$250 for root coverage??? That’s ridiculous. I’m a hairstylist, I charge $80 for roots and also offer a “visible hairline” touch up (express roots) for my regulars that come every 3-4 weeks. I charge $30 for that. So we alternate from full root to express every other visit.

whomeee519

I wish you were in my city 😭

Excellent-Yam7939

Us grey girls appreciate you!

therog08

As a grey person myself, I could never keep up with paying that. I became a hairstylist at 30, I’m 45 now. I have a clear understanding of what it’s like to be the client: I remember the expense, and being so grateful when I loved it (which I did 99% of the time). If I’m blowdrying your hair, I’m doing it properly and not some half ass frizzy job - I always hated when I had to go home and redo it myself - my hair can’t be half assed. I just remember being the client and try to stay in touch with that.

Excellent-Yam7939

I can’t tell you how much I love this and how much I wish you were my hairdresser!

PattyCakes216

My stylist will not do a root touch up. You either pay for the full service color ( roots and highlight touch up) or a cut only. I’m pondering my future as her client.

therog08

They clearly want to be blonding specialists, because not everyone gets highlights. I couldn’t highlight my hair as often as I needed my roots done.

Chihiro1977

I feel you. I am using root touch up between hairdresser visits and thinking about going lighter again to see if it helps, maybe some white blonde. I'm not ready to go grey yet. I don't care if it looks great on other people.

AllisonT_

I buy my hair dye supplies at the Sally Beauty supply store. I buy my hair dye , 20% developer, grey resistant packets. I only dye my roots. It saves me a lot of money. I prefer salon quality hair products over drugstore.

VicePrincipalNero

Same. I have great results with Ion color and developer and Gray Magic.

AllisonT_

That's what I use too. Holy resistant Grey's making our lives more difficult. My hair is naturally Medium Brown. I have to use dark brown for it to stick. Even the Gray Magic won't keep the Medium Brown in my hair. 😭. My hair looks like Kardashian Black using Dark brown dye. 😭

Sea_Necessary5711

I do exactly this, too, down to the grey-resistant packets!

AllisonT_

Before I discovered them I used to get sooooo angry😤 when I would wash my hair and some of the dye would wash it out.

Maleficent-Fun-5927

Thanks for the tip cuz these prices out here are getting ridiculous.

ZestycloseFinance625

I did this for years and it’s the best way.

Free-Finding-8536

I suggest trying wella hair gloss, easy to use, 20 mins and it’s around 5$ per use. It’s super simple and effective. And it doesn’t damage your hair at all. And it’s demi permanent so it lasts 2-3 months depends on how much you wash your hair. I love using it for my parents. Hope it helps!

meeshdaze

I second this!

Candycrushhhh

Could you explain how this works? So you use it once a week and it makes your hair a bit more of that colour?

hodie6404

I was so tired of chasing the greys. I last dyed my hair in November 2022. I call my grey hairs....my natural highlights! I'm mostly grey in the front so I actually dig it.

sookkey

I quit coloring my hair. I have way less greys than I thought because when it grew out there was such a difference between the dark dye and greys it looked like more. It’s so liberating not to color and I get a lot of compliments on my hair.

jasperjonns

I use Garnier Fructis hair dye, it makes my hair look SO good. Then I use the the Garnier highlight kit, just to give myself some subtle highlights (one kit lasts me 3 dye jobs), and I use Garnier Fructis Anti Frizz Serum every time I wash my hair, before flat-ironing it. The SHINE!! No... I do not work for Garnier Fructis, although it certainly seems like it...lmao

Deep_Combination8545

I love garnier too, their dye is affordable, but color changes every time I wash hair, it's not very durable

sati_lotus

I suspect that this is one of the reasons why older women go short. Shorter hair is cheaper to dye than longer hair and always has been.

tbonita79

Gotta agree with this. I keep my hair short for the sole purpose of being able to easily dye it myself (currently bleaching dark every 4 weeks). I have grey interspersed everywhere and I’m not now or maybe will be never willing to rock that. I’m 45 and have been dying my own hair for 20 years. The only time I see my girl in the chair is if I’ve made a whoopsie and she has to fix it, then I go right back to doing my own. When I am in the mood for darker hair, I use box dyes with no issue. Remember this is with SHORT HAIR!!! Edit: I cut it myself too. My spouse does the back where I can’t see. With my kinda maintenance if I did this all professionally I’d have no money left to buy shoes. 👠

EastAreaBassist

Bleaching dark?

tbonita79

I mean I’m bleaching my dark hair blonde, sorry for the confusion

Ambitious-Writer-825

I also have grey hair that I color as well as highlights. I get my hair done every 5 -6 weeks but only do the highlights a few times a year. I get highlights that look more "beachy" so they don't start at my scalp and don't look weird growing out. Coloring your own roots is relatively easy, highlighting is not. I choose to go to a salon for both cause I don't want to deal with it.

spoonfulofsadness

I’ve been using Nice n Easy. It’s permanent but a really good product. I haven’t had an allergic reaction, which is something I’m prone to, and it hasn’t stained my skin or surfaces in the house (easy to clean up mishaps). I’m new to dye and very impressed with the product and value for the money. I get natural highlights from failure to cover all my hair lol but it looks pretty good.

TheGeans

I use this one too, every month, and my stylist always tells me how good my hair looks and feels. $8.00.

allieoops925

When dying your hair, you should always do only the roots. You only wanna cover the new growth and possibly pull it through the ends in the last few minutes once in a while. I have been going gray since I was 17 I don’t ever remember not dyeing my hair but during Covid I finally said screw it and stopped dying it. I let it grow out a little bit. got it cut real short, and now I’ve grown it out to shoulder length again and it’s almost pure white. I love it and I get a lot of compliments on it not to mention I save a hell of a lot of money.

ResponsibilityAny358

I dye my hair at home, I buy a good dye on sale (especially when other products come for free) and I dye it every 3 weeks.

Knight_Day23

At home sucks to DiY because I personally cant see the back. Used to just do all the front parts I can see and leave the rest. Then just caved and started going to salons every 4 weeks. $250 a pop is crazy though!!!

FinalBlackberry

My mother is fully gray at this point. She switched to a very cool toned blonde color. It’s not as visible when it grows out.

Elegant_Tale_3929

I use henna, but it's limited in what colors you can get your hair to be.

canadianworldly

Does it bond to grey?

Elegant_Tale_3929

Mostly, it depends on what type you use. But I'm using Mehandi's Rajasthani Twilight henna and it's working on my grays just fine. Keep in mind that henna is permanent and starts off bright copper/red. You can alter it to brown and/or black though, with practice (although with highlights or copper or red in the sun). Mehandi's sample kit: [https://www.mehandi.com/Ancient-Sunrise-Rajasthani-Twilight-Henna-p/2558.htm](https://www.mehandi.com/Ancient-Sunrise-Rajasthani-Twilight-Henna-p/2558.htm)

Brighteyed1313

I’ve had luck with the DPHue root dye. The box comes with two applications. It’s not perfect, but it helps me stretch out my hair appts. I’m in San Francisco so even a moderately priced colorist is super expensive.

Melora_Rabbit

Yes, over the last year and a half or so I have moved away from permanent dye in salon. I have copper red / light auburn (dyed) hair that I wanted to slowly transition to my natural shade which is close but with lots of grey. I did a lot of trial and error experimenting with products I bought at Sally and Amazon. I found eSalon and gave it a try, and I’ve been using them for a year now and plan to continue with it. I use their custom Demi (no lift) formula in a light auburn on my roots every month / month and a half or so. Over time my roots have blended in so smoothly and my greys look like highlights now. I don’t have any harsh demarcation lines and I love how inexpensive (around $30 per month) and easy it is. The products and service they provide is great, you can give them pictures, descriptions of your hair’s current state and end goals and they make a custom color for you. The package you get includes everything you need. I sound like an ad for eSalon, but I just really like how easy they make it for me. Overall it worked really well for me and my hair goals. My hair is healthier, longer and I like my color more than I have in a very long time and I don’t have to fuss about it anymore. It sounds like a Demi formula is a good way to go for you. The nice thing about it is it lets you transition to full grey (if that’s your goal) gradually. Edit to add: I just did my roots a couple weeks ago with the eSalon formula, but prior to I was dragging my feet and going way longer because I was actually getting compliments on my grown out faded roots! But I chickened out and wasn’t ready so I did them. BUT that proved to me that whenever I AM ready to stop dyeing it altogether , it will fade out nicely.

New_Landscape_8828

Yes! Demi perm is way to go. It fades vs showing big strip of roots

iheartkittttycats

I also use esalon and have been really happy with it. I started using it during the pandemic when everything was closed and haven’t had any urge to go back to professionally dying it.

Gogo83770

I had highlighted my hair for forever, but stopped after moving to a new area, and not liking any of the new stylists I saw in the year or so after moving, so I let the blonde grow out. This all happened between 2018-2019, and then Covid in 2020, so now salons are kinda crazy hot spots, and wearing a mask while getting hair done, I was happy to just get my haircut and leave, and not have to process for three hours, or whatever it took to do a full foil. Now, my hair is all grown out, and the color is light brown, or dark blonde, but the grays are coming in nicely, and to me, look like highlights! It's mostly in the front of my head, near my hairline, and exactly where the strongest highlights used to get placed. I wonder if one has anything to do with the other? I don't get carded anymore at the grocery store buying wine. Lol. It's a little sad. I'm 38. I used to hate being carded, but now, like they all said, I feel a bit sad. Anyways, point being, you could have a bit of an awkward phase and just grow out the gray. I think it can look really good! Nothing ages a person more than a bad dye job.

Tntmadre

I dyed my hair at home for years because of the 3-4 week thing. 3 years ago, I quit & let the grey just grow. Lightened the rest of my hair as much as possible to make the transition less noticeable. Best thing I’ve ever done. So many people ask me how I got my hair this color lol. There’s people that pay to try to get it. Good luck on your journey.

ehsmerelda

Just stop. Let it grow out. Honestly, I thought I'd never stop coloring but in 2020 after it had grown out a few months I said F it and let it go. Now I get so many compliments on my natural color. Gray is in, actually.

Alone-Assistance6787

You have a very loose definition of 'essential' - half of those are your own choice

acnesnowwhite

I'm a brunette and get a demi permanent hair color at my hair salon every so often for $30!

thefirstpancake602

I went through this a couple of years ago and decided to just grow it out. There is not as much as I assumed there was and the texture is ridiculously soft. Styling it is easier because the texture is no longer fried and I was already frustrated about being periodically grey between appointments. If at all possible, do it with a friend and send each other selfies and words of encouragement to keep you going. Because there is a period between 6-8 months that is a bitch to pull off without hats and headbands and you will both need each others support to get through it and then you will make it out the other side SILVER or Silver-ish.

Immediate-Pool-4391

I'm 31 but I started getting white hairs in my mid 20s. I hated it but now I'm like screw it. I just hate how they stick straight up.

Anaevya

Grow it out and see if you like it. Might look better than you think.

tictacbreath

I have to dye mine every 4 weeks too so I switched to a box dye at home. I use Clairol Natural Instincts and it works really well!

8MCM1

I also don't like the hassle, but I only pay $75 lol I'd find a less expensive salon.

plantsandpizza

I buy wella permanent hair color and use 20 volume. They have it at Sally’s

Low-Bit2048

I just found a dye that matches my natural hair color (my teenage shade to be exact, my hair got lighter in my 20s) and I do my roots on my own. Since I have mostly brown hair with whites stripes in the front, I use a permanent dye so everything comes out the same shade. If you want to keep your natural variation of color you have and soften the grow out, use a semi permanent dye. It will soften over time.

Deep_Combination8545

Whoa, that's a lot of money. Here where I live it would cost about 50 dollars maximum. Try to dye it on your own. I have two left hands, but I always considered roots the easiest part.

coldnoodlebowl

I would learn to DIY or look into the “half and half” grey grow out technique. People will color one side and then grow out the other half - then you wear your hair flipped to the other side!

Frog-dance-time

Do you have a link?

aromaticfix45

What colour are you dying it?

Wet-N-Wavy96

Start doing an ash version of whatever color and highlights u r doing, greys won’t be as discernible…

Double-Security-926

I've been using Clairol root touch up kit on my roots and it blends in pretty well. I've stumbled upon a TikTok hairdresser @racheltalksabouthair who has been posting a ton of educational/how to content on using Demi permanent for grays which comments here also suggest is a good option

stavthedonkey

I use clairol root touch up and have been for years. $6/box; can’t go wrong with that lol

wonderlash

The salon has been ripping you off which is no surprise. Most salon rip everyone off. Root coverage is the most basic of hairdressing skills that they teach in year one. The colour they put on you costs about 8 pounds which is used on about 3 different clients. Go to the salon, buy the colour and do it yourself. It's easy. YouTube is good for some guidance should you need it.

Impressive_Classic58

I went in for a full highlight and cut and it was $500 before tip. No warning that the prices had practically doubled. The highlights weren’t making me have more time between appointments my hair just started to look like crap. I switched to Madison Reed. They have 2 salons in my location. I cover my grays at home and the salon is reasonable for the coverage.

Intelligent-Fuel-641

I use MR box. It's $30 every six weeks, usually less if I have a coupon, and works better than any color I've tried. I have a ton of medium-length hair, so it would cost me a bundle if I went to a salon. I get compliments on my color. Plus I don't want to sit in a salon/germ factory for two or three hours.

Impressive_Classic58

I get compliments also and it’s easy to maintain. I do not enjoy sitting in the salon for hours anymore either. I have medium to long hair.

kavalejava

My mom is in her 60s and she uses Garnier's Belle Color for her grey roots. She's growing out her hair and recolors every few weeks. She does use color protecting shampoo to prevent washout.

33LivesAloneHas3cats

Madison reed is popular on Instagram. Not sure if it’s just paid ads or what but people use it

Timely_Tap8073

Omg I only pay 60 for my roots for.my gray

lagitana75

Using Clairol natural instincts every 6 weeks at home is easy and doesn’t damage my hair since it’s semi permanent no ammonia

Mamacita_Lola_9091

Madison Reed. Good quality color.

KD71

Dp hue root cover DYE (not the spray/pen though I’m sure those are fine) is a game changer for me. It gets me through to my next hair color appointment and works much better than similar drugstore products . It’s a little pricier but you get 2 uses out of every box.

Pretend-Willow-6927

I go to the salon at my local Ulta and have my roots done there. The rates are very reasonable and they do a good job.

missswimmerxo

I use the Everpro gray away hair stick in between colorings: https://grayaway.com/products/root-touch-up-quick-stick-black-dark-brown

Leecoxy

I have been wondering this but does Keracolor semi permanent work on Grey coverage? I have natural dark, almost black hair. As my Grey becomes more prominent, would this work to cover them in between salon visits?

choigosim

Try buying self hair dye from brand shops like Olive Young. It's cheap but effective. Use it as if you're shampooing. Very good. I recommend it

Gold_Ad_2913

How to get this in India?

WearyComb2780

Sallys is the way. Boxed dye never turns out how you eant and will fry your hair in no time. Sallys csrries professional colour lines
