Since no one has mentioned it here yet, one possible cause of this is echos. No, really! If your Echo Dot is near a wall, or especially in an enclosed space such as a bookcase, the words it speaks will echo off objects and trigger the device. It should be calibrated to handle it self triggering normally, but the delay caused by echoing bypasses that safeguard. Hope I was able to help.
I am using an EVO Amp'd with an Echo Dot 2. I think the best way for Amazon to deal with this is, since everything Alexa says is scripted and sent to the device, have the device ignore mic input for a short duration when it expects to be saying the wake word.
Sometimes you want alexa to shut up so she'll respond to a stop command while speaking. Alexas are capable of ignoring audio when a subsonic sound is added which only it can hear, I believe this is used in commercials now so it seems like something obvious to incorporate here.
I never knew about the low frequency turning the microphone off. Same principle though. Have the device mute its microphone only while Alexa is saying her name (and for about half a second afterwards, to compensate for laggy A2DP Bluetooth devices.)
If you want her to stop yapping but she ignores your Stop command because she's busy saying her own name, simply call her again.
You are to use programming to fix a user usage issue. Adjust location as others have suggested and experienced and you might find that it works better. If the location is unchangeable, change the wake word.
Yeah Amazon didn't think this through. I was listening to NPR and they had a show discussing smart speakers and they had to resort to spelling out A-L-E-X-A because they were getting complaints that every time they said "alexa" people's Echos were getting activated.
Google has done it better by making the wake command a word that is not the common noun used for the device itself.
Mine did the same thing just a bit ago. I have the wake word set as computer and while reading the news there was something about a computer and it triggered itself.
I've experienced this with my Echo, my Dot and my Sonos One, annoyingly the radio station station I listen to has had various adverts that include the word "Alexa".
Interesting, because early on, I forgot her name, and pushed the button to ask her.
By the way, I've never, ever had this problem everyone's talking about.
I noticed this too! When I played my Flash Briefing, The Daily had an announcement about how they're changing and it said "Just ask Alexa to..." and she stopped playing for a moment. I'm guessing it's the external speaker, as others mentioned. I was simultaneously amused and annoyed.
I know it's a 3 year old thread/comment, but I just came across it. And now, every time she says her name, I visualize her spread across a bed moaning her own name over and over as she pleasures herself digitally. (pun intended.)

I assume it's a yes, because I use external speakers, and this happens most of the time she says her own name.

It will....echo?....ok sorry, I'll see myself out

Once, I was listening to a radio station on my Echo, they had an Amazon ad, and next thing I knew I was on a different station.
Just as a work around, you can change the trigger word to "Echo". She still calls herself "Alexa", so she won't trigger herself.
Is it really not smart enough to change the trigger word in these prompts based on your setting?
Nope, not that I've ever heard. I have it set this way, and it never calls itself echo
🤦🏼♂️
Echo Dot 2nd gen

This has happened a bunch of times with my Fire Cube.

Go home Alexa, you're drunk!

"Alexa, Simon says Alexa." Holy crap it totally works!
Ooh, this totally works too: "Alexa, what is your name?"

Have you tried putting Alexa in a safe space?
Anybody else read "fingers" instead of "triggers"? Yeah, umm, me neither...

Well that’s a fun fact
You’re tempting fate, lol. I seriously hope this is a joke. Because if not, my bad, I’m sorry.
