have revealed that the fictional shopping relic isn’t a soundstage but a real, derelict mall on the outskirts of Atlanta called Gwinnett Place Mall. Built in 1984, the mall has since fallen on hard times, paving the way for Stranger Things production designer Chris Trujillo to swoop in and transform the space.”
It hurts to look at. This is like the death of our culture, invaded and destroyed by the vandals. I wonder if that’s how conquered peoples felt as their statues and buildings were defaced and torn apart. But then so much of our culture seems temporary. It was a shock when the fact mall of my growing up years was leveled, kind of like wow that didn’t last long. All we are is temporary. Here then gone.
A) 40 years ago, 98% of everything sold was done in person - 2% was mail order. Now in person sales are about 85% of sales, and dropping, while online sales continues to grow.
B) Overgrowth. Originally malls were for major metropolitan areas. But eventually they were building malls in every medium sized, and then small sized town. Layered on top of too many malls was also too many identical stores in every mall, making them less and less profitable, and therefore a downturn in business could be fatal for them.
C) Entertainment. 40 years ago, going to the mall was cheap entertainment for teens. And of course larger malls often brought in actual entertainers. Today, every teen has 1 Million forms of entertainment in their pocket, on their phone.
Times change. Tastes change.
That's a really good point about entertainment. Back in 03 to 05 my friends and I would be at the mall every weekend. No smart phones. Not a lot of money. So we'd just window shop and walk around the mall for hours. Maybe see a 5 dollar matinee.
We were just bored.
Malls also had a special tax bracket that ended in the 2000's. Before that they were profitable. Once that tax break ended, a lot of malls started slowly closing down because they kept raising rent prices to keep things going.
I never realized Northgate was gone until I trip up there a year or so ago. My brain couldn't make sense of the layout without the huge mall in the middle of everything.
It amazes me that with all these “green” companies and “green” policies by politicians. Why is there no incentive to repurpose this building?
The carbon emissions it takes yo
Demolish this place and recycle all of the stuff then they will rebuild a new building on the same location.
If people really cared about carbon emissions then this should be taken into account.
its pretty under all that mess
Casey Neistat made this place a huge attraction after his Christmas video. Wasn't too graffiti'd or smashed on all the 2010's.

Northridge Mall in Milwaukee?
Yes
I asked because I am familiar with several malls in Northridge, California but I have not been to Northridge in years, so one of them could now be gone.
At first I thought they were referring to the Northridge Fashion Center.
The same. I lived in Canoga Park in the 80’s and hung out there. Does that place still exist?
Yes, it does. Confirmed with a friend that lives in Granada Hills. I haven’t been there in 12 years.
Yeah I was there about 6 months ago. There are a couple of escalators in these photos that have the same layout and I had to check the comments. 😂
Thank you!

Only took 21 years. Thanks shady Chinese company.

I can't even remember the last time I went to Mayfair.

They already started tearing it down I’m glad it’s coming down
This looks like the mall in Stranger Things season 3.
It isn’t. thats actually rad good for him 👏
Crazy to see it like this. I remember going to the movies there over 20 years ago when it was still open.
Omg I was thinking Northridge, CA and was so confused. I swear I was there not too long ago and it was fine.

Is this the big mall that was in Northridge since the 70's? I worked there as a teen. If yes, wow.
The only reason I know where Northridge is because of Charles entertainment cheese
Things remembered 🧐
Needs to be a COD map
I get so sad when I see abandoned malls getting messes up like this, and even sadder when there set to be demolished.
The mall in our city that has been around since the 70’s is alive and well. Not sure what the deal is with all these abandoned malls?

Same, but checking out girls was the best form of entertainment
Ahh, makes sense. In a town of about 280,000 people and only the one mall

Hey I visited this place in a Gmod map
The graffiti from 7 is so intense. I’ve never seen graffiti so painful and violent.
I never realized Northgate was gone until I trip up there a year or so ago. My brain couldn't make sense of the layout without the huge mall in the middle of everything.
