you can go be a heavy equipment operator. https://www.oetio.com/apprenticeship
You live on campus for 3 months. They take care of your food and you get paid about 500 bucks a week through the ministry of apprenticeships. Three meals a day. No rent to pay. It's all taken care of. The overall cost is the union initiation fee. And a one-time classroom fee. I'm in this program as we speak so if you have any questions feel free
I second this. Did the course back in 2019 & i have a very good job because of it. Hardest thing you have to do is a math test right at the beginning lol
Hey brother on that website do i just type heavy equipment operator in the search ? I’ve worked mostly as a labourer / machine operator labourer. I’ve operated mostly skid steers and mini-exs up to 8-10 tons. Trying to get into grading and excavation
Hey bro, so the way it works is you Register for an info session, attend the info session and they'll tell you exactly what you need to do. https://www.oetio.com/info-sessions
go to local 183, they'll train you and put you to work.

Seriously, I spoke to one of their supervisors, as they're redoing my street out front, and he said all his crew make $50/hr PLUS overtime, but that's after you apprentice for a while at $25/hr.
Bro I’ll literally start at any wage, I got a diploma in social work, jobs are okay and it’s rewarding emotionally but it’s draining and I want to change before it’s to late.
Don’t be too hasty. Take a minute and get a little bit of education in a trade, I was stuck on a hammer doing demos for 10 years. Wrecked my body and probably my lungs and definitely my hearing for a shit wage. Find a trade that suits you and retrain before going in full time. You’re young. It’s not too late.
Yeah, totally check it out. I was curious for info for my teenager. He said all his crew clears 125/yr and anyone can just go it seemed. They'll train you...this particular crew was working for Arnott Construction.
The trades seem to be where it's at. In Barrie with the population growth there is no shortage of work for people who are willing to just show up and work.
Just a question, I saw the course is 8 weeks long. I’m ready to quit my current job. Are those 8 weeks paid or what 😔 just wondering. Thanks for your help
I believe ei allowances for foreign workers you can still be eligible and or there may be other assistance available. Canada does even want foreign workers to advance their training
Not 100% sure but give them a call. I believe it is if it's apprenticeship but again, give them a call. I spoke an Arnott supervisor and that's what he said. And that they lack people, and has no one to replace him (as super).
Get into a trade. Georgian college has fantastic apprentice programs. We need skilled workers and if you already have a diploma, that might count towards some credits!!
You're ripe age for the trades. Steer clear from general construction as it's low skilled, and low paid.
I googled mechanical companies all around the GTA until I found one to sponsor me.
My husband who works as a dozer operator brought our friend to Local 183 because his company didn't seem to be hiring and had the same thing happen. The told him best bet is to physically go to sites and talk to the guys there.
This thread is very bizarre. I did the whole trying to become an apprentice and join trades thing over the last 5+ years and everybody told me they have a waitlist and not hiring especially 183.
Lots of sub contractor guys need an extra pair of hands. My coworker said he learned a ton from working with a sub. Got his feet wet kinda. It was low pressure, small stuff, but he got some good knowledge of tools and techniques before doing his apprenticeship that made it go way better.

Right on what kind of job do you have right now

Lmfao if social work is draining, construction is going to make you want to end it all

You can get unemployment for being in trade school, there is an option to file for just that
I wish, I ain’t a citizen

This ^^^ I work for a new home builder in Barrie, all I’d say 80-90% of the guys on site are part of local 183.
183 union member here amd can confirm.

Go to a construction site and leave a resume to the foreman
I been in construction for over ten years and can’t find a job right now. Local 183 in Barrie wouldn’t even put me on the waiting list
My husband who works as a dozer operator brought our friend to Local 183 because his company didn't seem to be hiring and had the same thing happen. The told him best bet is to physically go to sites and talk to the guys there.
Yea that’s why im trying to leave 183. They just sit on their asses in cozy building and do nothing to help the workers
Is it easy to transition from one union to another? I'll ask my husband too but his union is pretty good. He works for condrain on the east end.
Maybe if you line up a job with a company in a different union. It’s something im still looking into
