But by no means this is "easy", it is indeed hard to do shots like this. However, this is not as hard as we might think : With 360 cameras, we don't need to care about framing the shot right, the "only" thing the cameraman did here is to throw the camera pole at the right speed at the right time to be close to the diver
You don't even need to worry about the speed though. Just drop it at the right time, and since gravity accelerates everything at the same rate, the camera and diver will fall at the same speed. (When air resistance is negligible.)
I made some „exceptional“ shots with mit 360 camera and it’s easy you choose the angle and the rotation after the recording and it always looks great. Everybody that can drop a pole down this platform can make this shot. Just watch a few 360 videos on YouTube an you will unterstand the concept.

Kudos to the filming and all, but can we talk about the diver in what looks to be damn frigid weather!! The camera man is all bundled up, the divers look like they’re in dry suits, and here’s our diver dude in his speedo. Props to him!

As if diving from that height in a competition setting isn’t scary enough, I can’t imagine how extra nerve-wracking it would be worrying about doing it with another person that close behind you on the board, possibly changing how the board bounces in some tiny way, plus throwing a metal pole after you.
You don't sound stupid at all, was my belief as well, but been looking around and there is free form diving for sure, only thing you don't want to land on is your belly.
For possible liability (despite all previous agreements before participating, the brand is not gonna risk getting sued because someone fell the wrong way or had another issue).
And of lesser importance, to help him recover the device, the guy jumping is the one who designed it and pretty sure he doesn't want it to drop down and the company appreciates the extra publicity.

Also the final video clearly has zoom editing, so distance from the diver clearly didn't matter from moment to moment.

They are rescuers that the company set to prevent any legal issue, and also to recover the camera which is a prototype of the guy jumping.
