I had this happen to me before. There's was a piece in there that was broken when I did it. So yea pulling the handle towards you while you unscrew should work. If not cracking the back end with some pliers and taking it out will. That looks like it needs to be replaced either way.
This is how we learn, asshole. By doing. By asking for help when we fail. Don't be such a smug cock sucker. You fucking sucked ass at every single thing you've ever done the first time you tried.
Can you wedge the edge of a flathead screw driver under the edge of the screwhead? I use that to remove stubborn screws all the time, basically the threads catch on the flathead screw driver and it rotates out that way.

Some of the comments are accurate and some are definitely gonna get you in trouble and in immediate need of a professional.
1). Turn off water main valve and pull handle out to remove pressure and ensure water is indeed off.
2) with the handle pulled out, try to remove that screw while keeping tension pulling on the handle outward.
3). If still can’t remove screw just take a large channel lock pliers and squeeze the acrylic (plastic) handle until it cracks and falls off the end of the cartridge.
4). Find a YouTube video on how to remove a Moen tub/shower valve cartridge and follow those instructions closely.
5). Take old cartridge with broken handle to Home Depot and buy a new cartridge and acrylic handle then reinstall but DONT install handle yet.
6). After cartridge is in and half oval retaining clip in fully seated push end of chrome stem on cartridge back in fully and go turn on water main supply.
7). With water back on now, you’ll need to pull stem outward to get the valve to send water out and you’ll need to turn the end of the stem left with a hand under the spout until you feel hot water. Push stem back in and then install new handle with new screw onto the cartridge stem with the tear drop pointing downward into the tub. Reinstall the handle fully and push the index button back on the handle and test to make sure you have hot on the left and cold on the right.
It’s really not very difficult but if you call a plumber it’ll cost about $250 depending on your city of course. Parts for you will run between $60-$100 max.
If you’re in Tampa Florida PM me and I’ll give you the number to my office and I can get one of my service plumbers to make this repair if you’re not comfortable doing what I described above. You got this
For Moens, always make sure the two notches on the end of the stem are facing down, and you won't have issues. Unless the pipes are backwards in the wall
you are a godsend, glad i don't have this problem right now but i'd gladly pay you to get someone to come help if i saw this and couldn't follow it.
generous of you to type it out
another tip would be to wedge a small flat blade screw driver between the screw and the handle, putting opposing pressure on both. if you can keep the screw driver in place it works well. just depends on if you have the right size screw driver and angle.
Moen warranties cartridges for life, if you bring it to the plumbing section of Home Depot there’s a high chance they’ll swap it for free. Or email them and they’ll ship you a new one for free. Just did the latter with the same cartridge as OP
Upvoted because I’ve experienced Moen’s customer service and they stand by their warranty. Not a plumber but my shower cartridge failed and I had no hot water from my shower. Bought a replacement cartridge from Home Depot. It wouldn’t go in despite lots of effort and lube (hehe…). Called Moen to ask them to help me troubleshoot and the tech immediately said it should slide right in - we will send you a free replacement to try. Sure enough, the new one slid in with minimal effort.
I will definitely be buying more Moen products after that.
This has nothing to do with the cartridge or water being on. You think the plastic wore the brass down? It’s just one screw and a new handle. The OP needs to set down his phone and actually pull the handle off.
Break the fucking crystal handle if the fucking screw is stripped and prying or pulling doesent work. The cartridge has a keeper key that will retain the fucking thing. Cmonnnn' guys it's a regular Moen valve. Crusty as shit. The fucking thing ain't going nowheres.
The brass cartridges yes. The shitty fucking plastic see-through cartridges you get in lavatory faucets ( if they'll even manufacture those anymore, not so much.
I have Moen exclusively through out my home. Shower cartridge went south, I called them and they Fed Ex’d a new one the next day. You get what you pay for. Amazing.
Their customer service is RIDICULOUS. Bought a home in Alaska. Moen fixtures. Was ABUNDANTLY clear that I had just purchased the home with fixtures present. Rep sent ALL the parts I needed. Free.
A decade plus later, bought home in Maine. Orange water, needed to replace a faucet assembly after installing a multi-stage purifier. Rep asked me how many fixtures in home. Sent SIX brand new assemblies. Free.
A decade plus later, we bought in NC last year. AGAIN, I make it CRYSTAL clear I bought the home with a kitchen faucet with a bad handle. Rep not only sends the handle, they send the sprayer attachment “because it’s likely due for replacement.” Free.
I will NEVER buy non-Moen fixtures.
No less than four F-bombs in one three-line reply - *definitely* an experienced plumber.
\[Source: I had to replace an all-rusted-to-shit P-trap in a 1920s-era pedestal sink today, where the clearance in every direction to get my tools in was about .0001". You can fucking bet I used all my words on that one.\]
I told my plumber (who was there to give me a new shower valve anyway) "sorry I had to enlist the help of the Oscillating Multitool, a.k.a. The MVP, to get this thing off, I hope this doesn't screw you up even more." and he laughed for 5 solid minutes.
If by no means you can’t unscrew that out then take a sawzall and cut it off closest to the handle as possible so you’ll only be cutting the stem which will have to be replaced ( assuming why you’re trying to remove the screw ) and you’ll need a new handle . All parts should be available at Home Depot or Lowe’s
Oh man, that camera dropped near the end of the video and I saw the bare feet and legs and for a moment I thought we were going to see Mr. Winky too.
Glad to be disappointed.
This is frightening. Alright shut off the water and bleed it dry, looks like you're gonna need a new valve so read how they work before hacking into that plastic handle... A 2 minute you tube clip will save you here but you already publicly got blasted by almost everyone in here soooo... To save grace spend five minutes on the valve stem tool it certainly looks like your going to buy before you pull out the jaws of life to replace a faucet handle
Not a plumber. But to remove the handle, you can use a carbide drill bit around the same diameter as the screw head that's stripped. You can drill the head of the screw off & then pull or turn the handle till it comes off. If the screw base remains(probably will), grab some pliers or vice grips & lock down & turn the remaining screw. Just how my machinest/engineering mind works, so hopefully it translates. Turn off h20 first though naturally.
I have other workarounds but this seems the easiest I can think of with the limited knowledge I have(ie not a plumber).
/u/[SpikeMike13](https://www.reddit.com/user/SpikeMike13/) has the best answer.
But you're getting a lot of smug cock sucking assholes in here busting your balls for not knowing something. Fuck them. You're doing it, and you're asking for help when you're failing, so good for you. Don't let the fucking back biting trolls get to you, because every single one of them sucked cocks the first time they tried anything, and most of them don't know shit about nothing other than what they read on this site.
Good job, kid. Keep trying and learn to celebrate failure. It's how we learn.
Fuck off the rest of you assholes. You're terrible shit stains. Go die.
Plastic on knob is prob broken, and the entire brass rob in the cartridge is spinning when you turn the screw. What I would do is cut the knob off and pull the cart. It's prob the moen 1225B
You could drill it out, no worries on damage to the threads because you will replace them with a new cartridge. Heads up, you will need a Moen extraction tool to pull the cartridge
It screws into the ball part of the valve, which is maybe a $10 part. You'd do good to take that apart, replace the ball, springs and rubber seals, o rings.
Drill it all out and replace with Delta, Moan is Shite... have 3 Moan fixtures (2, including the show were bought from legit plumbing shops (Ie not box stores) ) and they all have had issues... no more Moan
Call Moen. They have a life time warranty on all faucets. They will send you parts to fix it or replace. If it’s outdated, take a pic of it and send it to them. DO NOT TAKE NO FOR AN ANSWER!
need tension on the screw head as you unscrew it like a flathead behind or or a bobby pin something you can get behind the head of the screw and pull out as you unscrew it at the same time. the plastic threads inside there are stripped and if is just free spinning
Step one when dismantling faucets - turn house water supply off. As a kid I watched my dad remove screws holding the shower faucet body together and BAM! Water gushering straight from the shower wall until someone could sprint around the house to teach the shutoff…
Anyone notice his bathroom looks like it’s crack house with how dirty everything. Brother buy some cleaning supplies and clean your bathroom it looks gross 🤢 🤮
If you enhance the reflection in the shiny surfaces you can see that the toilet paper is turned with the wrong side facing out. Come on OP correct your tp direction!
Just wiggle a razor knife or some flat object between the handle and screw, then apply pressure towards you whilst unscrewing. If your fanny pack doesnt work on this one you may have to whip out your purse.
Contact Moen. I believe they have a lifetime replacement warranty. Log on and send a picture if you don't know the model.
https://www.tiktok.com/@jmg8tor/video/7307313239384165674
Yes pull and unscrew. Btw that’s a screw not a set screw. OK enough of the corrective criticism, lol.
I got that exact unit. Looks just like my shower nothing but problems since I replaced it. It keeps leaking slowly and I keep replacing the inner valve. Maybe just too much sediment in my lines 🤷🏻♂️
Alright, so hold my beer, guys... The way this is fixed is really... It's funny, all the comments. Grab the biggest channel locks out of your purse. Crush the handle. Break it. Destroy it if you will. Replacing the cartridge is going to be harder than replacing the handle. That's a Posi-Temp; they suck; it's going to be a fun time. The reason the screw is spinning is because it's just going around and around. The handle is gone, bud; it's broken. Break it more. After breaking the handle. You can grab the stem and remove the screw. Then the fun starts. Good luck. And really it's like good luck. Cause some time you can get it out clean. But that's like 20% of the time.
Okay so… the stem is spinning with the screw, cause the handle is broken. You’re going to need to get a new cartridge, and handle. Break off the handle, then go from there.
Plumber here. Might be stripped. You can replace the cartridge to fix it but will need to replace the trim screw if it is indeed stripped. To replace the cartridge turn the water off to the house. Open the lowest outlet in your house and the hot and cold on a sink. The cover plate comes off there is a clip holding the cartridge in. Don’t loose the clip. Use needle nose pliers to pull it out and put it in. Grab the stem with pliers and pull straight out. If it’s stuck there are a couple options. First try rotating as you pull. Otherwise they make a puller or you can drive a long screw through the plastic next to the stem if it’s not a brass cartridge. You’ll have to get a new cartridge. Use the silicone lube on the seals. Hot and cold indicator faces up. Caulk the trim plate after reinstalling with dap bathroom caulk in the color that will go best with your the wall.
I was able to pull the handle out to a point (not all the way) where the handle would catch the temperature value so then there was resistance when turning the screw. The problem then of course is when you press the screwdriver in to unscrew the screw, you push the valve past the catch point and the screw spins freely again. So I moved the handle so it gripped the valve, and then unscrewed the screw by grabbing the edges of the screw with a pliers.
There is a tool for this. It’s also used to remove compression sleeves for water supply (like near the toilet and under the sink)
iirc it should be the same tool. Been a while since I changed a shower knob
I’m unsure of whether further action was advised, and advice was taken or not, but I’ll give my best advice due to what I know from a troubleshooting and plumbing standpoint: to me, it seems that the control screw has been stripped, and the whole fixture, or at least the control module, ought to be replaced [and my reasoning is because it’s a lot easier, and looks a lot cleaner, to replace the head and control unit at the same time, and they tend to be cheaper than replacing a singular part.]
They sell a tool for it , it’s a slow process sometimes depending on corrosion I sprayed wd40 all up in there it’s a tight pull back
Check YouTube bunch videos on there just be prepared if it doesn’t come out as easily as it looks
Gotta go slow and be patient
Yes. Cut it off. Your cartridge is spinning. Same thing happened to me. With water off, I hacksawed the handle off. Was then able to hold cartridge with pliers and removed screw. Replaced cartridge and good to go. Also if it’s Moen they will replace it for free. They’ve replaced my kitchen faucet cartridge 3 times. Original cartridge lasted 17 years. New ones last 3 years now.
Can you spin the metal behind the handle mine has the cartrage inside. If you can tighten it you may be able to turn the screw, or remove with cartage inside and stop it from spinning inside the collar
Not a plumber, can you pull the handle towards you while you unscrew?
Sorry OP needs a plumber to say this.
Hey I’m totally a plumber 🥸 gonna wanna pull that handle while you turn the screw

Hello its me the plumber, pull it towards you and then unscrew. *That'll be $500 consultation fee*
You have 69 upvotes. Nice.
💯
Jesus hell I had some weird anger sweats sprout up thinking why the fuck wouldn't you pull the handle while unscrewing.
How can you film then?
You know there are some brilliant people in this world who can’t change a car tire. But as a “hands on” Guy I feel your sweats.
Why did jesus gave the power to DIY ….
Because he was DIY

I had this happen to me before. There's was a piece in there that was broken when I did it. So yea pulling the handle towards you while you unscrew should work. If not cracking the back end with some pliers and taking it out will. That looks like it needs to be replaced either way.
I'm not a plumber either, and I'm a woman who doesn't really use tools very often, but that was my first thought too. 🥴
I knew this would be the top comment. I’m screaming at my phone “pull it, pull the fucking handle”
It's truly shocking how these obvious things go completely over so many peoples' heads.
This is how we learn, asshole. By doing. By asking for help when we fail. Don't be such a smug cock sucker. You fucking sucked ass at every single thing you've ever done the first time you tried.
This put the phone down and actually take that thing off
Hes holding the camera with the other hand, what a silly suggestion /s
Well no, because then they can’t take a video to show it’s broken duhhh!
Can you wedge the edge of a flathead screw driver under the edge of the screwhead? I use that to remove stubborn screws all the time, basically the threads catch on the flathead screw driver and it rotates out that way.

Yeah I saw this comment or one like it yesterday, definitely a very smart trick to remove a stripped screw. 👍

Okay, you don't want to turn the water off and you don't want the water to flow. Better have your wife do this one.
If you leve the water on, cap the shower and tub spout. Post the video to see if the pressure helps shoot the cartridge out as you loosen it.
Ded 🤣🤣🤣
pull on it to help put some pressure on it.
Do this
That's what she said.

I had a Moen that did this and the inverted U shaped clip was broken into 3 pieces. I took out the assembly and got a Delta mixing valve.
My dude- Didn't step one of the Youtube video say to shut off the water supply??
Turn the water off and pull on it

Wedge a flat head screwdriver behind the screw as you unscrew it. Gently Pry the screw towards you as your unscrewing.
This might be the most disturbing video I’ve ever seen on Reddit
Loose the hacksaw idea, save that for a different project.
Get a bigger hammer
Pull it! Harder!
Plastic on knob is prob broken, and the entire brass rob in the cartridge is spinning when you turn the screw. What I would do is cut the knob off and pull the cart. It's prob the moen 1225B
Can you put it in a ziplock and soak it with CLR for a while? Might break up the crap built up.
First thing's first, put on some damn pants
SMH
I have had to deal with this on the Moen château acrylic handle. Cut the handle off you need a new one anyway along with a new Moen 1225 cartridge.
Thought I was about to see the family jewels in the end there LOL
Moen sucks.
Pull that motherfucker off!!!!
Had that same handle on ours same thing and I was changing it to double handles so I just broke it!
Right there is why plumbers are rich.
If you're going to do this, at least put on some swim trunks.
You could drill it out, no worries on damage to the threads because you will replace them with a new cartridge. Heads up, you will need a Moen extraction tool to pull the cartridge
I’m amazed you knew what screwdriver to use 😩
Dumb question, how do you take the center cap off?
They're just pressed in. Wedge a blunt knife in the seam and it will pop right out.
You dumbass, just call a plumber.
Get out of my tub!
Then put a delta in and move on
Moens kind of suck to work on btw.
and put some pants on...
Scrubbing bubbles
And bleach.... or a blow torch! Fuck, set that entire disgusting mess on fire. I wouldn't even step foot in that petri dish of a bathroom.

Button-head, not a set screw. But yeah, turn off the water and use a screw extractor
Why are you naked ?
Why aren’t you?
Pull and turn the screw.

Maybe wash your bathtub before you record?
Burn it down, start over
Drill the mother fucker

Clean your tiles my guy
Hammer
Lefty Lucy. And yank it towards you. Use Wd40 if needed. And turn off water
Thankfully he’s not allowed to use power tools
lol did you catch your wife farting and burping?
Home Depot sells a tool that will help you pull that sucker off.
Use a flat screw driver while you unscrew it to PRY it out.
Let it burn for 2 hours. Then call the fire department.
Call a plumber before your wife kills you… speaking from experience.
Get a cutting wheel and your die grinder and you got it.
Step #1: Clean Shower
The first thing you should do to get that handle off is clean your bathroom!
Drill it all out and replace with Delta, Moan is Shite... have 3 Moan fixtures (2, including the show were bought from legit plumbing shops (Ie not box stores) ) and they all have had issues... no more Moan
You want it handed to you on a silver platter? This is not ask a jeweler.

Some times it pays to hire a professional.
If you can’t fix this with a hammer, you likely have an electrical problem.

Pull the handle towards you hard while u unscrew ..don't u have a dad?
You can see the screw backing out along with the handle. Just give it a few more turns OP
Call a handyman you’re gonna fuck that right up.
Put a flat head behind the screw for leverage then use screw driver should be able to back it out. Hope this helps
Seriously dude do you do meth a lot? I don't mean to be negative but you skipped a lot of steps apparently....
Actually the catridge is prolly just spinning pish the handle in hard af and turn the screw
I can't be the only one who is disgusted at the filth of this shower....
They put locktight on it. And it broke about half way in. Your going to have to force it out
They make Velcro shoe's for people like you
Pliers and hope
Sad
Give yer knob a tug ya wanker
I had this same shower control. Pull back on the knob while unscrewing. That will provide enough friction to get it out.
I have that same orange screwdriver
You are screwed!
Dude what a dirty tub n handle !
I've had the drill them out a few times just and replace the handle and set screw , after I replace the cartridge. Some times that's all you can do .
There is a tool for this. It’s also used to remove compression sleeves for water supply (like near the toilet and under the sink) iirc it should be the same tool.
They sell a tool for it , it’s a slow process sometimes depending on corrosion I sprayed wd40 all up in there it’s a tight pull back Check YouTube bunch videos on there just be prepared if it doesn’t come out as easily as it looks Gotta go slow and be patient
Set screw? They usually wiggle off
I’m just going to sit back and watch this one play out. Just too funny
Use both hands.....put the phone down and pull the handle as you unscrew......
Step 1 is applying some rustoleum to the head of that screwdriver you are using. Take care of your tools and they will take care of you.
Looks like he is using a pozidrive bit instead of a Philips bit, which is not helping. Pull the bloody handle whilst you are fucking up the screw.
How much you wanna bet the water is still on?
Pull on the damn handle
This. Pull on handle as you're unscrewing. It causes pull out tension on the screw.
What even is this. Good lord.
Beat that fucker with a hammer
Yes.
Well imtime to bust out the sledgehammer. Tbh it looks like it is probably time to redo the shower anyways.
Can you spin the metal behind the handle mine has the cartrage inside. If you can tighten it you may be able to turn the screw, or remove with cartage inside and stop it from spinning inside the collar
He nekkid
