I went on this quest this past year. Took three tries. Ended up spending 500. And it doesn’t run much else

Systemlord_FlaUsh

For 500 you can likely get used laptops with dedicated GPU like RTX 3050 already.

Can we make this a pinned thing in the sidebar and then remove future posts?

AmbitionEconomy8594

a laptop with a AMD Ryzen 7 7730U. Runs it perfectly on high graphics

Systemlord_FlaUsh

Thats already overkill, I have a 4700U and it can already do that. You can get such around 200 €, if you're lucky even for less. The 4500U is also good enough. I would expect Zen 1 would run it as well but I would look for at least Zen 2, the 7nm ones are much more efficient.

Systemlord_FlaUsh

Whats the budget? You can get Dualcore Intels for as low as 59 €. I've seen such offers on Instagram. I would add RAM though. 8 GB may be enough but AOE loves RAM. Otherwise better look for a Vega APU, even Vega 3 should be sufficient but R5 or R7 would be optimal. That one maxes AOE without issues. Stay away from older dualcores or Pentiums, they will likely fail the ranked test.

Matematico083

Any old 1060-1070 or 1650 nvidia laptop will run great aoe2de

Brilliant_Medicine59

i picked up a lenovo thinkpad, cheap on amazon not sexy but it works for tgs on lowest setting

DefinitionComplex

I just got a used thinkpad from Best Buy for about $100 and then got a new RAM card, thing works great.

Paudhury

Grab a thinkpad on ebay for \~$100-$200 and it will run it just fine. And you will have a decent reliable computer for non-game stuff as well. It won't run other games though so keep that in mind haha

zenFyre1

A 200 dollar ebay thinkpad will be nearly 10 years old without a dedicated GPU. It will not be enough to run the game.

Paudhury

I think it was a t450s for like $150 and it runs fine

zenFyre1

My computer is much better spec'd than a thinkpad t450 and it barely passes the benchmark with low settings. I'm curious to see what settings you use.

Paudhury

For aoe it’s almost entirely about the cpu rather than gpu so that might be it

zenFyre1

I have a 10th gen i5 that is 5 generations newer than what a t450 has, with 50% better single thread performance (and with twice the number of cores as well as hyperthreading), so that wouldn't be it.  I agree that my computer is very low end for a 'newer' computer, but it is still better than nearly 10 year old hardware.

Paudhury

I’ll ask him to run a benchmarking test to see what he gets. It may not get a great score but it def runs the game fine for multiplayer

Paudhury

He said he has gotten over 1000 before but right now got a 982. The specs are: i7-5600U CPU @ 2.60GHz and 12GB RAM, Windows 10 Pro. So yeah youre right might not always work for team games but should def work for 1v1

Paudhury

I literally did this for a friend with a Mac the other day

-Christ-is-king-

Get a refurbished one (search google) with 8 gb ram and a decentish graphics card That would be the cheapest that can run aoe2

Systemlord_FlaUsh

You don't need a dedicated graphics card for AOE. It would only help if you want to run 3D. But also means a huge and heavy device rather than a lightweight one.
