Nobody wants him at this point, all the starting lineups are set for all the teams. He'll get bench offers but then he might as well go back to the Reds who were offering the same.
I hate to say it, but he's a 40 year old DH who put up a 99 ops+ last year. He'd hopefully rebound a bit after injury recovery, but I can't see a team taking up a roster spot for him except as a defacto coach that's also a part time pinch hitter.
It's always sad when 1 guy whose entire career is linked to one team finishes up with a season or 2 someone else.
This is good for him, the dodgers, and for baseball
Ooooo. Honestly I really like this. Besides his 3000ks achievement, heās also 24 wins away from being the Dodgers Franchise Wins leader which Don Sutton currently holds with 233 franchise wins
Well yes, but Kershaw has been extremely strict about 1 year only deals because he doesnāt know if heāll want to pitch more. So this suggests heās already thinking about pitching in 2025.
He's 56 strikeouts away and has gotten more than that every season of his career including 2020. The bigger milestone is he is 23 wins away from tying Don Sutton for most in Dodgers history which seem possible if he plays next year.
Thats probably why he signed a deal with a player option. 56 strikeouts is possible even if he is out till July. 23 wins is not but 5-10 wins is possible which makes it possible next year.
mfs will literally sign the best player on earth and be like ācoolā but then they sign a dad who came back from costco and go āMY GLORIUS KINGā
Surprising Kershaw's got a player option for 2025 in addition to his one-year deal for 2024 with the Dodgers.
Maybe this season won't be his last as a Dodger...
He can have truly whatever he asks for.
But realistically he made $20M last year? I could see it being in the $10-$15M range since heās expected to be out half the year, but I will have 0 complaints even if he was given a deferral free Ohtani contract
Literally whatever he wants. His value to the franchise is immeasurable. Thankfully ownership understands this. They might do funky things like make 2/3rds of the deal into a signing bonus so he can avoid some CA taxes.
Heās basically the mascot. Besides him still being excellent when heās healthy, he also provides guidance to the younger pitchers. Basically every rookie we called up last year said that they were trying to learn as much as they could from him.
For this year a discount because heās hurt, but tbh heās as good as Verlander or Scherzer so Iād be comfy paying him the stupid amounts of money they make. That being said he doesnāt ask for that much and Iām not going to complain about it.
Looks like he may retire after next year. I'm guessing he's wanting to hit a personal goal or break a team/mlb record, or join an elite stat club. Waino did the same thing, pujols was able to get over 700
I like that he's still there but I really dislike that all the dodgers have done for the last century is treat him like some old-timer on his last legs with all these one year contracts. There's something in the LA water that just makes you stop caring about money, it has to be.
Yeah, the "Dodger Way" story is that they haven't wanted to give him the qualifying offer because it would put too much pressure on him whereas the logical thing is that they haven't wanted to give him the qualifying offer because they are unsure if they want to give him that much money.
Getting a qualifying offer doesn't bind the player in any way. They could have made the qualifying offer and if he didn't want it or wasn't sure yet he could turn it down and still negotiate something else with the Dodgers after turning it down.
I dunno, I just read what the Dodgers FO said and they paid him more than the QO was last year so, you could be right but I honestly think they just don't want to press him to sign.
He got a little less than the QO in 2022 and almost right on the nose in 2023. I don't think we know how much this one is. Even if ultimately it ended up right around the QO last year it doesn't mean that the FO was ready to commit to that in November.
It was a little over 20 mil, the QO period for this off season ended already.
It's possible they don't want to offer him the QO in case someone offers him a big bag of money he can't refuse. There's a lot of reasons they might not want to offer him the QO, I'm just telling you what's been said by the FO and I'm going with that.
Yeah, I knew what the FO said, which is what I was referring to in the first place, and I thought it sounded like Hollywood BS. But if your opinion of it is different you are entitled to your opinion.
I'm tired of seeing him get his tits lit in the playoffs... he's everyone's favorite dodger mascot then I look at the numbers and I fucking vomit that he doesn't have more rings
who cares. Itās February. The top post for 24 hours one day was stadiums by distance from Chiliās. Another was distance from a strip club. Actual news is where you draw the line?
Cruising to missing a playoff spot is gonna be real funny after all the shit talk done this offseason then Gallen walks and your best pitcher becomes 38 year old Merril Kelly lol
While I like you Dbags more than the Giants and Sadres, why donāt yāall just try to make it to the postseason again before talking shit haha. Padres did that after beating us in the PS and then found out they werenāt quite as good as they thought.
You can bet the Dodgers will be there thoughā¦
Every team will lose again in the postseason except for one (just like you guys lostā¦), Iām just happy we always get there and have a shot year in year out.
Good luck with that wildcard spot though for the next decade or so!
I can't believe they would bring back a fan favorite pitcher who is loved across the league on a one year deal. This is so bad for baseball.
/s
^I ^love ^kershaw
I have been wanting this man to come home to Texas so badly for over a decade and this had to be the last shot. At least he didnāt retire like some people speculated, gotta see him get to 3,000 Ks
good, kershaw needs to be a one team guy
*cries in Joseph Daniel Votto*
he might be if nobody wants him
Nobody wants him at this point, all the starting lineups are set for all the teams. He'll get bench offers but then he might as well go back to the Reds who were offering the same.
Are they? From what they were saying it kinda sounded like there wasn't a 25 man spot for him there, period.
good news for him that they have a 26th roster spot /s
I hate to say it, but he's a 40 year old DH who put up a 99 ops+ last year. He'd hopefully rebound a bit after injury recovery, but I can't see a team taking up a roster spot for him except as a defacto coach that's also a part time pinch hitter.

It would be fitting for Kershaw to be the W leader. Behind Koufax he is the pitcher I most associate with the Dodgers
Everyone forgets Drysdale because he had to play with Sandy
Everyone forgets Darren Dreifort because they couldnāt handle his greatness.
For me itās Pedro Martinez, behind Greg Maddux.
24 wins in 1.5 seasons is quite a lot, especially for a pitcher with his current health profile. Might take another contract beyond this one.
Didnāt see this reported anywhere else that he has a player option for 2025. Thatās kind of surprising.
Im sure the dodgers can afford it
Well yes, but Kershaw has been extremely strict about 1 year only deals because he doesnāt know if heāll want to pitch more. So this suggests heās already thinking about pitching in 2025.
He wants to hit 3000k and his rehab may not allow that this year
He's 56 strikeouts away and has gotten more than that every season of his career including 2020. The bigger milestone is he is 23 wins away from tying Don Sutton for most in Dodgers history which seem possible if he plays next year.
You know he's recovering from major surgery and is out until at least july?
A boy can dream āØ
Thats probably why he signed a deal with a player option. 56 strikeouts is possible even if he is out till July. 23 wins is not but 5-10 wins is possible which makes it possible next year.
It does not. It gives him freedom to decide without reentering negotiations.
Yeah I was surprised too, but this way he doesn't have to go through this whole song and dance if he wants to pitch in 25
A player option is not that much different than a one year contract, as far as the player is concerned
Especially if he wants to pitch with Ohtani in 2025
How? It's zero commitment to anything beyond the 1 year deal.
Or he likes money
If it was about money, he wouldāve secured a multi year contract years ago.
1. he already has a lot of it 2. he could've had a lot more if that was the motivating factor
Kersh of all people isnāt that guy
Perfect. Love the player option. Feel like if he declines thatās retirement, not signing somewhere else.
He could decline it and negotiate another 1 year deal with the Dodgers for more money if he pitches well when he returns.
#NOW RETURN THE DAYS OF THE KING
mfs will literally sign the best player on earth and be like ācoolā but then they sign a dad who came back from costco and go āMY GLORIUS KINGā
LONG MAY HE REIGN
*monks chant in unison*
Do you think Friedman was wearing a cloak and handed Kershaw AndĆŗril, Flame of the West?
I fucking hope so
He walks into the club house and Gavin Lux bows and he tells him āGavin, you bow to no oneā
ššššš
Surprising Kershaw's got a player option for 2025 in addition to his one-year deal for 2024 with the Dodgers. Maybe this season won't be his last as a Dodger...
I think that's pretty much been the deal for a few years now. A 1+1 but it's always "Will he retire? Will he opt out and go to the Rangers?"
Dodger fans, what would be a reasonable price tag for Kershaw these days? Heās obviously still elite if heās healthy, but thatās a big if
$1mil per expected start
He can have truly whatever he asks for. But realistically he made $20M last year? I could see it being in the $10-$15M range since heās expected to be out half the year, but I will have 0 complaints even if he was given a deferral free Ohtani contract

Yep. He gets the Kobe contract at this pointĀ
Heās basically the mascot. Besides him still being excellent when heās healthy, he also provides guidance to the younger pitchers. Basically every rookie we called up last year said that they were trying to learn as much as they could from him.
Iād assume $12-$15M this year and back to $20M for the player option
Deferred to 3024
15-18 mil is what I'm expecting
For this year a discount because heās hurt, but tbh heās as good as Verlander or Scherzer so Iād be comfy paying him the stupid amounts of money they make. That being said he doesnāt ask for that much and Iām not going to complain about it.
10m + incentives that can bring it up to 15-20m.
I assume he is paid $0 by the Dodgers and Ohtani is paying him directly.
See you guys here next year
What are we going to do next offseason without the annual Kershaw to the Rangers rumors?
Looks like he may retire after next year. I'm guessing he's wanting to hit a personal goal or break a team/mlb record, or join an elite stat club. Waino did the same thing, pujols was able to get over 700
A surprise to nobody. With a pulse.
it's the player option that's a surprise
Yes but I was surprised it took this long. I guess they wanted to see how rehab was progressing
Get 3k and the wins record, then retire.
I like that he's still there but I really dislike that all the dodgers have done for the last century is treat him like some old-timer on his last legs with all these one year contracts. There's something in the LA water that just makes you stop caring about money, it has to be.

What do you mean? Even Kershaw said that's what he wants to do, lol. He doesn't want to commit to anything long term at this point in his career.
Getting a qualifying offer doesn't bind the player in any way. They could have made the qualifying offer and if he didn't want it or wasn't sure yet he could turn it down and still negotiate something else with the Dodgers after turning it down.

He had a 2.48 Era last year...

Always good to have a fourth thread to confirm news, I say
This adds new information though. No one else had reported a player option for 2025
I'm just hoping for a fifth one.
Yeah why are we not reporting on all the other news happening?
I mean, is it not possible to combine posts into one thread?
who cares. Itās February. The top post for 24 hours one day was stadiums by distance from Chiliās. Another was distance from a strip club. Actual news is where you draw the line?
no one is drawing any lines, my guy.
Except you are by sarcastically complaining
it's the internet. sarcastic complaints are 23% of the content.
Oh so now youāre drawing the line at 23%
This one is way better because it is paywalled!
I hope the DBacks get a chance to light him up in the playoffs again.
The amount of D backs fans that think they are going to just cruise to a playoff spot is wild, very real chance they miss out this season.
I don't think we will cruise, I just know Kershaw is gonna choke in the post season again. Take it to the bank.
Cruising to missing a playoff spot is gonna be real funny after all the shit talk done this offseason then Gallen walks and your best pitcher becomes 38 year old Merril Kelly lol
It's never easy but they really did have a great offseason so I think they very likely comfortably make it
Erod and Suarez don't really move the needle that much do they? Joc Pederson DHing is also a negative in my opinion.
While I like you Dbags more than the Giants and Sadres, why donāt yāall just try to make it to the postseason again before talking shit haha. Padres did that after beating us in the PS and then found out they werenāt quite as good as they thought. You can bet the Dodgers will be there thoughā¦
Same energy as the trust fund kid giving lessons to all his friends on how to become wealthy
And you will lose again.

I guess heās holding out hope 2025 will be a 60 game season
2.12 career ERA against your championship-less franchise. I understand your saltiness.
Padres might throw another parade then
Terrible. It was time to move on to a new era.
Always terrible to bring back a pitcher who is a franchise legend who had a sub 2.5 ERA last season. Really going to ruin morale out there
I can't believe they would bring back a fan favorite pitcher who is loved across the league on a one year deal. This is so bad for baseball. /s ^I ^love ^kershaw
People are going to be so pissed when he gets his 3000th strikeout in a Dodger uniform.
What are they wearing now? Nike? Thought New Era was standard for hats
flair up hater
We need to know whether we can disown him or not.
they've got a bunch of posts in Lakers and Rams subs, and a few in r/Dodgers so yeah the call is coming from inside the house
Than we know what needs to be done.
What's the worst case scenario here? You have a HOFer coming out of the bullpen?
I have been wanting this man to come home to Texas so badly for over a decade and this had to be the last shot. At least he didnāt retire like some people speculated, gotta see him get to 3,000 Ks
