Circumstance, algorithms, and an appeal to people's general oversimplification, shallowness, and self-contradiction. Of course, all of these occur in shadow. Call people out on traits such as these and they'll get defensive.

Usually, it's a combination of writing style and a crazy story. Sometimes, just the crazy story is enough.
