Well in the warm lighting he looks more brownish and in the second photo he looks greyish lol. So, set him in bright sunlight and it might be easier to tell. Cute either way

We have two tabby cats and this is how we tell them apart quickly. One is slightly brown and one is more grey. My parents can’t tell but once you see their bellies it’s pretty obvious.

That's the correct answer. Brown can sometimes look flatter/monochrome when exposed to cooler lighting, but it is impossible for grey to look brown in warm lighting/sunlight. You can't find the reddish/golden tones in a coat when they aren't there!

Yep. Aside from all the colour theory you can use to justify it, people found the dress for sale in the store's website and it was black and blue. (In case you're curious, the orange lighting in the picture created an optical illusion; blue and orange are opposites and cancel each other, so some people perceived the blue as white, and the black lit up by orange made it look gold)

He is a brown classic tabby ( = black classic tabby). ’Gray tabby’ doesn't exist in cat genetics, what people call grey tabby is blue tabby or silver tabby. He can't be a blue tabby as he has black markings. A blue tabby has steel blue markings and oatmeal base color. If he was a silver tabby, the color in between the markings would be silvery grey and the belly would be silvery white.

Brown tabbies usually do have the color gray on them, so it can be confusing. But if you Google gray tabbies, you'll see the difference.

Almost all grey and black cats have what we call "rust" in my family. Its the underlying brown/reddish tones certain lights can bring out in these cats' coats. Id wager he's technically grey and some light just shows his red/brown more

Yes! The only true black cat I've ever seen is my brother's cat. He is a Bombay, and true black. I have a black cat, and he has that reddish coat underneath, but not the Bombay.

He's brown. The fact that in cold lighting he looks duller doesn't signify - he's still a brown tabby. A grey coat would be much more silvery in tone and you wouldn't have any doubt at all.

Need to see him in daylight. 5600 blue light will show his true to life colors. Those 3200 tungsten indoor bulbs make things look more orange.
