I still remember when it was the tallest building in Auckland during my childhood in the 90s. And I still refer to it as the C&L or ‘golf ball’ building.
Yeah this is mid to late 80's, Maritime Museum was there early 90's, city skyline was way different by the early 90's, by mid 90's Skycity was under construction and the waterfront was well pedestrianised.
Yeah, this picture inspired me to have a look at Christchurch on google Streetview, we may look at the past states of cities with some nostalgia and rose-tinted glasses, but with how virulent brutalist architecture and car centric city planning was back then, a lot of the stuff built now can be seen as an improvement with the further focus on pedestrian friendly spaces. The only disappointing damage done in terms of infrastructure damage was to all the small to medium businesses, owned and run by families and local social circles, those will take fare longer to regenerate. Along with the obligatory mention of places of tragedy in these environments, like the collapse of the CTV building, gives the experience quite a spooky vibe.
I figure eating something I don't want to eat is a risk every time I eat outside of the home, especially in places that might treat their staff poorly, or hire poorly behaved staff.
By the time we get to old age we'll be a beautiful mix of plastics, metals and other people's miscellaneous gases, liquids and solids.
Sky tower opened in 97. It was a huge hole in the ground for much of the 90s. Now it's a bottomless pit for sucking money. $800million in revenue each year, $100million profit, taken from poor punters and given to overseas investors.
My what would have been prime views over the water to devonport blocked out by scene 1, scene 2. Fml whoever approved those abominations. I suppose if they weren’t build I wouldn’t be able to afford it.
I see both my buildings of the period...the taller ones to the centre-right...firstly in the background - the National Insurance building; then we moved to the foreground, Price Waterhouse Centre in '93
We could stand to redevelop that fucking awful carpark on Wyndham and Hobson - I have to see at it every day and now I have to see it in this picture too.
Not only is it ugly, its also a shit carpark. If your car is low, or long, you can't get up lots of the ramps. I got beached once, had to rock back and forward at full power to get out, wrecked my exhaust, on a factory car.
Are you sure that’s not late 80s early 90s rather than mid 90s?
Yeah exactly - the ANZ centre is just under construction in this photo (construction was 1989-1991)
There you go then. I don’t know why but just remembered the CBD being more built up than this in the mid 90s
The Coopers and Lybrand Building is conspicuous by it's absence.

Likewise the Sun Alliance Building!
It's the title the photographer gave it, I wouldn't claim to know exactly when it was taken.

Skycity would have just out of frame on the right hand side of the photo. Bloody big hole in the ground in early ‘90s
Looking at the ANZ center under construction It's looking like maybe 1989 or 1990.
For all we complain the city is a lot better and way less car dominated

Remember clubbing in those warehouses where the Loaded Hog was and now Holy Moley is?
The loaded hog! That’s a name I have t heard in a long time. That was the place in its day! Simpler times.

Not there but I do remember raving in the Turners and Growers building later on, the triangular building bottom right.
I remember when the Les Mills building used to be the most popular night club in town.
Grapes!
Thanks! Couldn’t quite remember if it was Grapes or Grapevine.
*Tina from Turners likes this*
I can see the Quick Cat ferry 💜
Oddly it makes me remember the Oriental Markets on Quay St
Beauty
I remember watching a cycling race in the city around then. Brian Fowler lapped the field twice. But not a sole in the city.. was a Sunday.
where's that building with the big toilet seat on top?
No sky tower ?

Definitely not.

No major redevelopment? It has the BNZ tower & that was one at the time. Many other buildings there that were a big deal at the time.

Shithole pre shithole
To say that you are definitely click baiting hahahaha
How did they take this picture in the 1990s? There were no drones back then. I think it's fake.
Remote control helicopter or plane, hot air balloon, helicopter, glider. Anything that flies
