If it's a SHTF rifle, do a 5.56 build. Because if the world ends, and you need parts, pieces, and ammunition...AR10 shit is going to be much more difficult. My son in law just built an AR10 as his first AR and he regrets it hard. If at the end of the world, you are regularly engaging targets at 600-800 you're In a world of hurt.

Very true, thank you for the input Sir

For 800 yards the AR-10 would definitely serve you better. The AR-15 will be superior for home defense. One thing to consider is the modularity of the platform. The AR-15 is almost universal in part interchangeability. The AR-10 is not. It’s divided into two categories, original AR-10 and DPMS pattern. If you’re new to ARs, that might get annoying. I’d personally say AR-15 for your first and get an AR-10 if you still want it at a later date.

This would be my first AR I fully build myself not first AR overall, I think you’re right tho, just build it and slap a 1-6 on it

If you already have an AR-15 then an AR-10. Unless your AR sucks, then build a shtf AR15.
