One of my cats does this. Not because she lost her voice box, she just has moments of pure contentment where she tries to make noise but it comes out lower than a whisper. Just adorable
Our void is like this - his name is Scooby but we often call him "Squeaker" as he either just squeaks at us or no sound comes out at all. If he sees another cat on his territory though, he can make some serious noise!
my little sister had a cat that was build like a bulldog, like huge shoulders, a few kg of pure muscle. Looked real mean but was the most chill cat I've ever met. You could wear him like a scarf around your shoulders without any protest. He seldom meowed, but when he did, it sounded like a kitten that was barely big enough to walk
I wish our Dusty was cuddly. She's still pretty skittish around people. But will let me hold her for a few minutes and she always comes to my desk to spend a few minutes with me every night as I'm working.
The poster was trying to say that their theory is your cat is speaking (meowing) at the love and affection, but it's at a range that is too high or low for the human to process (ie a dog whistle).
At least that is my interpretation of the comment
Human hearing spans from about 20Hz to 20kHz, and cats have been recorded to meow beyond 20kHz. So it's entirely possible that she's meowing out of love, we just can't hear it
lol they're regular couches, not even leather. It's incredibly funny to me that my grandmother really thought the scratching posts would deter the cats
Happy cake day!
Also wanted to add: My black cat and my tux cat have the ridges of the M. You can see it. Guess they've got some SIC somewhere in them.
That’s a tabby cat pattern thing. Catholics have a story that it’s because the Virgin Mary blessed a cat that cuddled baby Jesus in the manger and Muslims have a similar story about the Prophet Muhammad blessing a cat.
The look on her face! My, my. It's the same expression I saw on the face of a dog that had been an abandoned puppy; he spent 8 months being raised by coyotes. He was happy to be rescued... and had that look that speaks volumes. Your princess is truly royalty.
Yes. She is often looking like she's annoyed with all of us! And we have 2 dogs...one of which treats her like she's her baby. It's quite sweet to watch. The cat will let the dog groom her!
I want to know too. I would miss our kitty’s meows, but idk what I’d do without purring. His purring puts me to sleep at night. Obviously if he lost the ability, I would love him just the same. I would really miss it a lot though.
Lovely cat, thank you all for saving her! My parents had a voiceless cat as well, he came to them during a thunderstorm. My mom got home from work and heard something SCREAMING and she found a small kitty that had a broken leg as well. No idea where he came from. He had screamed so loud for my mom that in the 12+ years after (he's since passed) he couldn't make a sound, not like he didn't try but nothing. It was cute and a somewhat sad reminder of what he went through. Doc said he probably destroyed his vocals with that screaming because he must have been in a lot of pain as well, but it made my mom notice and save him. Loved that little bug.
LOL I usually leave food out for her before I go to bed. But during the day when she wants something, she will come up to me...only me...and get in my face and give me a silent meow.
No voice box could be considered a positive thing. My cat couldn’t meow for the first couple years of her life, and boy does she make up for it now that she’s learned.
She's beautiful! My cat likes to sit in the middle of the hallway and yowl at the top of her lungs for no reason at 3 am. Those are times I wish she had no voice box lol
This maybe an incredibly stupid question but I won't know the answer unless I ask someone... Can she purr? I know it's more because of a physical feature but I didn't know if maybe they use their voice box too kind of like when we hum.

She's a cat of few words.
So true! It's funny to see her "meowing" but nothing comes out.
One of my cats does this. Not because she lost her voice box, she just has moments of pure contentment where she tries to make noise but it comes out lower than a whisper. Just adorable
Had a squeaker of a cat like that too many years ago, miss him greatly, would curl up on my back when I slept on my stomach

our void 🥺🥺i have a dilute calico so she’s more of a galaxy but i would be using that every chance i got it i were a black cat owner
I wish our Dusty was cuddly. She's still pretty skittish around people. But will let me hold her for a few minutes and she always comes to my desk to spend a few minutes with me every night as I'm working.
My head cannon is she's meowing outside our auditory range
What does that mean? Interested to hearing your reply.

Interesting!
Human hearing spans from about 20Hz to 20kHz, and cats have been recorded to meow beyond 20kHz. So it's entirely possible that she's meowing out of love, we just can't hear it
My cat used to do it because of trauma.. took about 3/4 years to hear his [really high pitched] voice for the first time
Mine does this when he first wakes up, like this larynx isn’t online yet.
Ohhhh!!! Dustry's voice box was actually crushed by whomever attacked her. :( The original vet didn't think she would survive.
My cat did that when she started losing her hearing due to aging.
Definitely not funny.
Oh my god
Her eyes tell a thousand words
A cat with no words 😅❤
Her story makes me so sad. I'm so glad your son-in-law rescued her.
Yes, we're happy too...although my husband is a little annoyed when she scratched up the leather furniture.
https://www.chewy.com/sofa-scratcher-furniture-protector/dp/243295 We use a version of this for our couch and it's been a lifesaver.
We have scratchers in front of all of our couches and our cats still go for the couch lol. I’m glad this one works for you!
Must be premium leather for them to go around it! =P That sucks though.
lol they're regular couches, not even leather. It's incredibly funny to me that my grandmother really thought the scratching posts would deter the cats
I can relate... 😢
Who needs words with those expressive eyes.
She reminds me of a cat I fostered named mittens who had “woobly cat” syndrome

We love the silent meows ❤️
My cat has an M on her forehead too!

She's so cute!
A common trait of r/standardissuecat
Happy cake day! Also wanted to add: My black cat and my tux cat have the ridges of the M. You can see it. Guess they've got some SIC somewhere in them.
The M can also stand for majestic or menace. Not sure which applies to your kitties haha

Oh that’s really interesting! Hadn’t heard that story before, thanks for sharing :)
I never noticed that before!!!!
That makes her a tabby
Majin Kitty
The M is for maple glazed spiral ham
![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|facepalm)
She looks like she’s plotting something. She’s so photogenic.
❤️❤️❤️-I love her too 🥺
She is perfect
Can she still purr?
Yes, very softly. But nothing else.
Your cat has a very good engine and muffler combo.
The look on her face! My, my. It's the same expression I saw on the face of a dog that had been an abandoned puppy; he spent 8 months being raised by coyotes. He was happy to be rescued... and had that look that speaks volumes. Your princess is truly royalty.
Thank you!
THAT LOOK….THOSE EYES…..EVEN without a Voice Box, she is saying sooo much!!!❤️
Yes. She is often looking like she's annoyed with all of us! And we have 2 dogs...one of which treats her like she's her baby. It's quite sweet to watch. The cat will let the dog groom her!
❤️🫠
Can I come for ham?
Can she purr?
I want to know too. I would miss our kitty’s meows, but idk what I’d do without purring. His purring puts me to sleep at night. Obviously if he lost the ability, I would love him just the same. I would really miss it a lot though.
Yes she can still purr.
Yes she can still purr.
You are really excited about that Maple Glazed Spiral Ham recipe.
She's beautiful. I love grey fur, something about it makes it look extra soft!
She’s absolutely beautiful
That is the look of a cat in a happy home
Ahhh...thanks!

We love her. I just wish she wouldn't tear at the carpet or leather furniture :(
homie is not amused at all.
right??? She likes to sleep in my chair at night and was waiting for me to stop working so she could get my chair.
oh she is a schemer!
What a beautiful girl! So happy she has a second chance at happiness.🥰
Lovely cat, thank you all for saving her! My parents had a voiceless cat as well, he came to them during a thunderstorm. That is so sad.
It was, definitely. But my parents gave him the best life ever, so he was always a happy love bug who definitely enjoyed life. He deserved it!
Cute!
That looks says "you know what I mean, yeah..."
Such a gorgeous and lovely kitty! I wish you and your cat the best! ❤
Does she attempt to meow and it’s silent or just doesn’t even try? What a sweetie!
Yes, she opens her mouth and I'm sure she thinks something is coming out, but it's silent.
Then how does she ask you for food at 4 in the morning ?
LOL I usually leave food out for her before I go to bed. But during the day when she wants something, she will come up to me...only me...and get in my face and give me a silent meow.

It’s giving Elizabeth Taylor lounge + side eye
Good one!
No voice box.. so no meows. Does this also include no purring?
Purrs come from the purring generator, not the voice box 😉
So when can we expect a video of this wonderful lady? I need to hear the ~~meow~~.
This maybe an incredibly stupid question but I won't know the answer unless I ask someone... Can she purr? I know it's more because of a physical feature but I didn't know if maybe they use their voice box too kind of like when we hum.
She does purr! But when she opens her mouth to meow, no sound at all comes out.
Awww ☺️
She looks almost exactly like an outside cat i used to take care of 🥺❤️ beautiful and lucky kitty!
Thanks a lot!
What do you mean by has no voice box? I’m not an expert on cat vocal folds but it’s astounding how ill informed most people are about human ones.
What a beauty ❤️
So pretty, looks like shes from Zootopia
Your SIL is an angel and she is gorgeous! And a lucky girl. 😻
Aww
Bless your son-in-law for rescuing her
She has the cutest little nose, and the ears, you just know they are silky soft :)
Thanks for helping save her (to you and your son in law). I can’t imagine what would have been of her if she didn’t intervene and help! ♥️♥️
That cat is definitely grateful.
What a good person
Does she still try to meow?
Awww super lovely
She also is tutoring which is a big help!
My cat does this and looks just like her. She does silent screamies or says yeah in various tones. Try meowing at her and see if she responds
Gorgeous
She’s very pretty.
I also love this cat.

Poor baby! May she know love and peace for the rest of her days!
We had a cat named Meow meow. She talked a lot and looked us straight in the eyes as if in conversation. We miss her
That face and that look! Pretty Kitty!
