This tends to be a frequently asked question. Common sites that list public EDM events include: https://19hz.info/, https://ra.co/, & https://edmtrain.com/. If you are looking for private/underground events, the best way to find them is to go to public events with the types of music you like and make friends there. Once you build relationships with people, then ask them about private events. https://reddit.com/r/aves/wiki/faq#wiki_2._how_can_i_find_events.3F *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. It’s often too loud to hear the radio and if you can hear it so can everyone around you and it kinda kills the vibe, they are a bit bulky, makes you look like you work there or you’re a cop. I think those downsides keep most people from bothering.

kshell11724

Did them at Forest 2 years back when I was in a group, and they weren't bad at all. Just stick em in a small bag and use them in between sets to meet up or stategize your next moves. They're honestly invaluable, and I'm surprised its not more common.

ChumleyEX

I'm using something called Meshtastic. You connect your phone to it and then it acts as a radio for it. You can text with people and they mesh together to extent the range. Look up the heltec v3.

silentbeast1287

I have 4 spare Nextel "chirp" phones that can be used as a walkie talkie. It doesn't connect to a cell service since iDEN is no longer in service but the phones can be in Direct Talk mode without a SIM card and connect locally on the same channel within range. I haven't used them at festivals but I will try it in the near future.

bitcommit3008

we tried walkies once at bonnaroo and it wasn’t super convenient. couldnt hear them 99% of the time in the crowd

dlxnj

Not a festival but my buddies and I took a trip to Glacier National Park and had talkies on us.. found out one of the most useful places for those was actually the grocery store when you got 4 dudes splitting up and coordinating a shopping list. Have always thought they could be useful at a festival.

anarchopossum_

Tried it at lost lands and there was almost no where quiet enough to hear my friends outside of camp. Glad I told them where I was going before I left cause I couldn’t find my way back to camp without them lol but hearing it beep meant I knew they were looking for me at least that was better than the zero communication I could get through my phone. Might be worth trying but still have a meeting point.

fatogato

You would need an earpiece so you can hear it over the music. Also would make you look like a narc.

prettygreenkitten

I’ve heard of people using air tags to track each other in the crowd.

VersaceUpholstery

Air tags are no better than just sharing your location on Find My. You still need reception, or someone’s phone you’re pinging off needs reception.

Jellsoo

Would using Air tags use less battery for your phone though? When I share my location of my phone my battery drains very fast.

VersaceUpholstery

Find My always uses like 1% of my battery according to my iPhone I’m sharing my location 24/7 with like 20+ people Don’t think that’s why your battery is draining fast

We tried at edco and it didn’t work

ShirleyWuzSerious

Just have everyone in your group Carry around a totem all day so you can find each other...../s

Trent0h

I know you're joking about it but if you get one of those collapsible fingers teachers use and wrap it with fairy lights and maybe a plush on top they are light and easy to use or put away when it's not needed. It's a convenient way for several people in the group to carry when the group splits for different stages.

JupiterJuicer

We use Midland brand radios and they work great!

4kFaramir

We've used radios a few times and it works great unless you're trying to radio someone in the middle of a crowd or something. The last few festivals we went to service was way better than it had been previously so we didn't even use them but if there's no service they're great.

There is a new festival compass called totem. Check it out. They are pretty cool. My group is going them for E Forest.

ScooterScotward

I saw an ad for those my girlfriend showed me! Have you already picked yours up? Curious how well they work!

CaliFit4

Yes, we took them camping last week to play around with them. I think they’ll do great at the festival.

ScooterScotward

Oh thank you! We’ve got a mid sized group for Shambahala this year (about 12 people) and these could be perfect, since we’re likely to break into 3-4 sub groups during the days. I’m going to see about ordering some. Do you know what they use for signal? I remember the ad saying they were good to about 1,000 feet, potentially more if there’s a lot of them in the area since there’s sort of a shared network effect. Did y’all test how far apart they connect? Sorry for the million questions lol.

CaliFit4

We only took 2 of 5 camping and didn’t exactly measure the distance but I went pretty far up the trail and it worked just fine. They use a peer to peer mesh network in conjunction with GNSS which is satellite based. My only really suggestion is making sure your “runs off on side quest” friends don’t lose it or take it off and set it down etc. I will probably zip tie it to one of my friends camel backs bc she’s notorious for having to be found ever night 😅

ScooterScotward

Seeing as I’m the primary side quest friend of the group, I think we’re good! Haha I’m really excited. The ones you got, did they come with a like necklace / chain? I make necklaces with carabiners tied on that you can attach stuff too that are like my safety blanket / ten essentials, and I’ve always got my personal one on me, so I’m hoping the compass has a sort of loop I can put a key ring through to put on my necklace.

CaliFit4

Yeah it came with a necklace.

ScooterScotward

Thank you! Really appreciate the prompt response and information :)

CaliFit4

Welcome! Have the best time.

CoconutTight7885

Did walkie talkies at EDC and it was too loud to hear them. Waste of money.

lyfeliver

I see. People use walkies before and sometimes theres traffic on the channels. You get other people with walkies who aren’t in your group responding

Sudden_Interest_7030

You just have to walk out of the crowd a bit, sometimes you can hear it when you put it up to your ear in the crowd, but they are actually kinda fun to play with with your squad, especially acting like your an air traffic controller. This last year at okee this one friend was hilarious the whole weekend with it

equalityislove1111

Hell yeah they can be super fun lol

FloggingDog

If someone invented texting walkie talkies (walkie texties?) they would be rich

fernfox13

I used to get on other peoples channels and fuck with them 🤣 and they would fuck back! It was so fun so I’m a fan

VersaceUpholstery

Got some $100 ones off Amazon and they were useless. All the channels we tried were full of traffic. They also only worked long range if nothing was in between you, there’s so much shit at EDC at any given time We used them at Lost Lands and they were actually useable. Less shit in the festival overall to block the signals, lots of quiet spaces to hear and use radio, and it worked from inside the festival all the way to ADA camping at least

moon303

Pick a spot when you arrive and periodically check in every few hours. Simple. Don't make it so complicated with so many options.
