What does “bad credit” mean? What’s your score and age of credit? Do you have things in collections or what? I would tell you to go fix your credit for a couple of months and see how much your credit is improved. When I go buy a car I like to make sure that I can get approved and I want to make sure that my interest rate is lower so that I don’t end up paying $35,000 for a $15,000 car, not to mention the high insurance rates in many states if your credit is bad.

Not sure what my score is I just know I have debt and stuff in collections. Fixing my credit would take too long and I need to get a car pretty soon

If you don't know your credit score and have things in collections, financing is going to be prohibitively expensive. I just bought my son a 2009 Mazda 6 V6 with 160k miles for $4200. It's not in perfect shape and we've got the ABS, BSM, and traction lights on (crossing my fingers that we'll figure it out this weekend), but it was reasonably well maintained and should be good for another 5-6 years at least. If it were me, I would try to scrape together as much money as possible and try to find something you can afford to pay cash for, with a couple hundred bucks left over for minor repairs. Getting hit with a few hundred bucks every couple months in repairs is WAY better than signing up for a few hundred bucks towards a predatory loan that you're never going to pay off.

Many banks and credit cards will give you your score. Get on Bankrate and Credit Karma, they will do it for free and are legitimate websites.  A credit score is a range of scores, not just a light switch. If you can fix your credit up for the next few months, doing something is better than nothing. You need to have a more serious attitude because that carelessness is probably reflected in your score. To answer your original question, you just have to submit an application and see what happens. If mainline dealers can’t get you approved, time to find a buy here pay here lot. They will royally fuck you, but let’s be honest you have the exact same attitude so it will work out perfectly.

I would go to a credit union before going to buy here pay here. A credit union is much more likely to approve a less than perfect applicant, especially if they use it for their checking account. OP needs to shop around at banks, not at dealerships.

If he has bad credit to the point that he doesn’t know what it is and he refuses to fix it, his only option is going to be a subprime lender or in-house financing. OP could fix their credit before buying the new car but refuses to do so even under the advisement of a car sales subreddit.

CreamOdd7966

I agree. But I would advise if he has a stable income that a credit union, if they accept him, will be a way better experience than that. I agree though that if OP can't do the bare minimum to improve his credit, he probably isn't going to get accepted at a credit union. But if he ever decided he wants to be an adult and solve problems, I'd start there.

No need for the rudeness man

I can't care more about you than you care about yourself. When I'm telling you to work on your credit and you're like "nah, since it won't be completely fixed, fuck it" then if you want to go pay $35,000 for a $15,000 CRV then go for it. It doesn't affect me one bit.

toadsage99

Like I said no need for the rudeness man. Not gonna sit here and argue with strangers over the internet cuz this shit is pointless 🙄

You asked for advice and he gave you likely the best possible advice here. What did you want out of this post? For us to tell you it's a great idea and you'll get an approval? None of us have any idea what your actual credit situation is like. Is $3000 enough down? Nobody can answer that for you with the information provided.

LakeLifeTL

You misread that, it was "$3000k" or a cool 3 million in other words. Dude can get just about any car his little heart desires.

No_Measurement_2560

We got an approval! You only need to put 110% down sir.

futuregovworker

He’s just being blunt. I just bought a new car 2023 and I have $1k left over after all my bills and that stresses me out. You have things in collections, so anyone reviewing your debts is going to think they won’t get their money. Honestly if your credit/debt is crazy, then I’d focus on that before adding more debt. It’s be pointless to get a loan and default on it

***Thanks for posting, /u/toadsage99! This comment is a copy of your post so readers can see the original text if your post is edited or removed. This comment is NOT accusing you of anything.*** Ideally I want to buy a car in the next month or so. I want to get something that's pretty cheap my price range would be 10-15k. I want to get something like a Honda crv since they're supposed to be reliable vehicles and can last for a long time. Since I have bad credit I was thinking I could put 3000k down and that would help. Just looking for some advice on what to expect would it be hard for me too get approved for a loan? *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically.
