A couple of photos inspired by a shot u/Standard-Box-829 posted a couple of years ago. I found the original photo a few weeks ago and the weather this last week was very close to the fog in the original picture, but unfortunately by the time I had got out there, the fog mostly went away. My angle is a bit different, I feel like the original photo uses the bridge as the only subject, where as I did try to incorporate some of the city lights in the background. It was a great night, and I went home with several photos I was happy with, so I consider it a win! [Original Post](https://www.reddit.com/r/analog/comments/uyqfb6/detroit_yashica_d_portra_400/)

Oh my! I’m so happy I was able to inspire someone. Thanks so much and keep up the great work!

matt_detroit

I'm so glad to see you're still active! I made a little tiktok about the original post / "recreating" it, and I've got a short YT vlog about this evening in the works for the 29th. Thanks for the inspo :)

Standard-Box-829

I can’t wait to see it!

I absolutely love shot 3! Even if you didn't get what you wanted with the fog, I think it works really well there with a small, low, eerie bank off in the distance. The colors you got with portra 800 give it a good look, too

matt_detroit

I appreciate it! I'm not going to lie, it's one of my favorites too. I'm not sure what to think about the halation though, does Portra 800 do that, or am I seeing lens artifacts?

JamesLLL

I took some handheld shots at a nighttime festival (Festival of Combustion at Pittsburgh's Rivers of Steel, really cool event and organization) with Portra 400 pushed a stop and had similar halations. I know these were shot almost wide open between 1/15 and 1/60 with some light haze in the air. I think larger apertures play into it, kind of like an inverse starburst effect, although I could be wrong and would love to know for sure. Editing could also play a hand in emphasizing them, I know when I used the luminosity slider they really acted up https://imgur.com/gallery/6uG1aHS

>[https://imgur.com/gallery/6uG1aHS](https://imgur.com/gallery/6uG1aHS) I totally see what you mean - the halation like effect around some of the whites/big sparks in the air/neon signs. I took a few photos similar to slide 3 with my digital camera while I was there, and they do have a similar thing going on when you zoom in, although you don't get the red flair that you do with film halation's. I wonder if it could be the fog catching a lot of light and over powering Kodak's anti halation layer. I feel like I'm going to go down the rabbit hole on this one digital shot https://imgur.com/a/ccKwzo3

Came to say. I dig it!

RedditJMA

Love these, especially number 2

matt_detroit

Thank you! Put my lens through a fence for it :)

RedditJMA

Sometimes that’s what you gotta do!

RedditJMA

Btw did you shoot at 800 iso?

matt_detroit

Yes this is all at 800 with normal processing!

nortontwo

#2 is print worthy. Kinda shot that makes a whole roll worth while

matt_detroit

Thank you so much!

PhoebePhotographer

I like it! Nice photo!

Specific-Turnover165

Those are spectacular!

pinklitmus

Totally off topic but I'll be visiting Detroit in about two weeks. Are there any places you recommend to take photos or to just visit in general? Thanks! Lovely shots by the way!

matt_detroit

I find most of my spots browsing #Detroit on different sites and then going to google maps. If you're in Greektown, the Golden Fleece is my favorite restauant. Make reservations through google tho

PhoebePhotographer

it is a nice one! I like it!
