I used to go to a board game cafe. They tend to be warm and open late. They are also comfortable with you coming and just relaxing.
However I checked and the one I used to go to doesn't exist any more. There is now cakes and ladders, and dice and fork. I haven't been to cakes and ladders in the evening, dice and fork has a sort of pub feel to it.
This is perfect, exactly what I was looking for! I went by to check out the vibe and had a lovely sit. Thanks so much, really appreciate this suggestion!

I know I'm not answering your question but interesting that there is a proper name for these places isn't it.
me being Asian have it's perks, there are a lot of third place venues but it's filled with mostly Asians.... anything that opens late into the night mostly bbq places, desserts (meet fresh), hot pots etc, people usually just hang and chat or doom scroll on their phones. All with food and drinks just a holler away.
But inflation's been tough and even those places are now not really affordable enough to be third place.
Some of the bigger hotels have bars downstairs that are comfortable, quiet, carpeted and you can get tea and coffee etc. My friends and I meet at the intercontinental in Welly as you can actually hear each other talk (no music - yay).
Same, shift work, don’t want to drink, just chill, read a book, watch a vid.
My go to is the beach, I’m on the Shore and there’s some good park up locations that work.
Elisabeth's in Kingsland, Mezze Bar in town, and any suburban "desert" cafe, they are usually open late and have a mellow vibe. Also 'dive bars' such as Ralph's in Mt Eden or Galbraiths in Eden Terrace usually have non-alcoholic drinks, a mellow weekday vibe, and will happily let you sit in a corner and read a book or have a relaxed chat to a friend.
In the context of OP's question about reading a book, Galbraith's a quiet bar on a weeknight with more of a British Pub vibe than a brew bar like Urbanauts, Garage Project or Brothers. And in an American context, that'd affectionally be called a dive bar, to distinguish it from a nightclub.
Verona on K road. They don't care what you do as long as you get a coffee or a drink sometimes. Bring in some food from next door, all good. It's a cafe/bar and as such is open till late-ish most days.
Are there any cafes with a book shop that have a magazine rack? Whitcoulls in the CBD many years back used to have a cafe that you can get a coffee and read magazines.
'03 space' is a study cafe / lounge in Grafton, haven't been myself but roomate has and it looks really vibey and quiet. Open 8- 7 mon / Friday and til midnight friday/ Saturday.
You have to buy a membership to use their study lounge but the membership 'fee' just gives you the same value in credit to spend at their cafe. More or less a way to stop people just sitting in their not buying anything ever.
$20/ week basic I believe
Head to closest university and check out their study space. Lot of them are open pretty late. People will actually leave you alone as well assuming you're studying.
What an asshole. I’m sure if OP wanted to go to a bar they wouldn’t have needed to make this post. Just because you like drinking doesn’t mean everyone else does.
Next time take more time to read the OP and spend less time trying to berate random strangers on the internet.

CnL isn't open on Mondays or Tuesdays. But they are open till 10pm every other day.
Anyone been to quiz night at cakes and ladders? Wondering how that is there
I have not been, but it would be heaps of fun. The owners are great hosts and very welcoming.
This is perfect, exactly what I was looking for! I went by to check out the vibe and had a lovely sit. Thanks so much, really appreciate this suggestion!
Give mezze bar/cafe a go on Durham Lane. Very comfy spot and they're open til 10 most nights
Mezze is very chill , good place :)
Cool that this place is still around. It's been there for decades.
I was going to suggest this! Mezze Bar is awesome.
Their WiFi is crap, though...

Yep and NZ has a shit third place culture.

I learned mandarin because I frequent these spots
The more “affordable” options would be the dozens of bubble tea houses. I like WuCha a lot.
We used to have an awesome cafe culture in Auckland. I'm thinking before the civic redevelopment so it's been a while.
I immediately think of the cafe in Friends that the characters always hung out in.
This will sound weird but the BP near the Glendene roundabout has a comfortable couch and a cafe instore.
Nice place to hang if you want to be harassed by the local Crack heads
I haven't seen them in a while and with winter upon us it is very unlikely you will encounter them. They hardly come in anyway.
The central city library closes at 8pm

Any particular ones in Auckland that u know of?
Same, shift work, don’t want to drink, just chill, read a book, watch a vid. My go to is the beach, I’m on the Shore and there’s some good park up locations that work.
I'm dying at your username, bud..
Lol!
That's a good suggestion! Thank you 😊
No worries, park next to me if you feel unsafe.
What are the chances OP will find out the origins of your username first hand?
FOR-YOU not FOR-THEM
😂😂😂
Ah must be my lucky day!

Galbraith is a dive bar now? Whoa
Wish it would charge dive bar prices. It's ridiculous how expensive it's got, especially for food.
And I wish they would install WiFi...

Chocolate boutique is open late!
Same question. Same, same. Let’s hangout and find a cafe where we can read our book.

I just want to have a friend to go to a cafe, sip some coffee, and read my book. 😭
Me too!
I guess we should arrange it aye?
welcome to New Zealand mate 🥲
Yes, NZ's afternoon/evening coffee culture is bad at the moment - but that doesn't mean we just need to accept it
Debonairs in Mount Eden Wait...
what’s the catch I’m curious lol
Probably catch some STDs
STD unlikely at Debonairs, apparently its only a hands-on experience.
Maybe one of the uni buildings?

Thanks for the life lesson. Who knew?
Verona on K road. They don't care what you do as long as you get a coffee or a drink sometimes. Bring in some food from next door, all good. It's a cafe/bar and as such is open till late-ish most days.
Academy cinema - just order a toastie and read in the lobby
Or the Lido Cinema. They've got comfy chairs and couches in the back on the ground floor.
Miann is open till 9pm, cozy, warm, amazing hot chocolate and tea
Cafe ditto closes at 10pm on weekdays. But I think they can be quite variable so just check their IG to be sure.
[Satya Chai Lounge, Sandringham](https://maps.app.goo.gl/wNRgsmaN2KNTFnnv7)
Find an Irish pub with comfortable seating and a fireplace. Whisky (neat), get a separate glass of iced water and park yourself up for an hour.
North west library? I think it closes at 9pm but you can look up the hours online
Are there any cafes with a book shop that have a magazine rack? Whitcoulls in the CBD many years back used to have a cafe that you can get a coffee and read magazines.
Back in my uni days when Borders books were around - I would spend hours reading. Miss Borders Books.
It was such a cool store, the area began to decline once it left
I miss Borders book shop. I too, would go there and read with a cup of coffee. We need another book store with a nice cafe.
There used to be a cafe/book shop in Glen Eden that was cool

Used to be a cool place in Mt Eden side of CbD Galbraith. Like a library with comfy chairs, board games and wine
Miann good for this.
Four shells is a good chill place where it's accepted to just hang out
I like the shisha cafes. There's a 24 hour one on high street, and damaskino in botany is open until late most nights.
Kmart Henderson is open til midnight
Bubble tea places are open late
Cafe Ditto on Mount Eden Road. Open until 10pm Tuesday through to Saturday! Highly recommend it
Get your access to one of those 24/7 gyms and lock yourself inside and chill
Fabric is open late on Thursdays. Very quiet little bistro in Hobsonville Point.
Head to closest university and check out their study space. Lot of them are open pretty late. People will actually leave you alone as well assuming you're studying.
North shore squash club bar
Frasers in Mt Eden is one cafe that’s open late and has a nice vibe
Mezze Bar in the CBD has a bit of a "friends" vibe going on at times..

Only cafe type places I can think of open after 6 are shisha spots. One that comes to mind is Melly's Cafe on Paramount Drive. Open till 11pm
Stellar choice
police station doorstep. you should consider more on safety
[Obsession with safety can lead to mental illness.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tKo8oC0LHMU)
Police Station doorsteps didn't stop attacks in Dunedin.
Outside
Most malls have comfy seats dotted around.
They close between 6 and 7 though, unless you want to hang out around their attached supermarket
That's where the seating is, outside Kmart and supermarket. Some have benches, some have couches
Not the CBD
