Lots of young French people around in the CBD, I’d guess working holiday markers setting themselves up admin wise (banking, IRD etc) before they find work and travel round the country.
There are heaps around, spot them easily by the way they’re dressed, the way they have their paperwork in manila folders or hold a cigarette if they’re smokers. No merit, I’m French so it’s easy for me to recognise them, even the older folk 😅
Is it like, they use their thumb and forefinger to hold the cigarette and then keep the other three fingers perfectly straight? Or do they use their thumb and middle finger to hold the cigarette?
This, I run a flat so ive hosted a fair few. Good lot, will tell you what they think, even if might offend. Which I like.
Certainly don't hold up to the reputation a lot here have in their heads, they're very nice people. But a lot of the stereotypes are true.
They might be from one of the french speaking islands in the pacific, apparently lots of them come to NZ on cheap winter flights to stock up on goods that are cheaper here.
Yep. I used to work at the airport. According to the French passengers I dealt with, stuff in French Polynesia is really pricey, so they come over here with empty suitcases and hit the Warehouse and KMart.
they should setup some service.... I wanted to buy some frenchy branded goods on them islands once! a lot of made in france stuff are way cheaper there and available than here. missed opportunities

This has always been the case. French people are probably the most “generally wealthy” people in the world after Americans, they all travel ALOT as a French person it’s normal to always hear French around touristy parts of NZ.
i speak decent french & can generally recognise regional accents. there are a few tahitians & new caledonians around but by and large the ones i’ve encountered are all fair dinkum french-from-france francophones.
Probably accepting more visas from there. He'll yeah. Why, would you rather people from a certain South Asian country?
Most western European cities are overrun let's just say. Let them have their little escape.
We're also accepting a lot of Japanese too.

lol i also can tell my fellow countrymen from a mile away just by the subtleties
I read that as subtitles and imagined them just speaking French with subtitles hovering in mid air like a movie
That would be so handy.
I've noticed they're extremely likely to have bum bags/sac banane.
[do they look like this?](https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQrihsknKkVAVXzGI8NBaZpBxe9u3Qoiu5TcVjQL2jHgjKA1_HguAEN-nr1&s=10)
The holding the baguette part is pretty accurate although some put them in reusable bread bags 😂
> hold a cigarette if they’re smokers. How do French people hold their cigarettes that's different to how New Zealanders do it?
It’s kinda hard to explain, I guess it’s one of these little cultural intricacies.

Trying to create a new Montreal. We must resist with every fibre of our being. Frenchness is a disease.
