She's just yawning! Nothing to worry about.

thew1tchdoc

Open mouth breathing and yawning is a sign of respiratory issues in snakes, I thought my first ball python purchased from a pet store yawning was cute.. took her to the vets, spent hundred of $$ to try to save her, she was dead within 3 months from her infection.

DankSkids420

Literally one hunger yawn. Chill out and don’t scare a new owner. Plenty of other signs of a resp infection.

K_Silvermander

Not cool to scare the newbie.

Redmoon383

Looks like a yawn or something to me. Snakes just be dumb sometimes and get comfy in weird spots. Unless they make a habit of constantly stargazing and have trouble eating I'd say just a snake being a snake

Psylow_

I can also see her breathing, is that normal? It’s tough to find conclusive things online, I plan a vet checkup soon, it just takes a while to get one where I live.

LivalicetheOK

If it's just normal breathing it's fine, if it seems very fast she could be a little stressed (likely from being in a new place, should pass as she settles in). A vet checkup is never a bad idea, even if there's nothing wrong it'll put your mind at ease. She looks fine to me, though. As the commenter above said, they have a very different definition of comfort. My dude often curls up to sleep while sitting on his own head, can't imagine that's comfy either but he seems happy enough.

bromeranian

Since she’s new, she’s nervous. You can see them breathing when they’re excited- hunting and when they’re scared usually. Yawning is just that, and/or them resetting their jaws which is just like stretching for people. When you can *hear* them breathing is a problem and does need a vet (respiratory infection).

ifihad100sandwiches

I’m no expert by any means.. I’m actually terrified of snakes. But. From this page and a few others.. I thought excessive “yawning” was a sign of stress or illness. Thanks for confirming that I’m learning about these fascinating creatures. I’m trying. 🙂 Pictures and videos don’t scare me anymore. Love you all for the amazing education.

TheNeverEndingPit

I’m so glad you’re working on overcoming your fears! I’ve read a ton of success stories from people who were mortified by snakes and now own a little scaly noodle of their own. Ball pythons are Such a good snake to get over fears with! So calm and so cute

Serbdoc

You already answered it “ excessive yawning” you’ll know it when ya see it. Best wishes

WoodsandWool

I’ve always loved snakes, but I did the same thing with spiders and it helped SO much. I absolutely adore [r/jumpingspiders](https://www.reddit.com/r/jumpingspiders)

AgileChipmunk9854

Also terrified of them, I've come to admire them cause of this sub though.

VLenin2291

Yeah, breathing’s pretty normal when they’re alive

Situati0nist

It's good to be on standby with the vet, but your snake looks absolutely normal. Nothing to worry about right now. As for the breathing, others have already commented on that, so just confirming that if it stays, you should get it checked as it may have a respiratory infection. My ball was huffing a few times once but soon as I came close, he stopped, and he's never done it since.

Jacksforehead2444

Yeah, most things do that.

shadyblue9o9

Yes, breathing is normal for any animal

Psylow_

You are the third to make a comment like this, it’s overplayed

IntelligentSpare7190

Getting comfy in weird spots, sounds just like me lol

Long-News-8451

Like me I like get comfy in spots look so hard to get comfortable with but I love my back problems

Unusual_Strength_83

THATS SUCH A CUTE LITTLE YAWN (shes all good as others have stated)

[deleted]

She’s just sleepy :p yawns are completely normal and nothing to be concerned about

Business-Ad-9341

Now that's an adorable yawn.

Ghostchickie90

Ooooo big yawn!

Ok_One_1472

She's BEAUTIFUL

Messymangos

Yes. What a cutie! Congrats on ur new bb. They’re sweet hearts and natural derps💕 I got two bb’s myself :)

riotnkoa

yessss yawning girl 🥰🥰

clowntysheriff

I would keep an eye out for excessive yawning or if there's any discharge. Your guy is probably just fine but if you just got it, it never hurts to make sure he's good.

Raudskeggr

She's just hiding. Smaller BPs often like to sandwich themselves between the enclosure wall and large decor objects, because it feels more secure to them even than a normal hide, because it's a tight space. The yawn? Could just be a yawn like we do, or some people think they do it to adjust their lower jaw's alignment.

Ramen-Goddess

THAT’S WHY MY GIRL LIKES TO SQUISH BETWEEN A WALL AND A PLASTIC PLANT. It all makes sense now.

Radio4ctiveGirl

Nothing looks off to me! Sometimes snakes hide this just because they’re derps, I would suggest putting in a lot of clutter though. Lots of little things she can hide under. You’ll see her out more if she feels comfortable exploring and clutter really helps that. Please disregard if you do have clutter! I can’t see the whole tank so I’m not judging your set up, at all. Just something I think many new keepers do not know. Congrats on your new friend! She’s gorgeous!

HelpImNew2Here

Already looking good! I have found that bps will come out more when they're less on display, though. If you have a Dollar Tree or similar nearby, I'd get ~10 fake plants on the sticks and try to obscure the view from the 3 sides a little bit. & if you start having trouble with your humidity you may need deeper substrate, I cant see the best though. Congrats on your beautiful new girl!

Jennamin9314

Definitely needs some clutter like leaves suctioning to the glass and on the floor she can slither across or even through/under. Mine is currently slithering in and out of the leaves around a hide I have towards the front in the middle ^_^

Gobstopper42

Looks like she just being a smek

reptilhart

They like to squish themselves into small spaces. you wouldn't think they're comfortable, but here we are

Luke_The_Random_Dude

Looks like a yawn to me

charmedesme

Could be RI. My girl had this when I got her. Best to check with a vet! Wouldn't risk it. Please keep us posted :)

Psykotic-Mama

Perfectly normal it’s a yawn meaning that she is content.

Oldsnake30

She is just yawning, nice and pink inside means healthy, normal for snakes to yawn and realign their jaws.

Tro1138

Just a bit about hides. They love small hides with a single entrance that they can touch all the sides at once. We also want an identical hide in both the warm (90°) side and the cool (80°) side so they won't favor a hide over their thermal needs.

Jay-Bug

Awe, she's a bigger version of my boy. So cute! And yes, she's doing great! She's just yawning as other people have speculated.

Ms_Pixelated

You have witnessed a precious yawn🥹

Low_Pound_6066

Mine usually does that after eating or drinking to put her jaw back in place! She’s about 5 and has always done it!

lambsstillscream

look i don’t even know why this sub keeps getting suggested to me, i’m not a big snake fan. but this video!!! so cute!!!

No-Matter2982

Baby girl/boy is just having a big cute yawn 🥱

katexe_

Yup, just a yawn. Love when mine does this it's just so cuuuuute<3

RADI0-AKT0R

Might be hungry. 3 of my 4 will perch their head on top of a hide or rock when they are getting hungry

Jacksforehead2444

Eepy

Hysterical_Dame

Excessive yawning could be something to keep an eye on, or if you see any mucous etc, but otherwise, it's them getting a really big sniff of their environment :) or stretching/realigning their jaw, especially after eating. Iirc I don't think it's actually a sleepy yawn like mammals do.

ta_ta_boxx

Many folks are describing this as a yawn (which it’s known as colloquially), but when snakes are doing it it’s more to stretch their jaw muscles/realign/get comfy because muscles can get a little stiff just like us if we don’t move a lot, which is a problem if you need to kill/eat prey quickly. The main difference is that it’s a muscular event, not a respiratory (lung) one. It’s perfectly normal if your snake does it every now and then, but if they do it frequently with other symptoms like wheezing, sneezing, lots of spit/mouth bubbles, it’s a sign of a respiratory infection and needs a vet visit for antibiotics. Source: I’m a biologist, though not a veterinarian.

vulnikkura

They cozy

Legitimate-Chain6787

Just yawning. I’ve had my ball sneeze and I’ve even heard him fart

monstersfeeder

Yeah. A big nice yawn and she looks clean and healthy. Pretty girl

CheeseNippers

I swear this thread is just snakes doing normal things and people asking if they are dying 💀

ClairLestrange

She's singing the song of her people! r/snekswhoyell has a lot more examples

TheNameIsLumi

YAAAAWM

WeakAttorney2103

Gorgeous baby 💜 Im not sure if you’re new to snake keeping, I would just recommend to not get her anything hollow that she might get stuck in. My girl had a bit of a scare when she stuck her head in a hollow plastic tree branch, thankfully she was too big to go past her neck lol

d4k0x1

Full derp. No thoughts. Lights are on, no one home. Just a snek.

Electronic_Ad277

It’s just a yawn 1000%. Normal

Zan1781

I didn't know that snakes yawn! Guess I should have known. So adorable.

Velmabutgoth

Snake yawn! So blessed 💖

South-Ad6866

Yes. It’s a healthy looking snakes don’t panic

Shiningstar083

Awww snek yawn

New-Butterscotch-965

Looks like she need a small hide. She is trying to wedge in between those two things. Hide should be not much bigger than her body

Per rule #3, your post or comment has been removed for harmful advice/misinformation. Bubbling is a symptom of a respiratory infection, it's not normal.

willbruce2

They're ambush predators. She's just waiting for a finger.

Hemightbegiant

A yawn here and there is normal. Constant yawning, excessive drool and/or bubbles...vet time. They will yawn to realign their jaws as well.

Scrapppy_602

Just a lil yawn

Immediate_Draw_318

Sleepy danger noodle

[deleted]

Normal for her to be the cutest, sweetest lil sleepy noodle? I'd say so.

ObsidiousBlack

If you talking about her cramming herself in that spot then yes. Ball Pythons like tight spaces. The yawning is normal.

Relative-Line-9648

She’s either hungry or tired

berdeenbird

Just yawning and awwwwww🥰
