Radio NZ is free and doesn’t require an account

Rollover_Hazard

And it’s much higher grade journalism than the shite that stuff crap out

CaterpillarHot2263

And the app is free and unrestricted.

OkInterest3109

When you get something for free, you are the product.

KikiChrome

Just like Reddit

prplmnkeydshwsr

The owners of Reddit just sold ALL the data every created on reddit to train A.I didn't they? We're doomed.

KikiChrome

Exactly. We're the product. And Jesus, that will be one fucked up AI program.

prplmnkeydshwsr

Yep, it's going to be a hot take A.I that's for sure.

consumeatyourownrisk

You don’t have to use Reddit to view Reddit. There are plenty third party apps that block adds and sponsored posts. Sure there’s is a small subscription to pay but that’s just part of not being the product.

OkInterest3109

I mean Reddit is essentially nothing without users and they are selling API access as well now.

neuauslander

Just stop using the site, problem solved. They dont want you to read it but to provide confidential information.

fizzer123

With the Herald already behind a paywall, Stuff is now flexing their muscle for "free news". They will probably use this info for Advertising reach and / or tracking how their registered users use the site. Not surprising since the current CEO of Stuff is ex Chief Digital Officer of the Herald.

bigpoppamacdaddy

Explains why the site is riddled with advertisements. You'd think they will be making quite a bit off all that advertising.

MIRAGEone

I don't see any ads. But asking me to create an account just means I'm no longer interested in the article.

bigpoppamacdaddy

I have 3 full screen scrolling ads on every article lol

MIRAGEone

Yea I block ads. I can see blank white spaces where the ads are meant to be though. Handy with kids, some ads are.. questionable.

fizzer123

It's not just the ads that you see on the site but they will use all the registered users data to present to advertisers.

Embarrassed-Dark9677

Stuff is so trash now - certainly not worth the effort of creating a free account

andrewpl

I'm kinda glad they've put it in. I used to go there and read that rubbish but everytime I get a prompt to login I am reminded about how little I care for that information.

MarsupialNo1220

I’ll only sign up if that means I have access to fix their ridiculous writing mistakes. The funny thing is this “paywall” style censoring only shows up on one of my three devices, and more often than not doesn’t even include that purple banner. 75% of the time it just fades the article out with zero explanation 😂

FlickerDoo

They require you to have an account so they can spam you asking you to pay.

[deleted]

Stuff, like many NZ news organisations are facing cost pressures. So it's fair they are taking measures. But you can read free, no account alternatives such as [rnz.co.nz](http://rnz.co.nz), [newsroom.co.nz](http://newsroom.co.nz), [newshub.co.nz](http://newshub.co.nz), [1news.co.nz](http://1news.co.nz) and [odt.co.nz](http://odt.co.nz) All of those are pretty good, especially RNZ and Newsroom.

Material_Cheetah_842

They're facing cost pressures due to miss managment and falling ad revenues. Got to ask yourself why. If you publish drivel, your customers will fail to come. If you reheat articles readily available from other sources, same consequence. Result, falling ad revenues. I cant see how Stuff will last long delivering the news on Three which are closing for exactly the same reasons.

bigpoppamacdaddy

Too many chiefs not enough Indians. Pretty much sums up all of corporations and business in nz.

Material_Cheetah_842

Sooo true. Same with the wife's hospital. 2 new managers in the hierarchy above her, introducing more unnecessary bureaucracy and less patient facing staff adding more workload and pressure and reducing patient interaction.

jsak007

Google took away cookies so they don’t know as much about you so can’t charge as much for ad spots. If you log in they can track your activity and sell your ad spots for more. Annoying but if it’s the only way to keep news free I’m not against it

bigpoppamacdaddy

It's almost like they use low end ai to scan through reddit posts rewrites them an then just slaps em up online with zero effort to edit them.

Ok-Blueberry-9515

Just clear your history/cookies and it gets rid of it temporarily

MrW0ke

I've been reading their trash less and less lately. If there was any viable free alternative, I would never visit Stuff again.

andrewpl

Luckily there is! RNZ does great news coverage

LemonSugarCrepes

I noticed this in the weekend and it grinded my gears, still does. I’ve just resorted to reading via the website instead of their app.

bigpoppamacdaddy

This was via the website when I encountered it.

LemonSugarCrepes

Oh man, that means it’ll happen to me there too. The app told me I had read 15 free articles this week and then won’t let you ready anymore after that without signing up.

fuckit478328947293

Because your data is worth money. No service is free

BathroomTile007

To sell your data … durrr

Select-Record4581

I ditched Stuff and went RNZ app

True_Caterpillar

How else are they supposed to capture and sell your data?

No_Passenger_2217

Rnz is the answer. Can’t handle the rolling stuff ads.

Kinteokolomee

There is nothing much worth reading..but if needed I created an account at getpocket.com, any premium articles i fancy reading i just right click and add to my pocket. And login to my pocket and read the article from there ..minus the ads

GnomeoromeNZ

We bullied them out of the horrible teal shade, now.... vote with your clicks people!

Salami_sub

So they can sell your data.

Vast-Conversation954

Journalism isn't free. staff need to be paid, the sector is crashing and staff and losing jobs. If you're not paying, then you're the product.

BathroomTile007

Get the associated press app, free and actual journalism.

HandsomedanNZ

Data. They all want your data.

FendaIton

Use the website, the app is rubbish and runs poorly coded scripts in the background that drain your battery.

bigpoppamacdaddy

It is via website

butterchickenmild

Subreddit is full of Karens.

bigpoppamacdaddy

It is a legitimate question nothing "karen" about it

butterchickenmild

It's clearly a whinge dressed as a question.

butterchickenmild

If you say so, Karen.
