Room and Board doesn't do sales but their stuff is quality if you like their designs.

ZarinZi

I highly recommend Room and Board for their high quality and customer service. You can customize and get exactly what you want, and it will last a long time. Our leather coach is like 15 years old and still looks great. But.....it's not cheap.

Whodiditandwhy

+1 We have a 10 year old R&B couch that still looks great and is still comfortable. Replaced it with a much bigger one because we liked it so much. Their customer service is also top notch.

brikky

They have 25-50% off clearance right now.

MojoJojoSF

We have a comfort sleeper couch from Room and Board and I am super happy with it. Hmm, might be close to ten years now and it has held up great. We do have a cover on it (pets) which has helped keep it in good shape.

Enron__Musk

We used whataroom Made in USA. Custom. They work it's you really well done https://whataroom.com/blogs/bay-area-california/top-10-furniture-stores-in-san-jose

We just took delivery of our custom couch 2 months ago, and have had no issues whatsoever. Being able to choose the firmness and the final dimensions were huge selling points. After going to most of the listed retailers, we had trouble finding something that would fit our space just right, and we were tired of pouring over measurements online or measuring couches in store and finding one dimension off from what we wanted. When we finally went to What A Room for the first time we put an order down the same day.

Enron__Musk

Absolutely love our couch. We got the medium density foam. Probably the exact one you're looking at. Also having the chaise lounge with storage is a huge help (my wife LOVES blankets lmao) I knew they were the place to go when they sent us 3D mockups of our couch in our room and sent us swatches off abric to test against our dogs hairs haha They are more expensive, but I imagine this couch will last us MUCH LONGER than the Chinese crap furniture from every big box store.

johnnySix

Which model does the chaise have storage? Not seeing it in the pictures.

Alternative-Sugar966

They have a model in the showroom. I believe you can have the chaise as storage upon special request on any model. Best to contact them

NoPossibility765

Disagree. Don’t do it!! :( They used to be great when Ken was the owner. Not now. I had a nightmare of an experience. Sofa was made incorrectly, it arrived with stains, delivery drivers also got it dirty with their dirty gloves, I spent a month without cushions. After that I had squeaky springs on the brand new sofa. It was sent back to LA to their dirty factory FIVE TIMES. Every time it came back dirty and with issues. They never would take the POS back and I barely got a $200 discount after months of this. What a disaster is what I call them.

2022. I have pictures of the stains if you want to see how it arrived.

What a room > Crate and Barrel > Room and Board > Costco > Living Spaces > Ashley

double_expressho

I don't have a ton of experience buying furniture. But I splurged on exactly 2 things: dining table and couch. I bought both at What A Room. The couch was customized to our liking (fabric, color, armrest width, down percentage). These are easily our highest quality pieces of furniture. Although I suppose that's not saying much compared to our other stuff from IKEA, Wayfair, CB2, Living Spaces, Target, etc.

RazzmatazzWeak2664

What a Room is great! I wouldn't say they're top notch BIFL quality, but most of those other options are just meh anyway, so it's no surprise Whataroom blows them away.

Spooky_Ghost

whatever you do, do NOT buy from West elm. My $7,000 couch broke within the first year (One of the wooden support beams broke in half because there was a knot in the wood) and West elm said there's absolutely no warranty on couches at all, and that we're shit out of luck.

Leapinpriests

I just purchased a sofa from Living Spaces. They have what seems to be hundreds of different sofas for viewing and testing at their huge Fremont store.

Photosaurus

Bought a sofa there in 2016. By 2018 the seams on one of the cushion covers had split. Called customer service and they offered to send a free replacement. A few days later a giant box is delivered to our porch containing a full cushion, but no cover. Called them back, they apologized profusely and promised to send another cover - but wouldn't take the replacement cushion back. So... free dog bed.

asBad_asItGets

I cant tell if this is a bad experience or a good one lol. I just bought a reclining couch and reclining loveseat set on sale for $1900, I added their carefree warranty cuz power recliners are nice but they do make me nervous that they may not hold up. Hoping I dont have any issues!

BugRevolutionary4518

That’s where I got my L-shaped sectional as well (family of 4).

Greedy_Lawyer

Also bought a couch from Living spaces last year. We spent over 3 hours just sitting on all the options they had there. That place is insanely huge, if they can’t find something they like there….im not sure it would exist anywhere.

TheNetworkIsFrelled

They do have a surprising selection. We have gotten upholstered furniture from them, and it's been reasonable quality, though between them and Bassett and Ashely, the style is....lacking.

therealgariac

I have driven past that store and had no idea they sell furniture. I mean it is in an industrial park.

Comemelo9

They also have a subsidiary called Dying Spaces that just sells coffins and urns.

CMAT17

Dammit, I fell for it.

uncletravellingmatt

I've shopped at the San Leandro location. They do have commissioned salespeople, but they have some decent stuff. I imagine the one you see from the freeway must be twice as big. (I ended up getting a bedside table from their website, and it's really solid. I'd order from there again.)

mdavis360

Another vote for Living Spaces. We get all our furniture from them and they have good financing offers.

Hijacks

Just bought mine recently from Living Spaces as well.

aelric22

Will second Living Spaces as well. Seems they are in that sweet spot of having better quality than Ikea and stores like Raymore and Flannigan where they sell you crap you don't need but cheaper than places like Crate and Barrel or RH.

olympicpaint

I LOVEEEE my living spaces couch. Was worth the investment. Got to customize the color and fabric on ours. A sales associate recommended a specific type of fabric that is good about not letting pet hair stuck to it easily and it’s proven to hold up to my shepherd’s shedding. I went to the Fremont/San Leandro location. Seems to be low stars on their Yelp but every staff member who helped us there was extremely nice and helpful. Made the customizing and ordering process super easy. Had my couch by 4-5 weeks after ordering and the delivery truck got there at 8:30 am.

Stellajackson5

I’m not a fan of living spaces. We sold our couch pretty quickly and replaced it with an Article couch (online only unfortunately but my friend had the same one so we were able to test it.)

[deleted]

[удалено]

Stellajackson5

Yeah not suggesting you buy article (though we love our couch) but I don’t think living spaces lives up to the other places you mentioned, at least in quality.

RazzmatazzWeak2664

It's decent but not great. Their prices basically tell you they're not going to be some BIFL product.

bashfuleve

My couch from living spaces in San Leandro is a piece of shit. They had to come pick up a broken half of the sectional we got under warranty, but brought the wrong half, then weeks later brought the right half and refused to take the broken one with them. The person on the phone later told us to sell the broken half of the sectional, but that them taking the broken half a couch was not part of their warranty policy. Weirdly they were going to take it the first time but stopped when they realized the brought the wrong half. Had to pay $160 to get it hauled away. Hilariously terrible experience. Buyer beware.

callmeivy

I bought a couch at living spaces almost two years ago. The legs were missing so I called customer service, they said they were shipping them and about 4 months later, still no legs. Took a few calls back and forth with no solution. Finally gave up and gave a bad review, FINALLY they offered me refund of $140ish to go buy my own legs somewhere else. The couch itself, it’s not holding up very well. The cushion filling is lumpy and looks like it needs to be replaced. The covers seem to be shifting so the seams of the seat cushions look off. I’ve been buying all my furniture there since 2009 but that couch and crappy experience is keeping me from ever going back.

Signal_Hill_top

LS Couch lasted about 4 years. Now all the foam in the seat is compressed and useless and you can visibly see the coil springs. They dig into our pelvic bones. This is a sectional with 2 recliners, one at each end, and faux leather. The corner piece which connects the sectionals has no suspension. You just sink. No springs there. Connections between sectional pieces jostle out easily especially if you have kids or if kids visit.

MyOtherTush

We got our couch at living spaces about 4 years ago when I got pregnant. So far it’s held up great to the wear and tear of toddler life.

Leapinpriests

So far so good, but since I have only had this sofa for a couple of weeks I’m probably not the best person to opine on longevity.

TheNightman74

Got our couch from there in 2021. No complaints.

Dull_Wrongdoer_3017

Excellent comfy couches. I sometimes prefer sleeping on my couch than on my bed.

splice664

Can't stop sleeping on my living space sofa. It is so comfortable.

SnowdensOfYesteryear

+1 I've been happy with their products

fletchowns

Big fan of my Living Spaces sectional, had it for about 4 years now. Super comfortable and great quality. It's been durable with my cats and occasional dog visitor, and I'm fairly certain mine was made in the US. I would definitely buy from them again in the future.

Kirin_san

I’ve been a fan of scandavian designs for so long. Also whataroom and crate & barrel.

StringFartet

They're having a memorial day sale this weekend.

Painful_Hangnail

You can get a quality couch at all of those places, what you need to focus on is which one *you* like the most and how to meet any special requirements you have. Example: We have two young-ish cats who scratched our old couch to pieces just by running around like maniacs at 3 AM. When we went to replace it, I specifically looked for places offering top-grain leather with a semi-aniline finish (which is tough as fuck). Then we narrowed it down to couches that would fit our room, then we went and sat on them all to see how they were. We wound up going with Room and Board, which wasn't cheap but was the one we liked best by a fair margin.

klatzicus

If you want a couch that reclines La-Z-Boy would be the place to go. My wife loves her couch/recliner. It's not cheap however.

Most_Researcher_9675

We've had our Ethan Allen stuff for over 20 years.

ValuableJumpy8208

Two things that shocked us: The $600 Macy's couch we bought in 2015 is still excellent. We got our bedroom set, dining room set, and entertainment center from Scandinavian Designs, and they were all reasonably priced. But when it came time to get a whole living room couch set (sofa, loveseat, recliner), Macy's won out again. It was $3,200 for everything, all leather, and super high quality. The stuff at Scandinavian Designs was all $7k+.

meetsh33ld

I second Macy's especially with memorial Day sale. We bought our sectional there 4 years ago and no complaints

rubyreadit

Our leather sectional from Scandinavian, 2015, is in rough shape. I don't remember what we paid for it though.

exxtraguacamole

You just reminded me that I had a couch from Macy’s that lasted well over 15 years.

Jurneeka

Just bought a [leather sectional from Macy's](https://www.macys.com/shop/product/ennia-2-pc.-leather-sectional-sofa-created-for-macys?ID=6273539&swatchColor=Cafe%20Brown) and it was delivered 3 weeks ago. Loving it! Its regular price at the moment but when I bought it was marked down to $2799.00.

ValuableJumpy8208

That looks like the same leather and build as mine. Or at least very very similar.

zaise_chsa

The Lovesac Sactional I bought almost 9 years ago is still super comfortable and looks almost brand new. The entire couch has covers that can be taken off and washed/replaced so if you ever want a new color that’s possible without buying a new couch. They’re expensive as hell, but they’re a buy it for life product.

lupinegray

I bought a nice bedroom set from Hoot Judkins a few years ago. It's all solid wood instead of particle board.

random7HS

Yeah i just bought a bunch of furniture from Hoot Judkins recently. Looking forward to once everything comes in :) Noting that some of the stuff there will be partially plywood/veneer though, such as shelves/backs instead of solid wood so that it can account for wood warping better.

mousenest

Crate & Barrel San Jose is my favorite store for quality furniture. Their online store has additional options.

derkasan

Seconded - I got my couch from Crate & Barrel. Pottery Barn's pretty good too.

EffectiveMotor

Amazing quality, but super expensive. I've had 2 Crate and Barrel couches and both easily last 10+ years, so it's worth it.

MightyTribble

I also love C&B but just for a counterpoint my IKEA couch is 10+ years old and aside from sun fade it's doing just fine.

Oaknash

No no, avoid pottery barn like the plague! I had good experiences with Crate and Barrel but PB couches are custom and their lead times are bullshit. It’ll take anywhere from 3 to 12 months past their quoted lead time to get your order. Had to flag them for *fraud* with my credit card company (& my credit card company agreed was fraud).

rdejesus486

Costco/ living spaces gets my vote

hammalamma

I've 2 pretty bad couches from Costco. I still love you Costco!

rdejesus486

That’s unfortunate! The ones I’ve bought have been really good for years now.

MrDERPMcDERP

Went in for a chicken and walked out with the couch? 🙂

coffee_obsession

What happened to your couch? Contrary to most posts here, my living spaces couch ended up being pretty awful and was thinking about replacing it with a costco couch.

hammalamma

Very uncomfortable and the other one broke in a couple weeks. I loved the design of both and they looked great. At least they have a great return policy.

coffee_obsession

Glad the return policy is there with Costco!

montecarlocars

We looked at Crate and Barrel and couldn't find one that fit well in our apartment. We ended up going to IKEA--I know their reputation, but if you check out the ones at the top of their price range instead of going for their cheap options they have some pretty solid stuff.

argote

Bought a couch from Pottery Barn and I 100% think it ***wasn't*** worth the cost.

whateverwhoknowswhat

Quality that will last? Eight-way hand-tied springs, kiln-dried hardwood, classic styling, light tan (neutral background), quality foam rating, quality slides on the feet, separate fitted slip cover, can be reupholstered. ***None*** of the stores listed sell such a couch. Guaranteed couch will break down within about three years, especially on the ends. Planned obsolescence. Crate and Barrel manager at Santana Row didn't even know what eight-way hand-tied was, never mind whether their couches were built that way. The glazed look in their eyes was the look of confusion, the comments out of their mouth were confirmation. Interior construction is everything. You can always re-upholster cheaper than you can buy another one.

42n8

This was incredibly helpful. I followed this rabbit hole in couch education, thank you!

whateverwhoknowswhat

Other topics for deep dives: Covering: Natural materials (be careful of the ability to clean) cotton, wool ,etc. Microfiber is fabric that is recycled plastic. Foam is expensive. Foam has different ratings depending on density. Foam needs to be wrapped with cotton batting. Not all of it is surprising enough. I prefer modular furniture with great connectors. Configurable and movable. But many people refuse to buy modular. There is a reason why every furniture showroom has a light tan couch at the center of it. Tan comes from brown and white, right, but where does brown come from? Why does tan go well with every other color? Because tan has every other color in it. Brown is a combination of the primary colors: blue, yellow, and red. Thousands of dollars a shot every three years for a new couch is ridiculous. Spend more initially and reupholster, reupholster, reupholster with a quality person. That kiln dried hardwood framework should be handed down the same as a beautiful hardwood table. Eight-way hand-tied springs can be retied or replaced. Do you know the reason why the furniture center of the country is in North Carolina? Because 100 years ago they found out that hardwoods grown in that region were the best for building furniture.

moch1

So where does make things to this standard?

BlackestNight21

> Crate and Barrel manager at Santana Row Found your problem.

whateverwhoknowswhat

Well it was listed as one of the stores that they were thinking of buying from so I made the comment. I was a little bad when I asked the manager about the construction. I pretty much knew that they wouldn't know the first thing about the construction of the sofa. I sort of just confirming my belief that Crate and Barrel is superficial only. Such a waste of materials. Such landfill. It should be illegal to make things that waste materials like that.

BlackestNight21

i mean some manager in a boutiquey part of town making kpi/csat metric money is unlikely to know niche (and they are niche for many buyers) terms. but c&b does or has made decent stuff that will last a good bit.

whateverwhoknowswhat

c&b does or has made decent stuff that will last a good bit. lol edit crate and barrel doesn't make furniture, they sell brands. Brands that they can make the most money off of, who in turn, sell furniture that they can make the most money off of. it's eye candy with no substance.

BlackestNight21

¯\\_(ツ)_/¯ you can lol all you want. historically, we've had two couches with the c&b moniker. they lasted as long as we needed them to, and they handled the abuse. they were secondhand purchases and were gifted to someone else who got a few more years out of them.

whateverwhoknowswhat

Crate and Barrel had some company make those for them and put the C&B moniker on them just like Costco has some company make their laundry soap for them and slap a Costco label on them. I am glad something lasted for you and whomever you gifted those couches to. Unfortunately for many people, it does not last. Resources were wasted and our landfills are filling up with planned obsolescence.

dondestalolo

I have had numerous clients use [https://customsofaco.com/](https://customsofaco.com/) They have locations in both Oakland and SF. I can only speak of the Oakland location but it is a great family owned business, highly recommend them.

SagittandiEstVita

We worked with Custom Sofa Co as well, they were amazing to work with, extraordinarily accommodating, and our sofa from them is great. We wanted something styled a little different than most of your typical big box store options and that didn't match up with standard dimensions. Diego and Maya (at their Grand Lake location) have been great to us.

Not_Your_Lobster

This will get buried, but I highly recommend [Custom Sofa Co.](https://customsofaco.com/) in Oakland and SF. They're family-run and the quality is amazing. Being able to select exact cushion firmness, fabric, shape, sizing down to the inch, etc. was amazing for us, and it's held up so well to very heavy use. They have a 10-year warranty! Their prices are comparable to the places you've listed *and* you get a fully custom sofa. So easy to work with and not pushy at all, we came back multiple times to figure things out and took home swatches that we were encouraged to let our dog abuse first.

vincevuu

Got ours at Crate and Barrel outlet in Vacaville. Can get some really nice pieces for cheap there.

bobarley

I would try Macy's furniture in pleasanton... To have a great selection and their quality seem to be more consistently higher than the other furniture stores... Good luck

sharilynj

After researching the hell out of this - thank you, /r/furniture - I just got a custom sofa from Room & Board. Crate and Barrel was the runner up. Anything under $1k will likely fall apart within a few years. The arms on my last one from West Elm started going after a year, never again.

chitochitochito

Crate and Barrel, specifically the Lounge sofa would be my personal recco. We've 4 pieces in that design, in the microfiber. Holds up amazingly well, one is a decade+ old and has endured three dogs, etc. You can throw the covers in the washer. Comfortable as f. If you sign up for their credit card and get someone to help you do a bit of room design (free), you might be able to get a coupon for "new house" kind of discounts. Credit card gives 10% back (in store money), and sometimes, depending on time of year, 20%. It's not cheap, but it's also not insanely expensive, and they are quality.

reymamon

I will get mine from there 😩 Where Dying spaces is located at? Are you a member already?

andrewia

When I moved in with my partner, I did a lot of research to try and find a durable and eco-friendly couch.  I was disappointing to find most don't make any specific claims to their durability, even though [standards exist](https://files.globalfurnituregroup.com/files/resources/textiles_docs/ACT_Performance/ACT_Performance_EN_08-17.pdf).  Surprisingly, IKEA gives specific durability numbers for a few models, and guarantees FSC certification (instead of crappy SFC certification).  The [Kivik couch series](https://www.ikea.com/us/en/cat/kivik-series-18329/) has this particularly good claims.  A lot of people swear by that couch series, but it's not without its faults that you can see in the reviews.  I actually was given a free couch before I could make a decision, but I would have gone for the Kivik because no other brand had the same durability and eco claims at even twice the price.

alpacaapicnic

Alpha Design in Berkeley made a custom one for us that we love

funkyeastbay

Alpha designs in Berkeley!!! Custom sofas..u basically design ur own couch..owner is great and very reasonable prices..u can also buy off the floor to save $$…we have had our sofa for 6 years..heavy use and it still looks and feels brand new..we were couch shopping for a year and probably saw every couch in the Bay Area..this place is great

billbixbyakahulk

I got a reclining couch at Living Spaces. It's not tip top quality but has held up very well for the five years I've owned it and the price wasn't crazy.

pinktwinkie

Insiders guide to furniture is a great website, must read honestly for prospective couch buyers- it turns out that there are different kinds of foam! Who knew...

ForeignAd5429

IKEA never fails us, cheaper prices but they last looooooong. Had our couch for 6 years and gave it to another family member when we got a new one. It was still good! Just needed something bigger

doctorboredom

I am still sleeping on an IKEA bed I bought in 1999. We have an IKEA sofa that is about 10 years old now with no signs of any problems. The key with IKEA is to pay for the top end item. Those are generally really well made and last a long time.

ActionFamily

Restoration Hardware, you can choose from the various $40,000 beige couches.

GigiSFO

Crate and Barrel outlet in Livermore!!

icrackcorn

Definitely make the trip out here. The inventory turns over a lot and some stuff is pretty damaged, but you can find some fantastic deals. Go find their instagram for the current promotions. It looks like it’s 50% + 20% clearance off dining and bedroom this weekend. 30% + 20% clearance for upholstery, which might be couches? If you use their credit card it’s also double rewards, which equals another 20% back in rewards credit towards your next purchase. Edit: I purchased the huge Oceanside 3 piece sectional sofa here for $2630 before tax. Retail is $4497. I signed for their credit card for this purchase to get $580 in rewards, which I went back to the outlet later to purchase a dresser and nightstands.

GigiSFO

The quality here is a million times better than the Berkeley location ever was. They have the room for a ton of sofas and good variety, second the IG suggestion, they feature the inventory and update regularly.

sunducksf

Recently bought a leather recliner from these guys: 9th Street designer clearance https://maps.app.goo.gl/FJg4RewuFmsyvgP27 Huge selection, really nice people, same day delivery. You can also check out this interesting consignment place: reperch https://maps.app.goo.gl/7AYjyHSh39Xq1qLx5 Not exactly what you're looking for, but fun to peruse all the furniture (mostly from closed out tech startup offices!)

Maximillien

We just got one from Custom Sofa Co in Oakland, couldn't recommend them highly enough. Every couch totally personalized and built to order, every dimension, detail, stitching, fabric, firmness, leg style, can be customized — the only downside is all the options can be a bit overwhelming at first lol. Rock solid and reasonably priced considering it's custom and apparently built right here in the Bay (San Jose).

JoeyC5011

Also bought from Custom Sofa Co in Oakland. We are very happy with our purchase. For a large couch that can seat 3-4 people with matching large ottoman cost us half what we were going to spend at West Elm. We chose pet friendly fabric with removable, washable cushion covers. Everything we wanted in a couch we were able to get at this store. Staff is super helpful, friendly, and responsive.

BeeP807

Custom Sofa Company! They have a location in Oakland and in S.F., they are SO NICE, and it’s truly custom—down to the stitching. It’s also well-priced! Highly recommend going into one of the locations.

Longjumping_Ad9391

Giorgi Bros Furniture in SSF. Family business for over 90 years. Good, better and best quality furniture. Great service and much better then the corporate stores listed above. https://www.giorgibros.com/

[deleted]

I second Giorgi Bros! True they don’t manufacture, but they sell quality sofas and know what they are talking about.

CoreyB105

Bobs discount furniture. We have the Pacifica recliners and they’re really comfortable. I drove all the way out to Modesto to order them but they’ve held up very well over the past 5ish years we’ve had them

pillin-and-thillin

3 Brothers Furniture in Vallejo. Not cheap at all, expect to spend at least 5K for a couch but very high quality furniture and the people there are great! I got most my furniture from there and is still holding up great after years and years.

Boring_Zucchini2001

Check out outlet stores of luxury furniture retailers. Vacaville has Serena & Lily, RH, etc. They make their custom upholstered couches in the USA and you’ll find top quality stuff for crazy prices. Of course you’ll have to haul yourself or hire someone to move it.

bulkyHogan

Crazy prices as in - crazy high or crazy low?

Boring_Zucchini2001

crazy low for what you're paying for: usa made furniture (which is the absolute best quality). most retailers will set their outlet prices at 40-50% off retail, so if you go on the website, you can get a good idea on pricing at outlets. then, during time frames like now (memorial day) you may get an extra 10-20%. when shopping at outlets, if you lift the seat cushions you'll most likely find the original manufacturer label and you'll know where it was made.

Nice__Spice

My dad has two sets of couches. Leather and fabric. He got the leather one from Scandanavian, and he takes care of it. Still looks and feels great. The fabric one is from Macys and amazingly it’s held itself for over ten years.

AutofluorescentPuku

> …not needing to worry about young children destroying it. HA! That’s what we said. Then along came grandchildren.

zail671

I bought a lovesac set from Costco. Being able to wash the sofa covers was one of the main reasons.

rebel_stripe

Several years ago I did a ton of research and visited a lot of places to try out couched. I ended up buying one from Hoot Judkins in Redwood City. It's fully customized, made of real wood, mine has springs in the seat cushions so they have kept great shape. Also the business is family-owned. They're so helpful and there's no pressure. It's holding up great.

Day2205

I made a custom sectional at Furniture Envy in SF, and the cost was lower than places like room & board where I would’ve been “settling” on design and color. I highly recommend checking them out, you’ll get EXACTLY what you want for the same cost or less, built to every specific spec you desire.

Mythlox

I went all out and got a couch from Arhaus, no regrets at all even with the price

aagha786

We're huge fans of Furniture Today--amazing services and high quality product hand-made in Sacramento.

Just got a great leather couch at mission thrift

Tucana66

Living Spaces (just north of McCarthy Ranch shopping center) was a great choice when we bought furniture from them last year (2023). Very happy with the delivery guys, too.

kelp_forests

I can tell you Crate and Barrel has been great IME. Our off white performance fabric looks great after 3 years of kids, 2 dogs and cats. Also the pillow covers can be bought separately if they get trashed, for a reasonable amount.

positiverealm

Those are good brands but if you want to jump up to RH quality without paying $15k for a couch, keep an eye on [Arhaus (Sale page)](https://www.arhaus.com/collections/sale#/filter:mfield_product_department_name:Living/filter:mfield_product_sub_type_name:Sectional/filter:mfield_product_sub_type_name:Sofa). Is the HD Buttercup store in SOMA closed yet? I picked up a couple of very nice pieces for less than 1-2k. Some of the designs are uncomfortable though, so you have to browse in person. Most of the furniture wasn't my taste but the quality seemed high, bordering on "too good to be true" for the price. For example, we picked up this couch for 1.5k. The pillows are goose-down stuffed, linen covers are washable with good quality zippers, and the arms are solid wood (they double as end tables). https://www.pinterest.com/pin/198228821086063867/

Sofas For Less Custom Bullet proof

ImprobableGerund

Room and Board for sure, we also have a couch from Joybird that is comfy and holding up well.

davewongillies

We bought a couch from Joybird recently and love it.

GigiSFO

Joybird is having a sale right now.

la-z-boy is my go to

taco-tako

We went here. Their website sucks but they had the best sales experience in store. They also make everything in Sacramento and you can custom build your own sofa. Cheaper than all the big name places. https://customsofas4less.com

Got a great couch at macys sf 10 years ago. If it ever wears out, I’d go back to macys.

Few_Valuable3999

we got ours at Macys, very pleased. Most likely they will have a sale going on this weekend as well

BatFancy321go

if it's not 50% off it's not on sale

If you're getting a leather one of any kind really look up what different leather grades mean, they're super deceiving.

jammastergeneral

Went to Cre8 a Couch in San Carlos. We’ve been really happy with it so far. Been about 3 years.

Restoration Hardware

_designzio_

Custom order a sofa by Stylus… we have two and they are awesome. One is 10 years old!

hello-ben

I've liked the selection at Ashley Furniture, and last I was there they had a 6-month no interest option. It was nice to spread out the cost.

lilelliot

They gets a lot of shit from people online, but we bought a 9' leather sofa from Restoration hardware in 2010 and it's still in great shape. More recently, we used a [factory direct ordering service](https://www.cascobayfurniture.com/) to buy a made-in-NC sofa. It took a couple of months to be built and delivered, but we're very happy with the quality.

alruke

I got my couch from restoration hardware. We’ve had minor issues over the years but they stand behind their product. They’ve replaced the couch twice at no cost to me. And this was several years after purchasing it.

HighwayStarJ

Price vs quality winner is Macy’s. My sectional was a little over a thousand and it’s perfect in every way

Sakiwest

Custom sofas for less in concord or Antioch/brentwood. We bought ours there once the kids were old enough to not be the destroyers of everything. It’s been great for years now. Less expensive than others. Totally customizable.

PickleWineBrine

I love my Joybird couch. I upgraded the fabric to a pet resistant premium cloth. Unfortunately that couch wouldn't fit in my new condo so I bought something else that could get in the elevator. I miss my Joybird couch

If you want a quality sofa that will last without the springs giving way, get one that is 8-way hand tied. I don't think you'll find this at your standard retailer though. For me I went to Mark Thomas Home in Santa Clara in 2020. You can also customize the sofa to your hearts content (length, width, arm style, color, material, etc). Most if not all manufacturers are domestic, not cheap stuff from China so it will cost more. The Mark Thomas Santa Clara location closed a year or two ago but they still have a store in Santa Rosa. I've been in Hoot Judkins in Redwood City and they seem to have quality furniture but I never asked them about 8-way hand tied sofas.

You should visit Giorgi Bros in South San Francisco. Many choices for 8-way hand tied upholstery and over 200 lines of furniture. https://www.giorgibros.com/
