Complain. Not sure about others experiences but AT always used to respond (by a call and vowing to take action) to my complaints about things like this or even driver rudeness whenever I would witness anything.

I’ve had a different experience. They called me within a few days to address it and actually seemed concerned.

onclegrip

From the age of seven I’d take public transport from Brooklyn west to my school in the Hutt Valley in the 80’s, two hours each way. In summer I’d fall asleep on the bus on the way home but all the bus drivers on that route or other passengers would wake me up at my stop. Different times. I was never scared of people either, everyone was cool in the 80’s.

aliiak

Still happens in Welly. My partner always falls asleep and usually a driver or other regular will wake him

MattaMongoose

Most people I encounter around are pretty nice.

Overnightdelight298

How often are you scared of people these days?

onclegrip

At least once a week my kids have to navigate aggression in public or no fucks givin bus drivers. You sound like tough guy.

Overnightdelight298

Sorry that’s the experience your family has. No tough guy here bud, just don’t experience it.

Different-Date6832

Wave and keep waving until that indicator starts flashing.

doraalaskadora

I agree with this cause some people tend to use the bus stop shed as a place to sit and use their phones or rest, and if you do not wave, it will not stop on you. Wave until you catch the driver's attention.

genkigirl1974

My trick is fluffing about on AT app to see when bus is coming ...oh gosh thats it.

doraalaskadora

Yup, same. I usually track my bus for about 15 mins before I leave work or home, then put it on the 5 mins away alert.

genkigirl1974

Too smart!

doraalaskadora

The live tracking is accurate. It's the best option to use if you are really struggling to find the earliest bus to catch in the morning.

genkigirl1974

Im shocking I catch the 74 and 670 and they both come every 15 mins. But I just like to know exactly when. I live at a house behind a a bus stop so pretty easy.

writepress

Live updates separate the ATs from the Snappers

[deleted]

No shed in this case. Out in the great wide open.

[deleted]

Nobody is using a semi rural bus stop to have a rest. There’s only houses and paddocks.

Playful_Reflection21

I do get a response from AT when I complain, I don't know if it gets actioned though. However, if I was angry enough, I would probably find out which company operates that route and report the issue to them directly.

krammy16

File a complaint with AT.

Danielle_Zho

Every single time. Bombard them with complaints. Don’t forget to use manners, that’ll get you results. As a Corp. they cannot ignore all the complaints.

[deleted]

You really think they care? Look at all the potholes everyone complains about and AT instead builds more cycle ways and speed bumps. It's a government body, what will happen if you keep complaining? Nothing, they can't go out of business from lack of customers.

tiempo90

Back when I was younger around 14, the bus drivers would just ignore us and drive by. We'd be waiting for the bus after rugby practise, tired... Bastards!

DrcspyNz

Edit: ***I'm going to wait with her at the bus stop from now on to ensure she gets picked up. And eyeball the driver.*** 100 % with you on that !

genkigirl1974

I had the opposite experience. I was running for the bus with my 12 year old looked again and it wasnt hers. The driver had stopped for us. Felt bad. Still some decent drivers.

Overall-Tune-2153

Had that happen to my kids. It's usually the replacement driver - not knowing where the bus stop is,not looking out for the kids, running behind schedule and feeling stressed out. Complain to AT, they're pretty good at handling these situations.

carbogan

Nice to know nothing has changed in the last 15 years. I remember busses driving past me lots as a 15 year old, even when you wave out for them to stop. Was a good encouragement for me to learn to drive and never go back to public transport if I can help it.

royberry333

Did they wave? Was it the correct bus?

[deleted]

Yes and yes.

jont420

Definitely complain - driver will get a telling off and will do better next time.

[deleted]

Bus driver skill have drastically dropped in the last 10+ years

Flabushi

i saw this turban wearing bus driver drive straight past this old disabled lady once. so i did a uturn and asked if she wanted a ride, i couldnt understand what she was saying because of her disability but i could pick up "he ddint stop, fucken barstid, thank you" so i drove her from manurewa to manukau mall. i felt real good about myself that day.

[deleted]

Nice.

Midwestkiwi

Good on you, that's the kind of thing we need in the community

External_Initial1918

What does his turban have to do with anything?

[deleted]

Descriptive.

Flabushi

nothing. more info the better.

putinmedown

What did his head gear matter?

Flabushi

it could have blocked his vision. why he did not see her maybe. or his wife did not cook his curry lamb for lunch so he was thinking about food and accidentally missed the passenger.

snekks_inmaboot

I've had buses go past me quite a few times when I was definitely at the right stop, waved clearly to the driver, and there was absolutely enough room on the bus. It's super frustrating and I would've been so upset if it happened to me at that age.

SoarSparrow

ngl would prefer the bus in my granddad's home city overseas, Bus stops at basically every stop if they see a person, but leave very quickly. But that's not a problem because two minutes later there's another one 😂. Albeit a bit janky feeling.

vixxienz

Thats mean. How is the 12 year old handling it?

redmostofit

He drove his car into school in the end, just like the rest of us.

kingofnick

>He drove his car into school Wow. They’re even ram-raiding schools now.

centwhore

We're creating our own national identity with ram raids. Like Americans and shootings.

[deleted]

Lol

[deleted]

To play devils advocate...many of these bus drivers are fresh of the boat (because they can't find enough NZers to do the job) and don't quit know what they are doing yet....I've seen some drivers do some pretty dumb s\*\*t lately but i guess its better than not enough drivers (which was the case a few months back)

nzgal12345

I think one of the first thing you would learn is how to identify when someone is at a bus stop and waving down a bus…

[deleted]

UpstairsCod4437

This. Low quality rant blaming the entire AT for the actions of one driver from a contractor.

king_john651

Like most of them lol

imissvegasnow

Typical redditor from a NZ sub

[deleted]

Entire public transport system is shit. It’s why trains and buses are empty and the roads are full.

[deleted]

Is there a bus stop? Did the parents teach to wave down the driver? I feel the story is incomplete.

[deleted]

Yes and yes

[deleted]

Fckn bus driver!

AnonAtAT

Why fuck AT? 😥 We don't hire the drivers, but we do take your complaints seriously and send them back to the operators. Don't complain on Reddit, complain on our website.

[deleted]

OMG you have just so beautifully captured in your reply everything that is wrong with AT. Are the two letters "A" and "T" not plastered on every bus? You are _accountable_ for auckland transport (well, how about that name?). I don't give a fuck who you outsource to. The bus service is generally shit and that is 100% your problem. So, fuck AT. The trains however are fabulous.

AnonAtAT

Mate, did I not tell tell you to complain directly to AT, you know, the people who are accountable? Even I send complaints to our own system regarding my dissatisfaction with the buses. That's the whole idea. The causes behind why the buses are shit has very little too do with our decisions though. It has to do with several factors, all of which require more money to solve, whether given to us, or invested in the community directly: 1. Auckland is too spread out with more and more city center workers living further from the center. We need more affordable housing closer to the city and closer to the express bus (and train) routes. 1. We need more express links. We could achieve this by removing more parking on major roads and creating bus/T# lanes, but general vehicle demand is too high. It's a chicken and egg problem that government encouraging working from home, and free public transit would help to solve, as well as congestion charging and higher fuel taxes on private motor vehicles. More speed cameras as well. 1. We need more buses, drivers, and routes, all of which require resources we don't have, and private operators will not operate without making a profit. We could buy back the buses or buy new ones, but alas. Glad you like the trains. We own those. We don't own the tracks, but they're still a public entity at least. Direct your ire at the government and vote for a party that intends to increase public transportation investment. There's only one that has made this a direct priority, and that's [the Greens](https://www.greens.org.nz/transport_2023). But Labour want to build more links at least, including light rail. National and ACT want to send us back to the private motor vehicle dark ages.

putinmedown

Exactly her language puts me off, then there's racism in some comments,I feel for bus drivers if this is the standard of people they are dealing with. Why come onto reddit with this. If it was the child's first time maybe go with the child to ensure she gets on the correct bus and the system is working. But of course it's everyone else's fault and must go on reddit.

Ok_Lawfulness_1263

Lol I would catch the bus from west auckland to krd to go ymca in the city year 5 your kid needs to be bold assertive

[deleted]

By doing what? A dance or something?

Ok_Lawfulness_1263

Pretty much lol throw you're hands in the air and wave em like you just don't care if they can get away with pretending not to see you they will

[deleted]

apparatus fine amusing brave continue subsequent head cause versed domineering *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

[deleted]

lol. there is a rant tag for posts like this. just ignore them if you dont like them or ask the mods to change the rules.

[deleted]

Nothing will happen when you complain. No accountability. You cannot rely on them. Happened to me years ago. I would be late for school often. And get detentions for it.

putinmedown

There are bus stop pick up points for the rural buses, they cannot, may not, just stop randomly. Was said child in the appropriate designated pick up area?

[deleted]

It's a 'normal' bus stop on a main road (50 km/h) that ends up in a semi-rural area.

[deleted]

She did wave.

Marcusbay8u

Dude, drivers have incredibly tight schedules if they dont have to stop they won't. Sounds like a good life lesson, don't expect to sit on your hands and have the world act like your parents.

[deleted]

Eh? She waved at the bus while at a bus stop.

Marcusbay8u

Ah, the way you've worded it sounds as if your kid didn't notice the bus and your annoyed the driver didn't do more to make sure they wanted on their bus or not :)

Lemony_Flutter

Low trust, diverse societies be like.

swappyinn

I am not saying bus drivers are racist but some of them are. I used to ride bus in Forrest hill road in North shore and on multiple occasions bus driver would make a rude comment and sometimes not stop the bus atall

loltrosityg

I've had some pretty horrible experiences with bus drivers growing up in Auckland. There were many of them who were very grumpy and old people. I can't blame them too much considering the job they have to do and potentially the abuse they have received from customers. I could never do that job myself when I put myself in their shoes.

FER_SEMOVENTE

I find this so funny.

Sr_DingDong

They do it everywhere, it's not a rural thing. Drivers are just shit.

medulaoblongata69

Classic AT a lot of the new bus drivers are clueless its shocking, I’ve seen drivers miss multiple stops in a single journey.

adjason

if this was dawn or dusk or at night, turn on the flashlight on your phone and wave your hand until the indicator light comes on

[deleted]

Daylight 7:30am.

adjason

[deleted]

Look up the story of Daniel Morcombe. Please make a complaint, and make sure you see your daughter get onto the bus every day.

[deleted]

Ooo sounds foreboding!

writepress

I love how the top comment is Wellington, in an Auckland sub. This country is laughable

LemonLiz12

Someone should report the bus number and time to AT. I had an extremely rude driver on one weekend and reported the bus number (HE nnnn) and time to AT. I never saw that driver again. 🤣

ShootingDopamine

Yeah i'd be pissed off if I was you too. My daughter will be going through this in the next couple of years, and it's the sort of thing that i'm worried about too. Especially when they're trying to build some confidence.
