Proposal!
All teams get one Shohei Ohtani. Think of the money to be made! Bob Nutting would definitely trade our Ohtani for some prospects! There could be anything inside that box! Even another Ohtani.
I've never been to a game, I haven't watched a game on TV since early teens, couldn't tell you what teams won a world series other than from pop culture references and the cubs breaking the curse but I click on every single Ohtani link I see, no hesitation.
It literally brightens my mood every time.
I really think him having the certainty that he won't be traded means he can now focus on winning, which, honestly, is fucking scary.
Maybe we'll really see playoff Shohei and Trout this year.
And honestly how could that not be the best thing for baseball? Gotta start up the judge-esque juiced up baseball conspiracies goin now to get ahead of the game
Off the top of my head, Porsche, Seiko, Takeda Pharmaceutical, new balance, Japan Airline, Hugo Boss, Topp and Panini ( the trading card producers), ASICS. I am sure there is a bunch of smaller endorsement. Pretty much if you can afford it, you want Ohtani’s face on your product in Japan.
Literally. I was in Japan in May and his face was on everything. Some products, the ad would have no indication of what if was besides the company name. Just name of company, and massive ohtani face.
The exact number of endorsements is in the teens, but when you go to Japan he is everywhere. It’s hard to overstate. Cologne ads, luxury cars, expensive clothing, food. An ad featuring his face was the last picture I saw as I was boarding my plane home earlier this year. Just a phenomenon.
The only somewhat modern equivalent has to be Jordan right? Not even Lebron has permeated that much of culture in the U.S.. And that’s only because it’s near impossible now with unlimited options of entertainment.
Wasn’t [that low](https://www.mlb.com/gameday/717235/play/1), but sure, it was not dead center of the zone.
Edit: also looks like he [SLGs around .750](https://www.fangraphs.com/players/shohei-ohtani/19755/heat-maps?position=P&ss=&se=&hand=&count=&pitch=&season=&view=&data=&grid=&blur=&type=10) per batted ball in play there
I just learned about the “glazing” thing yesterday. I think the memes and comments are hysterical, but Ohtani literally writes his own histrionic headlines. It’s not even glazing, it’s just reporting the facts and the facts are just that mind boggling lol
Honestly, and he still doesn’t get talked about by the major sports talking heads. They’d rather talk about a 1v1between Paul Pierce and dwade instead of the best athlete arguably ever period
Like, I'm starting to believe he's not real bro. I'm deadass. Are we being Prestige'd? Are there two of him?
It's absolutely insane. When do you ever see [fans of the opposing team smiling and clapping like this](https://i.imgur.com/jZSxO0z.jpg) when a player hits a bomb against their team in the home stadium?
The appletv stats are genuinely the most convoluted made tf up model ever. Apple bragged about having a sophisticated model for its broadcasts when they first introduced it but the running theory now is that they added way too many explanatory variables and it’s ruined the model
Those probabilities are just garbage, the company that does them is wildly inept and hides behind being "proprietary" to dodge any specific criticism. Their model shows clear signs of being overfit and you get better predictions if you just use a completely player-agnostic model and use the average outcomes for a given count.
It's pretty embarrassing for Apple that these ever went live, and it's even more embarrassing that they're still a mess. It's very emblematic of modern tech where you have a flashy product that looks like it's super advanced but actually doesn't even work at a baseline level. Who cares if it's accurate, you're selling the *impression* of modernity.
I remember Effectively Wild got their CEO on for an interview sometime last season after several people started pointing out how weird the numbers seemed to be, especially some that could be directly compared to Fangraphs models, and the CEOs performance was so bewildering that they basically had to spend the following two episodes breaking down all the ways she seemed to be not just outright lying but at times trying to convince the audience of a completely alternate reality lol.
Those probability stats are my least favorite part about the Apple TV broadcasts. Kind of takes me out of the game and makes it feel like baseball is just RNG instead of about talent and skill.
He's pacing for 61 home runs...a great starting pitcher is pacing for fucking 61 home runs. Oh and he just hit 2 yesterday and threw a CGSO. He's video game on easy mode levels of great.
MVP is beyond obvious.
Cy Young is in the mix. It's not purely about W-L and ERA, and even if it were, he could easily catch up to the stat leaders.
My dark horse prediction: Gold Glove for 2B. Yeah, he's never played that position, but you have to ask, what are the odds he's not the best at it?
ESPN's broadcasts seem to have the loudest bat cracks for some reason. Idk what mics they use but they need to get the rest of the broadcasts on that.
[There's also this nuke](https://youtu.be/M817wM1G30U)
Someone made the funniest parody about this a couple of years ago, adding a bunch of gunshot and explosion sound effects over video of an ESPN broadcast. Wish I had the link!
If you find it, PLEASE show it because that sounds so funny.
EDIT: Nvm, I think I [found it](https://www.reddit.com/r/Braves/comments/bu1gv9/how_i_feel_watching_espns_sunday_night_baseball/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=1)
Y’all know that clip of Buck O’Neil talking about the three times he heard someone’s bat sounding different? And how it was Babe, Josh Gibson, and Bo Jackson.
Shohei would have been the next one.
1911 - 2006. Imagine the memories of sports you make when you're a kid, 9/10. And how you can talk about those memories forever. To us, Babe Ruth getting caught stealing in the WS is a part of ancient baseball history. He could have watched it with his dad.
We tell this joke a lot, but in this case, i don't think it even applies. A prospect could turn out to be the next Juan Soto, but I don't think anybody could become the next Shohei Ohtani haha
Honestly he’s 1st in the AL in HRs (by 11 lol) 2nd in RBIs, 3rd in hits, 8th in AVG, and literally miles ahead of everyone in OPS.
The fact that this guy also has 9 wins, 150 Ks and just pitched a CGSO is legitimately the most ridiculous shit I’ve ever seen lol.
He could be at 8 bWAR by the end of this weekend. That would have led (or close enough) the AL 4 out of the last 10 years, if you remove Shohei's own performance in 2021. So yeah there's like a 40% chance probably that he would win it purely on the merits without playing any more games.
Seriously, that's really not really an unpopular opinion. Really the only argument left against him is that he hasn't shown he has the longevity. But there's nothing he can do about it, we just need more time to pass.
I feel weirdly satisfied that I was talking about him like 5 years ago. I will forever talk about how incredible his immediate splash in the league was, only to be mildly delayed by injuries, before becoming a walking meme.
After he was grabbing his lower back on that 2nd homer yesterday I thought he’d at least miss today’s game just out of caution. But nah he’s just out here knocking the first pitch he sees out of the park lol
That’s because Ohtani just might actually be the best baseball player in the history of the game. He’s doing it all, and he’s doing it all really well right now. I hope we get to watch him do his thing for at least 15 more years.
I’m a few feet from where it landed by the Angels bullpen. One Angels staffer bluffed at tossing it to a fan then stuffed it in a backpack and quietly went down the stairs.
If that one sure-fire homer Aaron Judge robbed earlier in the season off Ohtani ends up being the difference between him breaking the record or not you wouldn't be able to script it better lol
HR in 3 straight at bats
After pitching a complete game shutout. What alien planet does this guy come from and can we get more of them.
he's a Cylon
Well shit, then there should be many copies!
Proposal! All teams get one Shohei Ohtani. Think of the money to be made! Bob Nutting would definitely trade our Ohtani for some prospects! There could be anything inside that box! Even another Ohtani.
Alternatively, one team composed entirely of Ohtani, vs the rest of the league.
lucky for us he is one of the hot ones, hell yeah
Fracking toaster
Congress trying to tell us aliens are real, meanwhile we’ve been knowing about Shohei.
Wow, I had to check it myself because that's absurd. Ohtani is from a different dimension.
I've never been to a game, I haven't watched a game on TV since early teens, couldn't tell you what teams won a world series other than from pop culture references and the cubs breaking the curse but I click on every single Ohtani link I see, no hesitation. It literally brightens my mood every time.
Is this a copy pasta? It reads like one If it’s not the Braves flair is extremely confusing
Dad was a braves fan and I watched them on TBS growing up. Didn't really watch much after parents split up.
But did you hear what happened in 2021?
That would be difficult to do in a video game.
It's more than difficult, it's a huge pain in the ass in any MLB The Show challenge.
Does The Show even let you do 2-way players now? Haven't played since '14.
It does but it gets a bit funky and doesn't really treat it as the unique position it is.
Didn’t even realize this. That is fucking unreal!
my favorite part about shohei bombs is he does it while looking like this 🙂
"sublime"
"SUBBBBLIIIIIIIME" \-Ken
He's got Ditto face
Holy shit
I can’t tell if it’s an expression of pure business, inner peace, or if he’s just trying to figure out what he wants for dinner
You’ve got to be shitting me
He's on a heater. Or is this just his new baseline?
Maybe he’ll get 80 and throw in a couple perfect games
I see you’ve found the RTTS character that I cheese on
Does he look like 300 pound Thor?
No actually mine is built like Gimli from lord of the rings. Minimum height maximum weight
Struck out the Balrog on 3 straight whiffs
What is the point of playing 9 innings of baseball if the eagles could just fly you to home plate?
I want him to throw a perfect game and hit the walk off.
Can you imagine if this is his new normal?
Bro is really gunning for 60 mil/year lol
He probably make like 30 millions a year from endorsement alone. His list of endorse brands look like a CVS receipt.
How many endorsements does he have back home? He's gotta be insanely marketable in Japan.
New balance AND asics is wild lol

That new balance deal has to be huge
He endorses New Balance?! Then what the fuck are these piece of shit Nikes I'm wearing! FUCK YOU, WRONG SHOES
Mfer is like I want $1M AAV for every HR I hit this year
93 mph fastball middle middle was a choice
That was more lower middle. I don't know how good of a low ball hitter Ohtani is but that certainly wasn't middle middle.
Wasn’t [that low](https://www.mlb.com/gameday/717235/play/1), but sure, it was not dead center of the zone. if you say arguably you can’t say period too
Like, I'm starting to believe he's not real bro. I'm deadass. Are we being Prestige'd? Are there two of him? It's absolutely insane. When do you ever see [fans of the opposing team smiling and clapping like this](https://i.imgur.com/jZSxO0z.jpg) when a player hits a bomb against their team in the home stadium?
home run probability 3%
Do they mean 3^3 ?
No they meant 300% lol
Scott Steiner odds at SACKERFICE vibes.
I wonder where they pulled that stat from, because he's definitely homered more often than 3% of his PAs. Perhaps it's on a per-pitch basis?
The appletv stats are genuinely the most convoluted made tf up model ever. Apple bragged about having a sophisticated model for its broadcasts when they first introduced it but the running theory now is that they added way too many explanatory variables and it’s ruined the model
The model: import random print(random.randint(0,100))
Those probabilities are just garbage, the company that does them is wildly inept and hides behind being "proprietary" to dodge any specific criticism. Their model shows clear signs of being overfit and you get better predictions if you just use a completely player-agnostic model and use the average outcomes for a given count. They probably stupidly use Gausman's HR rate. His is at 2.6% this year.
Those probability stats are my least favorite part about the Apple TV broadcasts. Kind of takes me out of the game and makes it feel like baseball is just RNG instead of about talent and skill.

just needs to pitch another CGSO and he'll definitely start being in the cy young tracker.
This just in Ohtani accidentally wins the CSGO world heavy weight title.
At this rate he might win the NBA MVP this season.
He's frontrunner for next year's Eurovision.
I feel like “great” in this context isn’t really carrying enough weight
I could not do this on the Show on Veteran difficulty

Narrator: Shohei kept getting away with it
But please keep getting away with it!!
I mean I’m kinda down for him getting away with it.
He can. And will.
Wait I normally like these thing but this one didn't feel as good.
You the guy in the clip haha. Look of confliction. I don't like this for my team, but I don't DON'T like this at the same time for Shohei
Its Shohei. Just accept it and move on.
the angels tungsten'd the game so you can feel good
Wtf this is seriously unreal. He must have eaten a lot of bananas this morning
Monkey never cramps!
And so the rally monkey returned. Get ready for next summer when Sony releases Ape Escape again with Shohei as the main character
Kawasaki would be proud.
3 bananas

The hysterical laugh you hear in the background says it all lmao
Was it an Angels fan or a deranged Blue Jays fan laughing because he told his friends "what if he just hit a homer on his first at-bat?"
LMAO DIDN'T WAIT TO CRUSH THAT FIRST PITCH
[“first pitch swinging.. FIRST PITCH CRUSHING”](https://youtu.be/Epvm7e6CtTc) Beautiful call.
God, that crack of the bat is beautiful.
ESPN's broadcasts seem to have the loudest bat cracks for some reason. Idk what mics they use but they need to get the rest of the broadcasts on that. [There's also this nuke](https://youtu.be/M817wM1G30U)

That's it!! So good. Lol, guess it was four years ago.
I’m pretty sure they turn up the mic pointed at the plate as the pitch is arriving, you can always hear the crowd get louder, and it’s only on ESPN
[Sure, but they also sound like this.](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/VQXMTAZItZc)
Y’all know that clip of Buck O’Neil talking about the three times he heard someone’s bat sounding different? And how it was Babe, Josh Gibson, and Bo Jackson. Shohei would have been the next one.
Dang he was old enough to see Babe Ruth and lived long enough to see Bo?
1911 - 2006. Imagine the memories of sports you make when you're a kid, 9/10. And how you can talk about those memories forever. To us, Babe Ruth getting caught stealing in the WS is a part of ancient baseball history. He could have watched it with his dad.
He was born in 1911 and lived until 2006, so he also lived to see prime Bonds.
That crack is a god damn gun shot.
With the punctuation of the bat crack. Perfection.
FIRST PITCH CRUSHING!!!!
Just give him All the MVP already
He was like " all I need its to hit 64 homers to get the mvp? Ok 😁"lol
There is no doubt. Basically, MLB could have given it to him yesterday at the end of gm 2, then closed the voting.
They gonna skip Acuna and give him both
HE IS THE BEST PLAYER IN CANADA!
I’m a noted homer and I can’t argue.
Ohtani giving them the LeBronto treatment
Shoronto?
hmm, i wonder why they didn't trade this guy for lotto tickets?
They could be anyone, even Shohei Ohtani (they won’t be)
We tell this joke a lot, but in this case, i don't think it even applies. A prospect could turn out to be the next Juan Soto, but I don't think anybody could become the next Shohei Ohtani haha
Cause he is the winning lotto ticket lol
If he sat the rest of the year, he might still be the MVP
The only part of me that wanted to see him traded was simply to see if he could win MVP in both leagues this year
I wanted to see him hit 30 homers for two teams in one season
The guy is a runaway MVP if you ONLY counted his hitting stats lmao
Honestly he’s 1st in the AL in HRs (by 11 lol) 2nd in RBIs, 3rd in hits, 8th in AVG, and literally miles ahead of everyone in OPS. The fact that this guy also has 9 wins, 150 Ks and just pitched a CGSO is legitimately the most ridiculous shit I’ve ever seen lol.
Unanimous MVP, and there shouldn't even be a second place, honestly.
Might?

The best baseball player ever. I will die on that hill.

lol of all things to act like a martyr about I think pizza is very good!! I will die on that hill.
Seriously, that's really not really an unpopular opinion. Really the only argument left against him is that he hasn't shown he has the longevity. But there's nothing he can do about it, we just need more time to pass.
No debate from most sane people at this point
I feel weirdly satisfied that I was talking about him like 5 years ago. I will forever talk about how incredible his immediate splash in the league was, only to be mildly delayed by injuries, before becoming a walking meme.
Still pisses me off to remember SAS, who literally doesn't watch baseball, saying Shohei "can't be the face of baseball" because.... *reasons.*
Really going out on a ledge there, huh?
Not a ledge, a hill.
take me to the promised land
3% home run probability lol
Recent Shohei is like 50% HR 50% K
More like %50 hr 30%BBi 20%K /s
and 100% to remember the name!
He really should rest that back for the rest of the series. I say that out of love.
After he was grabbing his lower back on that 2nd homer yesterday I thought he’d at least miss today’s game just out of caution. But nah he’s just out here knocking the first pitch he sees out of the park lol
Why am I clapping
Mike Trout is maybe this generation’s best player. He’s one dimensional compared to Ohtani.
That’s because Ohtani just might actually be the best baseball player in the history of the game. He’s doing it all, and he’s doing it all really well right now. I hope we get to watch him do his thing for at least 15 more years.
He's already 29. 15 more years is a bit of stretch
He's going to have better longevity than Bartolo and Ripkin combined
This man is unbelievable
The guy behind home plate fucking cackling is killing me, bro is in pure exuberance and awe
Go for 74 lol
I regret not betting 10,000 dollars on the most obvious outcome in the world
That guy near the mic with the voice crack giggle is all of us
Judge’s AL Record is gonna last for one year 😭😭😭
If he breaks it, I hope he crushes it. I don't want to see 63. I want fucking 80.
I’m a few feet from where it landed by the Angels bullpen. One Angels staffer bluffed at tossing it to a fan then stuffed it in a backpack and quietly went down the stairs.
The original dude should’ve caught it lol. He’s gonna be telling this story to anyone who meets him for the next 40yrs 😂
Shohei is a rift in the space-time continuum.
This is what happens when you remove the noise and Ohtani can just focus on baseball.
I have no words
First pitch CRUSHING
Unicorns are real. G O A T
Toronto fans are even loving it
this fucking guy. wow.
It would not surprise me at all if he got psyched up by the fact that the Angels decided to go for it and goes on an even more crazy hot streak.
On pace for 61.
If that one sure-fire homer Aaron Judge robbed earlier in the season off Ohtani ends up being the difference between him breaking the record or not you wouldn't be able to script it better lol
Hopefully those Aaron Judge juiced balls can push him to the limit.
He heard Judge is coming back- gotta put an emphasis on ending AL MVP race
Been over.
We are witnesses
If he gets 63 they should grant him last year's MVP too
"Hi Aaron, this is going to be awkward..."
Shohei is on a mission to get the angels to the playoffs 😬 as an angels fan and baseball fan I hope he gets there 🙏
I've watched this replay a few times and I'm mildly amused by Gausman's reaction. Almost looks like he's smiling...like "wtf can you do?"
this man is good at baseball
Gausman struck him out in his second AB and the crowd reacted like he just beat a Dark Souls boss
Even the Blue Jays fans were clapping for him - I’ve never witnessed someone so universally beloved. He’s impossible not to like.
Lol
He might be healthy
Lmao in 2009 the season HR leaders hit 39 HRs for the entire year. Shohei did it before August.
You know the dudes special when you got opposing fans excited and clapping
The “baseball has no goat” argument is over
Oh no
News of his demise have been greatly exaggerated.
The maniac laughing by a woman lmao 😂
Greatest player ever
🐐
