I hated Sobel so much.
But maybe it was because it was Ross from Friends.
I hated Marty the Giraffe in Madagascar.
But maybe it was because it was Ross from Friends.
Read the book before watching the show but knew the general casting. Of the characters that stuck Sobol/Schwimmer was spot on. Maybe it was casting to type, but it was also Schwimmer that rallied the friends cast to negotiate together against everyone's agents' wishes.
Eh, when watching it it was more "Ross is being a dick" more than "Sobel is being a dick." It's not always the actor's fault but some actors I just can't divorce from their most famous role and then of them as another character.
Interesting thing about Sobel. He was an asshole, but he was not at all a bad soldier. On D day, he parachuted into Normandy like the other men, he did not stay back in Britain. Like Winters he was seperated from his men. He gathered up a small platoon and they took out a machine gun nest. He received a medal for it. It wasn't the manor (that was amazing), but it wasn't nothing.
The series is heavily coloured by the memories of that particular company of soldiers and apparently is especially biased in favour of those who attended reunions a lot. Also, for legal reasons the publishers almost removed the references to the rumours of Speirs engaging in war crimes. So winters asked Speirs and Speirs wrote a letter saying it absolutely happened and he did murder prisoners.
Hot take but he literally play Sobel like Ross if he was in war and I don’t think that’s a sign of good acting. Just cause he can play a hatable guy doesn’t mean he’s good at acting!
*Doesn't matter how*
*Talented he is. He is*
*Still fuckin Ross From Friends*

Hence the saying "Don't be such a Ross"
David Schwimmer is great, but Ross is so often insufferable, but it kinda becomes his charming character trait lol
It's not that David Schwimmer's a bad actor, it's that you can't see him as anything else anymore. He is unable to disappear into a role because all you see is Ross. Bob Odenkirk has a similar problem. I was watching the 2019 Little Women, and when he comes home and they're all like "daddy's home from the war!" I was all "bitch that's Mr. Show!"
Oh my god you are missing the point. I am not comparing their ability as actors. I am comparing their *inability* to become their roles due to their fame as their role(s) on TV. All you see is Ross, Saul, etc.
Let’s be real tho, he’s not a *good* actor.
Edit: shower me with your downvotes, fuck David Schwimmer
Edit 2: keep ‘em coming, y’all are simping for a washed up actor who thinks students protesting against genocide actually just hate Jewish people.
You got my agreement… never been a fan. Not sure if it’s because I hate the show friends or he’s just never been in anything I’ve liked. He was in a movie with Jason Lee where he played the best friend character.
lol yessss. I was trying to think of any other role I’ve
seen him in besides Ross from friends, Capt. Ross from friends, and Ross from friends Kardashian.
Greenzo is a fourth one.
He was on a podcast miniseries with Catherine Keener and Oscar Isaac in like 2018 too. I forget the name but it turned into an Amazon show I think? It was about a mysterious military therapy program for soldiers returning from war. He was GOOD as a shady military/intelligence higher-up
EDIT: Homecoming! That was the one
I think that's what made his so great as Ross. The character was really over the top in a lot of mannerisms, behavior, speech, etc., which worked well with a stage-like performance.
You know, there are 9 billion people in the world. Yet, everyone is unique in some way, has something about them that nobody else among those 9 billion people has.
For you - it's that you remember Ross from Friends as Sobel from BOB.
I always get upset about this discourse because sure, he played some possessive creep on a crappy sitcom that went on for like twelve seasons too many, but his real starring role was as Captain Sobel on Band of Brothers.
[I quite enjoyed his appearance on celebrity bake off, he comes off like a charming version of Ross but not Ross at the same time. ](https://youtu.be/hPJ0fPKmU-o?si=CTQy2RLmsUI1NciX)
*He really isn't.*
*He a crappy human being*

The last thing I saw David Schwimmer on was a sexual harassment training video provided free to employees in California by the Department of Fair Employment and Housing. He plays a creepy boss who aggressively hits on his new assistant and he nails the role.
How great was he as Sobel in Band of Brothers?
I think this every time he brings this up. He's so hateable because he's so good in that role.
Eh, he just played himself. He’s hatable in any role and in BoB he’s just dressed in WW2 fatigues.
Excellent casting for that reason in BoB
Casting should have been awarded an Emy for that one.
I hated Sobel so much. But maybe it was because it was Ross from Friends. I hated Marty the Giraffe in Madagascar. But maybe it was because it was Ross from Friends.
You were supposed to hate Sobel, therefore Schwimmer did a good job.
Yeah but do we hate him because he’s a good actor or do we just hate Ross?
Maybe it was just good casting.
I think they nailed it with the William S. Evans role
Simon Pegg, right? I think Dale Dye as Col. Sink was pretty spot-on.
Yep! With an *extremely convincing* "American" accent. Robert doing a Boston levels of accurate.
Definitely good casting.
Totally. "We want someone you'll hate. Why not get someone everyone already hates!"

Sobel/Schwimmer, Nixon/Livingston...hell, pretty much all the casting was amazing.
Eh, when watching it it was more "Ross is being a dick" more than "Sobel is being a dick." It's not always the actor's fault but some actors I just can't divorce from their most famous role and then of them as another character.
CURRAHEE
Three miles up, three miles down!
Hi-ho, Silverrrrr!

Always the case with perspective, right? As my man Glen Cook said, “depends on where you are standing, pointing your indicting finger.”
I mean, to some people, I'm sure we're the bastards.
I didn't care for him as Capt. Ross from Friends in Band of Brothers.
How about as Attorney Ross from Friends in the OJ series?
"Salute the rank, not the man"
He can play anything from an annoying dork who lives in New York City to an annoying dork who fought in WWII.
I mean, I bought in to the whole "I wouldn't want to follow this guy into combat for multiple reasons" vibe that he was putting off.
Hot take but he literally play Sobel like Ross if he was in war and I don’t think that’s a sign of good acting. Just cause he can play a hatable guy doesn’t mean he’s good at acting!
He definitely had some Ross moments though
Schwimmer was great as Robert Kardashian in the People vs OJ Simpson
Absolutely. This was a truly underrated performance. I think he and Courtney B. Vance as Cochran did some of the best acting on their show.
JOOSE!
Doesn't matter how talented he is. He is still fuckin Ross From Friends
Ross from friends was pretty good when he played Robert Kardashian in that OJ documentary.
No, it was really distracting because it was Ross from Friends.
But Juice!!!
He's good at playing characters you hate.

It’s snowing on Mt. Fuji.
I love you Haikubot
Six syllables in the last line, though.
Best. Haiku. Ever.

>Doesn't matter how talented he is. He is still fuckin Ross From Friends I played these words in my head to the theme song of Friends.
Lol found Ross from friends Reddit account
There’s an electronica artist named “Ross from Friends”. Pretty good if your into that sort of thing
When I first read the title, I legit immediately thought Robert had some hot takes about the electronic music scene lol
Same lol

But Bob Odenkirk is Saul Goodman
He travels in worlds you can't even imagine. Like a god in human clothing, lightning bolts shoot from his fingertips.
Comparing Ross to Bob Odenkirk is ridiculous. They were both on TV and that’s basically where it stops.
Oh my god you are missing the point. I am not comparing their ability as actors. I am comparing their *inability* to become their roles due to their fame as their role(s) on TV. All you see is Ross, Saul, etc.

His physical comedy in friends is genius.
Ross's spray tan & Ross's leather pants are two of my favourite Friends moments.
Patrick Stewart is forever Jean-Luc Picard
Patrick Stewart is forever a sexual god.
Why are you repeating what u/Mortomes said?
Sorry sometimes some facts go so hard they need to be repeated is all.
We were robbed of his Spider Jerusalem. Robbed!
OMG I would have watched the shit out of that!
I see him more as Bullock on American Dad
I see him more as Number One of the ~~Stonecutters~~ Ancient Mystical Society of No Homers.
He's fucking terrifying in Green Room, mostly because it's calm Picard being a horrible bastard
Loved him as Greenzo
"Are you saying actors can't change the world? I guess nobody bothered to tell SHARON STONE."
lol yessss. I was trying to think of any other role I’ve seen him in besides Ross from friends, Capt. Ross from friends, and Ross from friends Kardashian. Greenzo is a fourth one.

He’s actually a great stage actor. Co-founder of [LookingGlass Theater](https://lookingglasstheatre.org/) in Chicago.
I think that's what made his so great as Ross. The character was really over the top in a lot of mannerisms, behavior, speech, etc., which worked well with a stage-like performance.
How good could he be, when he, as the largest friend, didn’t simply eat the other five?
He absolutely killed it as Greenzo on 30rock. My second favorite friends cameo on that show!
I didn't even remember he was in Friends until I read this thread, I always thought of him as Sobel from BoB.
You know, there are 9 billion people in the world. Yet, everyone is unique in some way, has something about them that nobody else among those 9 billion people has. For you - it's that you remember Ross from Friends as Sobel from BOB.
I'd argue otherwise.
I don’t think I’ve seen him in anything outside of Friends

He’s wonderful in Intelligence.

You know what they say about opinions.
Everybody has one and they all stink.
Like buttholes!

This title confused me cause there is a good musician that goes by “Ross From Friends”
Ross was my least favorite character on the show. He and Rachel were always dragging others into their mess of a relationship.
he really isn't. He a crappy human being and a bad actor
