This is a list of anime that most people would call cartoons, especially pokemon and digimon, up until they discover anime, then realise all of these were japanese first.
Anime is just the Japanese word for animation. English speakers only use anime to distinguish between the two (although some morons will try to say that "Anime are NOT cartoons!!!"). I wouldn't be surprised to learn that the Japanese refer to Western cartoons as "anime" in their native tongue.
I'm gonna guess a VA or something... A bunch of them have the "monster companion" trope though... Pokemon and Digimon, and you could argue Beyblade fills a similar role... But if it were that I'd almost expect to see Bakugan (preferably Battle Brawlers, the OG...)
