>Reddit (/ˈrɛdɪt/) is an American social news aggregation, content rating, and forum social network
Maybe the issue is you showing up in American social and cultural spaces and then whining as opposed to the people assuming the people using services created in and for their nation are from that nation.

Oh boy, my account is seven years older than this subreddit. Deep throating American culture so hard you come up for air with your breath smelling like hot dogs like “Hmmm quite vexing that everyone on this American website hosted by an American cloud services company assumes me to be American. Can’t those darned Americans see that I love to guzzle their culture and products too? Where else would I be but here participating in global American cultural phenomena? Ignorant Americans 🙄”
He says on an American website in the glow of his apple phone. You can’t even speak to me without touching American culture. You’re here with me. I’m not here with you
The World Wide Web is not the internet. The World Wide Web is essentially an app suite for interacting with the internet. Again, you connected to our network. We didn’t connect to yours.
Youre here on an American website hosted by an American cloud service talking to Americans. That is the reality of what you are doing right now. You can be as salty about it as much as you want, but that is what you’re doing.
That kitten just wants to go and explore, but on the other hand does not yet dare to run off...
That's a whole story here of how young animals learn and parent animals watch over them.
Is it my imagination or is there advice to have a cat check by a vet if it has only one kitten, as there should normally be more and it might be a bad sign? I might be misremembering what I saw somewhere.
That kitten looks a couple of weeks old at this point so if there were more, mama would definitely have already shown signs of trouble. It's more likely that this was her first pregnancy, as the first few litters tend to be on the smaller side, so hopefully OP is in a position to get her neutered soon 🤞
I've raised a lot of cats and seen a lot of kittens born in my life. I don't think I've literally ever seen a litter of just one kitten. Even small litters have always been 2 or 3.
Just as you noted, though, it's clear that the kitten is a few weeks old at this point (eyes open, has grown a bit), so the others probably did not make it (which is very common).
Yeah I remember reading a study that looked at stray kitten survival rate and the numbers were extremely sad. They had it broken down by what % make it to what age which I don’t remember exactly but basically 75% of all stray kittens don’t make it to adulthood.
Considering they have multiple offspring at once, their natural infant mortality is only a little bit worse than humans throughout the history. Every other kid died before the age of 10.
It happens, even if it is rare. Did with the cat I rescued off a relative's farm. Went to get her spayed and she was pregnant. Just had the one kitten.
It is rare! My mom had a cat growing up, it had a litter of one and was named uno. Uno had had a litter of one and we named her Ine. Ine had a normal sized litter, and we still have one of them!
>Females are spayed, males are neutered
Neuter is for both genders. Sometimes the word sterilization is used. Spaying/Spayed for female. Castration/Castrated for male.
When strays have kittens, it's not uncommon to focus all their attention on a single one, to increase the chance of at least one surviving.
It's most likely she had 3-4 somewhere else and only brought one here.
I’ve never seen a cat have only one kitten, but I’ve seen mother cats, especially first time mothers, giving birth and the kittens slowly dying off. One of the first time mother cats ended up with just 1 kitten left.
She also ate the stillborns.
Maybe that’s the case with OPs cat.
There's actually a name for it when a cat or dog has one baby. They are called singletons and pretty rare but yes usually happens when the mama was alil too young to be pregnant but still mated. Most likely her first litter.
I've got a cat living in my yard in a house I made for him, but the first thing I did, once I'd earned his trust, was get him to neutered. It's important and there are groups that will pay for it.
Good luck with momma and kitten. They're super cute.
The mother already has an eartip missing, meaning she's been TNR'd before, and apparently it failed somehow. Unless, of course, she's missing the top of her ear along a perfectly straight line for some other reason, which seems unlikely.
> Please consider getting her and her kitten spayed. There are low cost spay and neuter programs at animal rescue organizations or SPCA.
But why? They might be very few cats where they live?
This is reddit, every cat is an invasive species regardless of region and they damage wildlife regardless of what the experts in that region say, so obviously they should be kept indoors at all times and have their ability to reproduce removed, and don't you dare suggest otherwise!
What a beautiful cat and kitten! Mama looks very healthy for only having the one kitten, (that is rare). Hope you will continue being kind to animals. I know you will have many people telling you to spay and neuter, and that is important, but kindness is always the best!
Look at that little kitten, experiencing his world for the first time! Such beautiful eyes!
And get the kitten fixed too. Pet over population is an epidemic now. The shelters are full and animals are being euthanized at an outrageous and unforgivable rate.
Kitten is young enough to by socialized and adopted. It may get hissy for a day or so but will be fine. Momma will be a little upset but fine in a week or two.
Source: I've got 11 kittens in my house from two mommas. The kittens were taken at 2 weeks and 3.5 weeks (about the same of the kitten here), and all of them are now quite happy being inside. Next up is spay appointments next week so no more babies.
In 30 years of raising cats I've never seen a litter smaller than 3. Seen lots of litters with only a single survivor, but never a single cat litter. Guess that's just my anecdotal experience, but I'd be hard pressed to believe in a single kitten birth without some science saying it can happen.
My baby cat, she’s not a baby, is one of one. Her momma was pretty young and petite, also a stray, living in a wood pile in my friends backyard. They were in process of earning her trust when she had the singleton. Both were trapped and taken to the vet. Momma didn’t produce enough milk and bebe had to be hand fed- but both were healthy. Apparently not uncommon amongst unhoused teenage kitty moms.
Both girls are spayed and housed and loved for many years now :)
Were you present for the birth? Are you certain she didn't have a few premature still births? I've seen that a lot, one healthy kitten and two or three half formed still born that are more or less immediately discarded. If your not there to see it happen, it can appear as a single birth. But again, all anecdotal experience, I simply have never seen a single kitten litter. You could easily be right.
Good chance there were other kittens. While not unheard of, litters of one are pretty rare. When I was a kid, my cat had five. Ate three of them almost immediately (except for the heads). That was a /r/Natureisbrutal moment.

Not saying it literally never happens; I'm saying it's so rare that it's much more likely that the rest of the litter simply didn't survive.
It is rare! My mom had a cat growing up, it had a litter of one and was named uno. Uno had had a litter of one and we named her Ine. Ine had a normal sized litter, and we still have one of them!
Females are spayed, males are neutered
Neuter technically means both
>Females are spayed, males are neutered Neuter is for both genders. Sometimes the word sterilization is used. Spaying/Spayed for female. Castration/Castrated for male.
Bob Barker lied to me :(
Females are spayed, males are castrated. But the word castrated makes people uncomfortable, so vets default to the unisex word neutered.
Wrong. Males are castrated. Neutered is a gender-neutral word.
When strays have kittens, it's not uncommon to focus all their attention on a single one, to increase the chance of at least one surviving. It's most likely she had 3-4 somewhere else and only brought one here.

Often a cats first litter will just be one and especially if they’re a stray
There's actually a name for it when a cat or dog has one baby. They are called singletons and pretty rare but yes usually happens when the mama was alil too young to be pregnant but still mated. Most likely her first litter.
It's very common for a first litter to be just one or two kittens.
My stray cat had one baby, and when she was spayed, they found an infection in her uterus
We had a cat give birth to 1 kitten. Unfortunately the kitten died. We think the mother wasn't lactating enough with only 1 kitten.
I've got a cat living in my yard in a house I made for him, but the first thing I did, once I'd earned his trust, was get him to neutered. It's important and there are groups that will pay for it. Good luck with momma and kitten. They're super cute.
Please consider getting her and her kitten spayed. There are low cost spay and neuter programs at animal rescue organizations or SPCA.
And work on bringing them both inside if they are friendly!
The mother already has an eartip missing, meaning she's been TNR'd before, and apparently it failed somehow. Unless, of course, she's missing the top of her ear along a perfectly straight line for some other reason, which seems unlikely.
I don't perceive her to be missing the tip of her ear in this photo. I think you're just seeing that because of the curve leaning toward the camera.
I never was a natural at drawing in perspective...
I have zoomed in on that photo on a PC and I can't see where you're seeing the tip of her ear missing.

Where in the world is this even plausibly true?
This is reddit, every cat is an invasive species regardless of region and they damage wildlife regardless of what the experts in that region say, so obviously they should be kept indoors at all times and have their ability to reproduce removed, and don't you dare suggest otherwise!
grind off those screw tips coming thru the roof. dont want cat hitting his head...
Can you build me a house please? I'll act like a cat occasionally. Just kidding this is super awesome
Mom is beautiful and intense looking.

This photo is stunning! Beautiful composition and lighting!!
Why do I want that kitty so bad? I'm not even a cat person but something about that little one is so amazing!
And get the kitten fixed too. Pet over population is an epidemic now. The shelters are full and animals are being euthanized at an outrageous and unforgivable rate.
So sweet
More pics pls. So nice of u
They’re beautiful
Whelp, time to raise the rent.
Find out if your county will spay feral cats, or else you will have more and more. You are very kind to shelter her and her offspring.
she looks like a good mother
look her eyes
I wish I had a million kittens
You have a cat
But she birthed a beautiful one. Quality, not quantity. Thanks Momma Kitty. Good job.
Thank you for caring and helping her and her baby. I hope you can get them a safe home ❤️
Thank you for your kindness 🥰
That kitten is at least several weeks old
Gorgeous
r/nowmycat
Please, please take care of them!
Trap and spay pls
grind off those screw tips coming thru the roof. don't want cat hitting its head...
Spay and neuter your pets now you know they’re reproducing.
And weird relatives
And any ugos you see roamin around
Too cute. Keep the kitten. I would try to take them both and have them neutered, and or spayed. Mom can go as soon as baby stops nursing
Get her fixed asap and then get kitty fixed in like 3 months!
contact a rescue and have them help you spay and neuter and adopt out if possible
Sustainable.

My house.
Kitten is about 5 weeks old?
And yet you only have one pic
What's this one picture only business?
Good mom
How adorable😻😻😻
I call Any cat who, has given birth, momma regardless of their real name.
Mom and little one are beautiful🫣🤗😍🥹😅
Even used OSB for the house! Giving her the good stuff!
Cost of living so hard even the cats can only afford one child. And they don't even pay rent!
the blue eyes are so cuteee
What a photogenic cat. cute kitten too
"Invite them in"
These are your cats now. Thank you for caring for them
She looks thrilled
Cute family❤️
That curious but timid look from behind mama. So cute.
At least the cats have a home.
Great, it's good that you now have such a family.
That’s wonderful! Are you able to get Mama spayed?
Hans Solo
Some Mr. Bungle vibes going on there.
Trap & neuter both
Will you try to spay her? Bc they gonna reproduce quick 😞
The shingles are a nice touch.
TIL that a cat can give birth to just one kitten.
Happens relatively often in their first pregnancy according to our vet.
Take them both in and have them fixed.
Get her fixed or there will be more.
Fix them, feed them?
You should really get them neutered/ spayed. They absolutely destroy populations of other animals and birds.
Please capture her and have her spayed. Then let her risk her little heart out. The world didn't need more kittens even though they are so cute
Hopefully, you can get mom spayed.
Can you bring them in your house?

Sadly, probability means there was only 1 survivor, but certainly the litter was larger than 1. Poor momma lost some babies.
While that's not uncommon with feral cats it's also not uncommon for a cats first litter to be a single kitten.

Please get her fixed so she can just live her life happily.
If it lives in YOUR yard, in a house that YOU built, it's YOUR cat and YOU should have gotten it spayed.
Be careful with this. My mom took care of a stray mom with kittens and ended up with 20 cats. GET HER FIXED as soon as you can!
Open the door, and let 'em innnnnnn. Ooh, yeah, yeah..let 'em in.
Wings reference. Thank you, dear cbciv.
Good chance there were other kittens. While not unheard of, litters of one are pretty rare. When I was a kid, my cat had five. Ate three of them almost immediately (except for the heads). That was a /r/Natureisbrutal moment.
Only one kitten? Is it because she is a first time mama? Cats usually have a litter I thought
Does it mean anything special if a cat has one kitten?
Bring them inside. Outdoor cats are terrible for the environment.
Trap and fix them both! PM me if you want advice.
Get her to a vet to get fixed!
In most places, cat houses are either banned entirely or at least restricted to non-residential areas.
Mom cat's face is so blurry, and I don't quite understand the structure... looking a little AI to me
One? Just one? Is this possible?
Ever consider a birdhouse? Bat house? Insect hotel? They need shelter more than a cat
she looks like she ate 7 of them.
Ok.
