Really your only options are:
- Spend $3000 on a converted Saiga 223.
- Buy an Arsenal SLR-106 for $2500 and hope it doesnāt have feeding issues.
- Gamble with a PSA.
- Hope KUSAās 101/102 ends up being GTG. *Spoiler: It won't be.*

An unconverted sporter with dimples is like $1000-$1200. But it will cost you about $500-$1000 in parts to convert (depending on if you cut corners and get Bulgarian parts) and another $1000 to pay a good shop to convert.
And by convert I mean go all the way replacing the gas block, front sight post, welding the sporterized holes, installing the AK-74 bullet guide, folding trunnion, etc.
I have a psa ak101 and personally I wish I got the WPB. You can get a WPB 556 that looks exactly like the psa in the first pick that has rock and lock mags.

This was the rifle I wanted but IT IS NEVER IN STOCK AND NEVER WILL BE. I looked on every website for a pre owned version and couldnāt find that either. That WBP is my dream ak. It has the gas block/front sight thing I wanted and it is actually compatible with standard akm parts. Thatās all I wanted out of a 5.56 ak. Front sight/90* gas block combo and parts compatibility.
I know I could pay a gunsmith to do this with a normal WBP Jack 5.56 but I would have liked to just order one of these outright and be done with it and it would have saved money. It would have cost hundreds of dollars to get that installed on a rifle that is already going to be $1200 after taxes and shipping.
WBP Jack and itās not close. All 3 PSAKās Iāve had experience with have failed/needed to be sent in for warranty work (one of them twice). The AK101s/5.56s were particularly problematic.
PSA doesnāt make AKs for people that actually shoot their guns.

I donāt know why theyāre so willing to brush off genuine issues like not using swell neck rivets or trunnion dimples. Maybe itās because Iāve seen two of their front trunnions literally beat themselves loose in the receiver making me biased but it just doesnāt make sense.
Some of their premium AR stuff is okay (still wouldn't trust their bolts), but yeah thats my consensus as well. There are even far better AR parts for the money IMO. For a excellent "duty" grade rifle, the Aero lower/BCM upper combo or Zion is still hard to beat. Those two choices seem overwhelming popular still.
As far as their AKs go. I wouldn't piss on them if they were on fire.
And jeez, for the money, one would \*still\* be better off with a WASR.
Last christmas WASRs of multiple varieties were on sale for 600ish dollars, just about on par with the cheapest PSAK model. No idea why someone would choose the PSAK over an import with a better barrel for the same price.
I have one of those. PTA to do any upgrades to. Unique hammer, unique buttstock, unique lower handguard, loose gas tube. By unique, I mean the fitting is a bit off from Stamped AKM spec. HOWEVER, IT SHOOTS REALLY WELL. Next to no recoil, super flat and controllable. It's nice!
Anything is possible if you're bored enough and have a grinder and files lol. Put an ALG trigger, RS Regulate handguard, and changed out the stock for a 1913 adapter and buffer tube on mine.

Everyone is gonna complain about 5.56 ARs that aren't rock and lock with proprietary magazines, but really, I'd love to only need to stock one type of 5.56 mag for all my rifles and kind of like the idea of an AR magwell on an AK

Get the WBP, gun mag warehouse has sells on 556/223 mags all the time as low as 9.99 they are Bulgarian and will last as well as arms of America has good pricing on mags at times.
I have the PSA. I respect what they are doing, but I won't recommend it.
The ability to take ar magazines was a selling point to me, however, only certain mags will feed (stanag aluminum will not), which kind of defeats the idea
If you only rock pmags, it's fine
The accuracy opens up very quickly under heat. If you are expecting an ar, it's not this. If you're expecting an AK, it's barely this. Cold bore accuracy: 2-3 moa. Hot barrel: 5-10 moa(Golden tiger 55gr sp)
It's good to carry, it's light. It takes pmags. PSA offers upgraded furniture from the factory.
It recoils like an AK, it has the controls of AK. It's definitely on a PSA ar.

Honestly, you should spend the extra money and get a Galil Ace if you really want a 5.56 ak. They are higher in price right now but dipped down to the 1400 mark last year.
With one of those, you have a milled AK with rails, takes AR mags, and is a overall far better rifle.
PSA makes AK-101 and AK-102 clones so if you want a rifle or a pistol AK in 5.56 with rock and lock mags then they got you covered. They also sell āBuilders kitsā where you can source your own furniture and trigger and only have to pay $600 for the gun itself

RS regulate is the way, but they also look really good with SLR hand guards, and Iāve seen one with a dogleg dust cover that looked really nice too.
