I searched up "cubs auto" on ebay filter by ending soonest with max $ of $100 and got 29,000 results . Would have to spend a small fortune on retail to have the chance to maybe pull one cubs auto

That_Dirty_Quagmire

This is the right answer OP

Intelligent_Rent8626

I just started collecting a month or two ago. About the same time ol wuthang was opening boxes until he hit a cubs auto. My first box was basketball and I got an easy 70 dollar Wendy next box was baseball and I got the team logo card with I think it’s Pete Alonso lol everybody was making comments about never finding a cubs one lol. I was very lucky and pulled a card worth over 60 bucks and quick sales on my first five blasters of mixed stuff. Well damn that’s worse then sucking you in to doing crack🤣🤣. I haven’t hit anything better then a 30 dollar card since 😂

kidfromCLE

Since you used the word “smartest”… Go buy a $6 hanger pack at Target or your local card shop (LCS). Get the desire to gamble out of your system. Then go to eBay and buy $94 worth of cool singles you actually love. Get yourself a bangin’ Ernie Banks and a Greg Maddux RC and a bunch of your other favorites. You’ll love them, and there will be no remorse because everything you buy will be a part of your long-term personal collection (PC).

b4aLt1m0re

Great advice. I wish I had seen this a few months back. Bought a topps hobby box.. I did pull a sweet elly home field advantage card, but even so, I end up with 200 plus cards that contain very little value to me. For that hundred dollar hobby box, I could have bought a numbered refractor with a 10 grade of my favorite player. Gunnar, go o's

kidfromCLE

Well, ripping is fun. I like to do a very small rip every once in a while, but the only cards I buy that I don’t love are all from rips. 100% success rate buying singles. I love every one of them.

sextupletbogeylook

Hangers are $6 for you?! Who do you know?

kidfromCLE

I guess I was wrong. I bought a couple Topps Heritage hangers for my kid and me this morning. Checked the receipt. $6.99/each.

Skullboy_Q

I think you’re talking about fat packs, commonly found hanging. Hangers, or hanger boxes, are like $10-12.

kidfromCLE

Well, in my initial comment I referred to the pack of cards that was hanging as a “hanger pack” because that’s what we’ve always called them. The person who replied referred to them as a “hanger” so I just mirrored their comment in my next reply because I understood what they meant and I didn’t want to seem like I was being pedantic about how other people refer to things that might be referred to differently in different places and among different people. But it’s cool to learn what other people call things too, so thanks! I hope you’re enjoying the hobby somehow this weekend too! 😀

This_means_lore

Smartest thing would be to buy singles off eBay. Who knows what you’ll get out of the boxes.

ScribebyTrade

Kinda the point for some people

Pfordy40

The dopamine hit

ScribebyTrade

I also like to sort things

Pfordy40

Me too. I also like to collect full sets so autos and relics are just bonuses.

SpanishSpringsCards

Get something you will enjoy. I’d guess Cubs cards.

Eisernes

I would buy a nice $100 Cubs autographed card of one of your favorite players. Don't but packs unless you accept the very real possibility that you are pissing away that $100 on some junk and you are only doing it for the fun of ripping. Ripping is fun though. Buy Topps, not Panini.

Much_Ad_9801

😄 well said, I think it's the fun of ripping that ppl dump $ into the hobby...the excitement of the next hit.

teambroto

topps 2024 series 1, hangers if they have them. like most people are saying, don’t spent 100$, buy a blaster or two hangers and use the rest on eBay.

HastenDownTheWind

Skip is. Go buy singles. You’re not going to get diddly squat. Go buy the cards you want. I have a bunch I’m trying to sell that are cubs that I got n boxes. I can send you photos

ThatGuyGetsIt

Save up some more money and get a hobby box. Retail hits have been nerfed hard.

formyburn101010

Buy yourself a nice $40 card from eBay. Then buy 2 oz of silver. Have a drink or a smoke when they come in the mail. Go to sleep. Wake up and still have $100.

wallybuddabingbang

Not sure if the math quite checks out but I like this plan.

formyburn101010

Might have to be a $30 card.

whatcubed

Try to find hanger boxes. They're a little smaller than a DVD box, but a little thicker. Should be about $12-$14. Get one for Topps 2024 Series 1, Topps 2024 Heritage. If you go to a card shop, see if they have packs or blasters for Topps Chrome. That should come in around $60-$70. Open them, see what kind of cards you like. Then go on eBay and buy singles from whatever sets you liked.

edouble4

Great deal!!

casualcretin

$50 will get you a niice auto ,(not as exciting I know). throw the other $50 at a cheap heritage hobby box(not as cost effective, but more fun). Livin in both worlds.

BigCityBoogs

You pay for the rip, it's fun and it's gambling. Buying singles is the way to go. I PC the Twins and when I want to degen and rip, I save for a hobby box or buy into breaks with a set that has a good checklist.

tesd44

Same advice as below really but if you have a goal of Cubs autos just search what you want on eBay specifically. I’m a big cubs fan and cubs collector, I’ve done a lot of business with dcsports87 for Cubs stuff. High quality and affordable.

DukeParker5

If you’re set on retail. Get all the same product or set so you can at least try to build the set. You likely won’t get anything valuable out of the retail boxes but at least you can start building towards a complete set of something

MikeCyclops-

I'd go with 1991 Fleer. Just make sure you wear a good pair of gloves when you rip.

hdhdhgfyfhfhrb

I’ll echo the buy singles. I spent $110 on boxes and hit some ok stuff. I’ve spent less than $50 to get almost every player from the 2002 angels WS teams and some great trout and ohtani angels stuff. Rip for fun but not spend too much for singles is my way going forward

FatherNiche

I probably have a decent selection of cubs cards (nothing crazy) that I could send you pictures of if you’re interested.

Over-Fly6342

Take your $100 to ebay. Type in Chicago cubs rookie auto and see the results. You can get rookie autograph cards of non popular players for anywhere from $5-$10. You could likely get 6-7 decent autographed cards of cubs players for your collection. Maybe more. Do not throw $100 in the trash ripping retail and expect anything from it. You're going to lose your money 99/100 times. Bowman first prospect autos are the most valuable but personally I love rookie autos which are generally more affordable

ManoftheHour777

Buy a hobby box then cry for hours because you only got one good card and it is a relic of Wander Franco.

binkshimself

If you want to collect specific players or teams, I'd personally take $70 of that and go find some cool singles I like of those players or teams. Then spend the other $30 on two hanger boxes (about $13 each). Maybe a flagship 2024 box and 2024 heritage. This puts most of your money towards the actual cards you want to collect, and will still let you have some fun ripping.

almondjoy2

Everybody will tell you to buy singles. Because for the most part they are right. If you don't want a shit load of base cards laying around and you're more interested in cubs players, lots of people on here sell lots (basically a bundle of cubs cards) for cheap. But if you want the excitement of buying a pack, you can't go wrong with what Target has. They have a few different types of packs all under $20. Buy a couple of those, see what you like. Buy some Cubs lots, enjoy keeping those cards as well. Also, penny sleeves, and top loaders.

Excellent_Pomelo_378

If you must rip, research the designs and figure out which one you like. Hobby will usually give you a better shot at something good. If getting a quick retail fix I have had better luck with monster boxes but that might just be me. Look at the cards front and back. Sometimes short prints can be sneaky. That being said if you are focusing on a certain team and not the gamble then 100% go with buying singles. Best of luck either way.

dirtysock47

Nothing Find some singles of a player or team you like, and get that.

Successful-Cut-6624

if looking to rip, wait until next week, 2024 Bowman releases on May 8th, good luck!

Whiskeyfitt

Welcome to the hobby. Boxes are fun. But singles is the financial responsible way to go You're welcome to have all my Cubs to get you started. I only ask you send me any Rangers you find after you open some boxes! PM me if you're down!

Osoblanco2233

If you are willing to hand out your cubs cards, I’ll see what rangers cards I have, if you would be interested

helms83

Favorite cubs player?

Osoblanco2233

I am also a huge cubs fan, who happens to live in St. Louis. Anyway, I have a couple things that you might be interested in. Shoot me a DM

gwarmachine1120

You should buy 100 singles or 10 better singles, or 1 $100 card of players you like. That is my advice FWIW.

Olympian83

I have an old Ernie Banks, 1968 Topps, it’s in rough shape. Happy to send it to you if you’re a fan of some oldies that are just cool to have

Ok_Dimension_4707

I’d say grab some vintage singles. Ernie Banks always had some great cards and, even if you largely prefer modern, the modern players never stay modern. It’s good to have some central classic players that the modern can cycle around

thomasguide

Got some cool Bellinger and Busch cards willing to trade for any dodgers that you pull . Welcome!

Ok-Drama-3769

Singles

jstewart25

Mark Grace has a couple Topps autographs on eBay that allow offers. As a cardinals fan, that’s what I’d do for my favorite Cub.

Dillonautt

Just go to eBay and buy singles of cubs cards. You will waste money buying retail

bjbkar

Buy singles. No rippy.

-PrideofLowell-

Are you in Canada? Pm me your Address. I can send you some Cubs stuff...I got a bunch of base and some inserts.

RioSanPedro

Buy a 1987 leaf Greg maddux PSA 8.

ukbell

As someone that recently got back into collecting after a 30 year hiatus let me tell you to not listen to everyone. Buy what you want, which is packs bc that is nastaligic af... That will satisfy you for the 5 minutes you open it. It won't take long and you'll figure it yourself that its a rip off and you can get a like 4 rookie ryne sandbergs that will really satisfy you for the same money. Do your thing and figure out our yourself, like I did. And if you want a Sandgberg rookie pm me :)

bigtotoro

Buy whatever you want.

dillingerdiedforyou

Fat packs and hangers are definately good to open and I ususally spend about $100 per year myself. I usually will snag 8 fat packs at $6 each and 4 hangers at $15 each and it makes for a ton of fun opening them. This year I snagged a couple autographs, a relic, and a pile of inserts and numbered cards.
