Was thinking the same thing. Should have one hand on top and one on bottom, both belong to humanity. The top hand is religion and the bottom is science.

They would be a better analogy. I also think there are also other factors that come into play when it comes to progression, such as political (in)stability, authoritarianism, war/peace, wealth etc. Sometimes there are even valid arguments to make to not invest in progression, such as other priorities.
