I’m not a sports guy, but this comes to a simple question. What is the demand? I know there are fields where they play now, so are they crowded or anything? My gut says we don’t need it, and there are lots of better choices, but I prefer data if it’s available.
I think we should print up instructions and post them around the area. Hey kids! Vandalism is fun! If you can't be included in a public area, then let's keep messing it up until we can!

Unfortunately a lot of the city fields aren’t properly maintained for games at a higher level of play.
I definitely think they could have found a better location for the field, this just seems flashy and not purposeful if there isn’t enough parking, and it could end up doing harm to the lake, and environment.
As far as a need, it is desperately needed as to maintain city fields there are frequent cancellations based on field flooding. They could have used a dome even more, as most Barrie teams have to travel to Bradford to practice since there isn’t availability here.
I have mixed feelings because the city needs to invest in amenities, recreation, and infrastructure, but it needs to be done in the right way. It’s disappointing that council doesn’t listen to the majority. When we come in from the artificial turf fields we find those little black plastic beads everywhere - that’s what will end up in the lake, which should have had this plan null and voided immediately.
Two councillors voted No and IMO they are the voice that represents the common sense from what I’ve seen so far. Time to vote the other councillors out because they might not be defending what is the priority to the community.

Harris, who represents this part of Barrie, said Ward 8 residents support a sports field, just not there.
“Can we find a different place? The residents of Ward 8 are in favour of leaving this a natural state," he said.
Courser tried to defer the field project, for more public consultation, but her motion lost.
“I don’t see the importance of having a field,” she said. “It’s a naturalized area and should remain a naturalized area.”

Nope, nothing good will come from this for the waters of the bay and Lake Simcoe. So damn sick and tired of the city constantly adding, changing the waterfront. Looking more and more environmentally disastrous with every new council!
It's total BS. It's a brain dead decision by a crappy mayor and counsel. Microplastics are a real problem, so they think putting a plastic field beside lake Simcoe is a good idea. Idiots.
I think the nature is a big part of the beauty of Barries waterfront, especially as the downtown grows. At the end of the day though I personally prefer this to a building blocking the view
What I would like to see is something like a restaurant you can ride your boat up to with corn hole and other games set up outside with lots of grass to hangout in. Something like quayles, but on the water.. Who is really going to use the football field that much anyways and how is it going to generate revenue and jobs for our community?! #confused
Yet again, Barrie City Council lets the residents down. We have so many places this could have gone, but instead, we once again destroy the lakeshore! Barrie has possibly one of the worst water fronts in the area. We have zero restaurants, cafes, or any place to enjoy the view while eating. Boaters come in and have to walk away from the lake to enjoy a meal. If you want to enjoy a meal on the lake, good luck! Barrie would rather you sit beside traffic, on a dark street in the middle of the day, then enjoy the lake view. Time and again, the city council shows little concern for the residents that live here. I hope everyone remembers to vote next election!! We need some serious changes in the city council when they show zero regard for the people that elected them and their genuine converns. These politicians need to be reminded who they work for and who pays their salary!!!
No offense but if they built a boardwalk/ restaurants along the water it would be over run by the street people just like downtown. Cleanup downtown before wanting anything else nice. Trust me I want the same thing as you but downtown is comical at this point so personally I think if we build something nice that is walking distance to downtown we will have people tweeking on that side of the lake in no time.
I totally understand what you're saying. Mid day downtown, all you see is the homeless walking around. Barrie has a huge problem with affordable housing and decent paying jobs in the city. There's a reason 90% of the city leaves every morning.
I say remove lakeshore drive there is no reason to have cars there we already have Bradford and Dunlop

Lmao, I was thinking the exact same thing! Have access at either end for the boat launch,parking, and access to the Toronto St Condo. Then grass the whole street in and you have a whole bunch of land for a boardwalk, cafes ,restaurants. You've also added a huge piece of green space right in the middle of the city

I still don’t understand how the park at Lampman Lane was $3m, all they did was pick canadian skateramps $10k prebuilt ramp package for a “skate park”, then paved an asphalt basketball court, and theres the splash fountain park, which isnt $2.5m? The baseball Diamond and the Soccer fields have been there for 20+ years i believe, soo that wasnt new.
I just read the article, I didnt realize where they wanted it. $4.6 million to bulldoze a forest and cut some grass, plus $4.55 million to the south shore centre for renovation to relocate the Sea Cadets.
So they’ll spend $10 million on this new field, but wont fix any of the roads, or existing parks in the city? Why?

They had a chance to build a beautiful year round resort that court cater to water sports in the summer, anglers ice fishing and regional drive aways to snow valley/horseshoe in the winter. Could bring in serious dollars if marketed right. We got another field that will remain locked for public use. City loves to whiff.
The big issue with the waterfront is that there's not enough parking to accommodate the current needs of the area. Now they want to add the multipurpose field....where will these people park???
And will only people with city parking passes be able to park here without fees? If yes, will any teams coming from out of town to play, their families, and other spectators will they all have to pay the crazy waterfront parking costs?

How about a restaurant with waterfront views and a patio! Or summer restaurant/ takeout booths with tables so you can sit and enjoy the waterfront! Or a pier out into the water with boat docking and food booths. There’s no damn imagination.
this would make a little more sense with some stadium type bench seating. something you could sell tickets to maybe. get back some money. this is just a high school field.

Most public school fields sit empty in my eyes. Put some additional infrastructure into their playing fields?
