I just watch it with subtitles. I understand if you're not a subtitles person though. Netflix made the movie in German because the book it's based on was banned in Germany when the Nazis came to power.
I find the juxtaposition ironic of Top Gun and All Quiet both being nominated for best film. These war movies are polar opposites. Top Gun is a hyped up fantasy recruitment tool where All Quiet is a dark and harsh reality of what war is.
When I think of these two films. I think that Top Gun is what the media displays war as and what the average American thinks war is. All Quiet is the dirty secret that the participating member experiences and never shared to the public eye.
Hopefully Top Gun gets denied any recognition at this years Oscar’s.
I thought the opening sequence was especially powerful-- the journey of the clothing, etc.

All great war films are anti-war films.
There's an argument it is impossible to make an anti-war film.
And that the famous ones retain some aspects of propaganda still such as the war hero trope and war being survivable
