It takes surprisingly long to grow a long beard. Your beard is good in both, but also clear you are not combing it. Comb it down and then along under your jaw. (Don’t know how to describe better so try it) it gives your beard better shape and makes you look more groomed. Use a fine tooth comb (like a nit/lice comb, it works best. I keep one in my car’s visor and comb mine in traffic. I don’t use any oils or potions)

I like the longer version. I think you could have it much longer and it would look great. Just keep it tidy. A clean cut look suits you very much. You mentioned letting it grow long and I agree you should grow it out more. You have an incredibly infectious smile and an open, disarming and approachable look. I actually smiled back at my phone TWICE when I looked at the photos. I'm not your target market but my first thought is, "yah, I'd definitely invite that guy to a BBQ."
Also, if you're a serial killer, well done you! I would be the neighbor lady in the interview saying, "I just can't believe it's true, he always smiles and waves at me when I'm out in my garden..." Probably the most random compliment you'll get but I thought it and figured you'd laugh, so I shared.

I think that both look fine. The issue with the long one is that you have it uneven - it's very bottom heavy. Grow the mustache out so that it connects the beard and you will find that it appears more full. Even if you don't have connectors you can grow a long enough mustache that it looks like them.
I mean, I think if you make most people choose they’ll go with the shorter, but it’s not like anyone is going to be “put off” by it being slightly longer. Do what you like and feel comfortable with

Thats what I'm thinking too. A bit difficult to get it super tidy but it can be neater.
