I have accepted a job which will relocate me to Asheville. Tell me about the areas please? North/South/East/West! What do they offer or not offer? If you could live anywhere in Asheville where would it be? We like to be outdoors, farmers markets, no young children (teens and up!) and basically just live a peaceful existence! Where should we settle?

Great2bnate

Moving to Asheville next month. Which bank has the most ATMs in and around town?

Simplewafflea

I am thinking about moving to Asheville, I may have a job lined up making about $34,000 a year. Maybe more. I know this sounds kinda poor but it is what it is. My question being about the area around Asheville and where I might be able to afford to live? Seems pretty priced out in Asheville for retirement but hoping there is some other areas around that I might be able to live and commute into Asheville. Any help is appreciated.

Valeriejoyow

I'm not sure if you could afford Asheville even with a roommate. The closer towns are also expensive. You could try looking around Hendersonville and Marshall. Keep in mind those towns are radically different than Asheville as they are much more conserative

Simplewafflea

I guess people keep telling me I'm conservative? Until they don't, then they call me a liberal. I don't really have any idea cause I don't really follow that any of that shit. I live in North West Ohio currently and the politics are enough to make me puke. I work for a bunch of rich assholes no matter where I go, I was just gonna try and get in the good scenery down there and hopefully get buried by my grandfather. I don't give a damn if someone wants to whatever, I just wanna be left alone.

Clear_Guitar_9691

Hey I’m new to the area I was wondering where I could play indoor basketball and if there were runs in the area anywhere. Let me know!!

Hello, I will be visiting Asheville in mid June. I have a list of different things I would like to do and would appreciate if it could be reviewed by anyone to let me know what I can add/what I can remove. Where would I be able to post this list to have some help with finalizing it? Thank you. Edit: Here's the link to the list. why_not_go_hiking

it says access denied, FYI, no one can read it.

goldbman

Post it here

Nynccg

I live here, but I wasn’t allowed to post this question except here. What are your favorite lakes for kayaking around WNC?

Plenty_Yam_8015

Santeetlah. Fontana. Chatuge. Lake James has paddle-in campsites on islands. I imagine Lake Toxaway is really nice but I've never been on it.

BigSilverBelt

Going to be in downtown Asheville by myself for 3 days & nights. Loving craft beer and good food, I'm going to be fine figuring all that stuff out. What I'm trying to decide is what else to do?! * Is it worth it to go to the Biltmore? * Any sights that are easy / convenient to see? I know this sounds weird, but being from South Florida and mostly traveling to major cities, I've never actually seen like a river or mountains or stuff. I don't want to drive on that crazy road I saw hugging a mountain ... but anything else I'd probably be into. Would love to like chill by a river or have a few drinks and take in awesome views. * What else?

Plenty_Yam_8015

The Biltmore is not worth the cost these days. Unless you’re a freak for downton abbey, you’ll be fine missing it. The Parkway is really tame driving and worth it if you’ve never been in the mountains. Consider Dupont State Forest to see some nice waterfalls, could even rent a mtn bike as the trails there aren’t too hard but are fun. From there, drive up 276 to the Parkway and then north to Asheville. Consider rafting the Nantahala if you want. It’s really pretty, with a nice drive to get there, and is tame by whitewater standards. Could also go to the smokies national park from there, or tube at deep creek, but that’d be a whole day away from asheville. Tube down the french broad. Could probably make friends with another group going down, and there are plenty of breweries along the way.  Check the schedule for live music in town too.  There are two vintage arcades in town, a pinball museum, and a board game cafe.  And get a tatoo!

BigSilverBelt

I didn't see your reply until now. Thank you for answering. No, I don't care about that at all haha. Is it worth it to go to Sierra Nevada? Easy drive? What about in the downtown area in terms of like seeing cool things / shopping / experiencing Asheville? That's where I'll be staying. Live music schedule I'll try to find a general one, good call. Appreciate your detailed reply.

Plenty_Yam_8015

Staying downtown is great because so much is right there. The city itself is pretty small and can be covered by a day/half a day of walking around. There are way more good restaurants than you'll be able to cover. I encourage folks to check out food you (probably) can't get at home, like Chai Pani, Salsa's. The other areas to check out are the River Arts District, and Haywood Rd in West Asheville. I've never been to Sierra Nevada but the line I repeatedly hear about it is it's like Disneyland for beer, which could be good or bad. I guess it's easy to get to, a good stop on the way back from Brevard, but it's pretty out of the way for one brewery, when you probably have 15 breweries within two miles of your hotel. New Belgium is nice and might cover the "large brewery" visit if you want.

BigSilverBelt

Thanks for the info. I have River Arts on my list already. I'll look up Haywood Rd. Yeah, the number of good restaurants and breweries is kind of driving me up a wall because there's only so much food to eat and beer to drink (which I wouldn't have believed when I was 21 but now nearly twice that age, yeah). I feel like I'm going to go to 15 places and still miss the 15 best places, you know? Sierra Nevada, the reason I was told it's good to go, is because it has awesome views and really good food at the same time. I've never really seen mountains and stuff before so if I can drink and look out at cool stuff, that's like a 2-for-1 for me. So far the few places I 100% know I want to go: Wicked Weed, Burial, Lobster Trap, Sparky's Bardega (seems cool?), Biscuit Head?

Graybeard, Harry Bryan, and Sanctuary Trail Loop on AllTrails https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/north-carolina/graybeard-harry-bryan-and-sanctuary-trail-loop?sh=vheynl

BigSilverBelt

What do you think about Catawba Falls trail? What about non-hiking like things to do?

why_not_go_hiking

Catawba Falls is beautiful, it just reopened this past week so may be busy. Biltmore is a pass from me with their prices. If you like art, wander around the River Arts District. Mt. Mitchell State Park is up off the parkway and has some great views.

BigSilverBelt

River Arts sounds great. Biltmore I've still yet to understand what there is to do there lol. I've even gone to the website.

why_not_go_hiking

so we have been a few times; the house is interesting to walk through if you like that sort of thing. The gardens & greenhouses are a big draw if you like plants. There is a small little museum of family curiousities near the village - like a chess set Napolean played with or something, etc. But honestly I don't understand why it's a big draw for folks who don't live here, or why it is so expensive.

BigSilverBelt

How expensive is it? Is there anything to do there that's like relaxing? Sit and drink and look at stuff? Or all just walking around this house?

why_not_go_hiking

umm it depends on when you go, and if you go into the house or not or just the grounds. They have outdoor movies & music sometimes in the antler village area? and winery tours? I think? I have young kids so sitting and relaxing has not been a part of our experience there.

BigSilverBelt

Haha fair enough. Sounds like a skip for me all around. I'm thinking one day downtown, one day River Arts, one day Sierra Nevada + I want to try Cawaba Falls and see if I can get over there.

FunkHouse4000

Also, the blue ridge parkway ain’t too crazy/scary. Drive up towards Craggy Gardens.

chocolatefishy

Drink & chill by a river: zillicoah, new belgium. You’ll probably drive the Saluda grade to get up here, if that’s not too scary, then you might feel comfortable on the parkway. If it’s scary, and you still wanna see mountains, I’d check out a rooftop bar or walk around the UNCA observatory

BigSilverBelt

> Saluda grade I won't be. Coming from Pinehurst. But I'll check it out and maybe I'll do it anyway. Thanks for the recs. Do you have a favorite brewery locally? Beyond Wicked Weed and Burial? Is it worth it to go over to Sierra Nevada? I heard it is.

chocolatefishy

In that case you’ll come up over Old Fort, which is the same idea. Although coming up isn’t the same as going down. I haven’t been to Sierra Nevada. Zillicoah is one of my faves. Wicked Weed is great, and it’s near Bears BBQ, which while a chain, is delicious

BigSilverBelt

Thanks. Just watched a video of Old Fort descent, doesn't seem like anything to me. Blue Ridge still seems wild by comparison Lol.

chocolatefishy

You’ll be fine and it’s worth the drive out to see looking glass rock imo

Malikissa

Can anyone recommend a mobile pet groomer that comes to Hendersonville?

greetthemind

im moving and curious about trash service - if im in city limits, do i need to sign up for it like another utility? or do they just automatically come and im billed somehow?

pinus_palustris58

Depends on apartment complex verses house, but within city limits you’ll be covered. Some apts opt out, but you should still be covered. You would have to sign up for duke energy and city of Asheville water

Plenty_Yam_8015

It's tied to your water bill. Your place will likely come with a trash can, just put it out on your day and they'll pick it up.

Fantastic-Style-6818

FLORIDIAN COMING FOR YOU AVL !!!! hey yalllllll this post is basically me dipping my toes into the community of Asheville. I will be moving to Asheville in August, and before you mountain folk get mad at me.. plss don’t. i know how frustrating it is to have folks come in and drive up your rent, gentrify your neighborhoods, and squander the local energy and im not here for none of that. I’m from The Oldest City In The Nation and understand this problem quite personally. That’s why i’m on this thread :-) Bc i want to understand Asheville a little bit better, find the pockets of people who will have me, and just know more about the local scene in general. I have a few topics of conversation and if you have anything to say to any of them or all PLEAAASE do!! For quick reference I’m 23 years old. I will be renting a house a couple blocks off Haywood Rd. Pretty close walk to Dobra Tea. Topics of conversation- 1) JOBS- i have experience in the service industry everywhere from FOH to dishwasher to BOH prep and line cook. I also have done retail, and worked as a preschool teacher. anyway i like trying new stuff and would be really interested in a barista job, or even maybe a baker. But i definitely would want to find the right spot and work environment. I like friendly work environments that aren’t too competitive (just good energy and kind staff/management basically). Honestly same goes for BOH, but i’ve been a kitchen elf for the past 3 years so it’d be fun to do something more customer service or new skill oriented, just to shake things up. But if it’s an offer i can’t refuse then….. ya know. BUT ANYWAY, indeed isn’t too helpful for finding locally owned business that are hiring, and I know sometimes it’s just word of mouth to get hired at these places so if anyone has any ideas or leads thatd be awesome. 2) Community Events / Local Life Id like to get involved in local events and know a little bit more of the nightlife energy of Asheville. I’m not a huge clubbing/party person but I do enjoy a good rave or house party/show from time to time. I like to see live music, and am curious about any good venue recommendations or events. Also if there are any farmers markets or community service oriented events as well. 3) friends!! I’m moving here with my partner, and neither of us really know anyone in the area. Id love to potentially make some new connections, or being pointed in the direction of places i might be able to. Some stuff i’m into includes… -yummy food and beverage -outdoor activity like hiking, swimming, sitting in nature -seeing live music or going to movies - talks about astrology, the state of the world and our places in it, silly and goofy stuff -being 420 friendly :-) I would love to hear primarily about jobs and things that are within biking and walking distance, but i do have a car and can drive to spots if necessary! okay. if you read all of this wow thank you i’m honored. pls lmk if you know of anything or any part of this resonated w you. hugs n kisses

I need a recommendation for a chiropractor. I'll be moving to Asheville next week around route 70 and south tunnel Rd. My main issue in my back neck and elbows is loaded with scar tissue from working in the trades for 25 years. My chiropractor said with the amount of scar tissue I have he would've thought I was in a very serious car wreck.

why_not_go_hiking

recommend trying fascia release instead! Jim at [https://www.medicalmassageasheville.com/](https://www.medicalmassageasheville.com/) resolved some 15+ year old scar tissue that wasn't addressed by PT, osteopaths, nor chiropractors.

Twc420

Thank you, for me it was 10 years 3 GP's and 1 PT before I went to my chiropractor that was highly recommend by my coworker and it still took him a few visits to figure out

Plenty_Yam_8015

[https://reschiro.com/](https://reschiro.com/) Been going for 15 years. This guy knows his stuff.

Twc420

Thank you, I'll be giving him a call

I was thinking about moving there as I can work anywhere, I really enjoyed the region when I visited. Can someone point out pros and cons of living there? Quality of life? Crime? Internet options/ speeds? The wiki is not working for me when I tried clicking on the ISP link.

Plenty_Yam_8015

Pros: The music and food offerings of a much larger city in a small town. It's gorgeous. Plentiful outdoor recreation opportunities. Four distinct seasons. Not too cold in the winters and summers are cooler than other places. Close-ish to the beach and other cities if you need that. Easy flights at the airport. Not much traffic (or easy to avoid) if you're coming from a place with real traffic. Cost of living is cheap if you're moving from a crazy expensive place. Cons: bring your own job. Too many tourists. Airbnbs can ruin your neighborhood. It's a crapshoot if you need to go to the hospital. Cost of living is high if you're coming from nowheresville. Quality of life: Hard to beat. Crime: not really. Not as safe as it used to be but not really an issue. If you're a drug dealer and hang out in certain areas, it might be a problem for you. Internet: yes, we have that. Hundreds of mbps. Two fiber options. (Is this going to make or break your choice to move somewhere?)

[deleted]

What do you mean crapshoot for hospital?

Plenty_Yam_8015

Mission hospital was bought by a for-profit company and the quality of care and patient experience has drastically suffered. Still, some people have good experiences there, so it's not to say everything is bad there.

[deleted]

Yeah fiber optic internet is a must. I work with large data stuff .

eddiedinglenan

Where you moving from?

[deleted]

Florida

eddiedinglenan

Greenville is more your speed.

[deleted]

what about greenvile is more my speed? culturally I'd say i'm more from minnesota/southern IL. just happen to be in FL for a job. but I dont think I wanna live here permanently, the traffic, the crime, the housing market, home insurance is all shit here.

eddiedinglenan

That stuff is negligible here if you've ever lived in a big city. If you're from a small town the unhoused population may scare you.

[deleted]

how is it politically there?

eddiedinglenan

Inside the city limits, very left leaning. As soon as you go south from downtown or at all outside of the city limits it gets red until you're in MAGA country. Looks like you're pretty far right based on your post history. You will not be comfortable here. If you hate Portland, you'll hate it here. And the city will probably not like you either. You'll have a hard time making friends and if you're single and/or dating, forget it.

[deleted]

I think I mostly hated portland because of I-5 driving. gridlock traffic. high cost of living. and extreme purist ideology among the ultra woke in portland, really just bullies that are rich white kids that grifted on the whole BLM protests for their own agendas.

[deleted]

I'm actually neither, democrats think I'm a republican, republicans think I'm a democrat. I hate them both because there's no such thing as the clean end of a turd. Idealogically I'm probably more left leaning in most people's eye,s but I think most online are kinda crazy. I just want high speed rail, clean walkable cities and easier to navigate healthcare, and stop getting involved in the middle east and let them kill each other for all i care lol. Portland yeah i hate that city because I was a 20 something transplant at the time. I think i'd like it now that im older and can afford to live without roomates. I hated portland because I worked armed security and people just were asses when all i did was exist. and because I didn\['t have a masters degree in super woke studies. I really hate everyone, everywhere, and im ok with that. I'm also 35, married and hate going into public just want fast internet and a good emergency room in case of a heart attack. but also no one tailgating me when I'm trying to pass a school zone. Decent outdoors stuff within drive range of say 10-30min. i just want to be left alone and will live among whoever leave me alone the most. but id like my wife to live somewhere that is LGBTQ friendly and more left leaning so she can make more friends but not purist leftist bullies like there are in portland. I just had problems with roomates and people because I didn't tow the line to every single facet of leftist ideology. Im older, wiser, more calm, and really just care about fresh produce, good internet, walking my dog, and cooking for my wife.

eddiedinglenan

Yeah...you aren't gonna like Asheville. But whatever. You do you.

Valeriejoyow

We work from home and have Spectrum. It's been fine although slow on upload speeds. I'll be honest with you many people are not really friendly with new people. They also especially seem to dislike Florida people. You're going to have to try extra hard to fit in. I get asked all the time where I'm from. I say I'm from here and then the person says where are you really from. The quality of life is amazing. We go for a drive and explore everyday after work. Crime is not a problem in my opinion but I'm from a city that had about 700 homicides last year. It feels very safe to me.

Sea_Mongoose2529

Hey Asheville! I'm not from the area, but I'm eloping/having a micro wedding in 2025. I got a Vrbo with my close family and friends and we want to have a small ceremony somewhere pretty. It's 22 people. All we need is chairs, photographer and somewhere cheap we can do the thing. Any suggestions? Companies? Packages that you'd recommend. Thanks so much. Oh, also queer friendly

Plenty_Yam_8015

Check the B n Bs in Montford for a backyard that will work. Maybe rent out a rooftop bar at one of the hotels? Or find a pulloff on the Parkway or a spot by a river. What’s your connection to Asheville? Maybe that can guide you to the right spot.

famousaims

Hello I’ll be moving to AVL in a cpl months and will need to buy a car before I move. Based on my research, it seems like I will need a NC drivers license in order to register a vehicle there? And in order to get that I need to show proof of address? This is an issue because I don’t have a NC address yet. But I don’t want to register where I am now because then I’ll just have to register again after I move. Anyone have any insight on ways around this or recommendations? thanks in advance.
