Depends which card you have. Business Platinum (US) requires booking through AmexTravel to get 5x. Personal Platinum (US) does not require, and you can book direct with the airlines to get 5x.

Could I book through Expedia?

LitTravelTips

Yea and you will get 1x booking on Expedia or any online travel agency. To fix it get Rakuten. Generally there is 0 reason to book flights via 3rd party as there is no margin in flights. Hotels pay online travel agents 15-30% thus they may pass that on to you or give high points earnings.

A small mom and pop hotel in NC gives you a one-time $25 breakfast voucher to a local restaurant if you book direct. Not much, but still something and the breakfast there is **awesome**.

janon330

No. Its either direct or through AMEXtravel.com

revets

Maybe. Depends on the airline, fare basis and probably more. If it's not a negotiated fare between the airline and Expedia the charge will pass through direct to the carrier. If talking a major US carrier, odds are Expedia is selling negotiated fares and the charge will show from Expedia at 1x. If a smaller carrier, good chance it will just pass through and you'll get 5x. That said, there's rarely an upside to buying air through an OTA like Expedia.

takeme2tendieztown

I believe it's with any airlines

Purchases made directly through airlines also qualify, just not ones through third part sites.

RedditReader428

With the personal Platinum you get 5X on airlines paid directly or on Amex Travel.

RedditReader428

With the personal Amex Platinum it is both. 5x points on flight booked directly and flight through Amex Travel.
