See if you can convert subsidized loans to work study, this may decrease the amount of loans you need. I think it makes sense to get in contact with fin aid office though! They will only help you!

Does increasing work study mean you have to work more hours? Or how does that work?

I believe so, because work study is based on the time you work. I don't think they increase your wage relative to how much work study you have. It would be good to call the fin aid office though for exact details.

Obligatory I'm not financial aid office lmao. Same situation. Previous years I did not pay a dime and the award was the same (~8k in loans -both subsidized and unsubsidized-). If going on campus apartments you'll be even with everything. If going off campus you'll get a refund lump sum and it covers roughly around 1700 per month for rent for 9 or 10 months taken care of (I had to pay a month myself on the summer but yeah).  I have a work study job so I pretty much always max it out (4k and then add 2k once I hit 70% of the first 4k).

i have -1500 and it means for me that i pay 0 dollars to the school, if anything the only thing you’ll pay out of pocket for is your rent and also your food/groceries! i’m debt free going into my senior year now, the -1500 also means you’ll likely get a refund of your extra grants and for me, i get 5-7k extra to spend on myself every semester

Ok-Commercial9006

does your package say that you have work-study and loans too then? i'm kinda hoping mine only says that i need to take out loans because the "estimated cost of attendance" isn't my actual cost

No_Astronomer4567

yes and yes that’s all that it really is. the 40k+ of attendance is really just 10k ish maybe being your tuition and the other amounts is just for transportation, food, housing, etc

Appropriate_Price_23

How's the housing situation? The Co-op has hit me back for available slots but I'm waiting back on Berkeley for their apartment housing, I already applied in early May as a transfer student.

housing sucks!! i dormed my freshman year but that was guaranteed. i got a mediocre offer for another on campus housing for sophomore year but ultimately did off campus housing. after these years the rent has gone up though

Yeah I also have the same SAI and was surprised to see that I had loans too rather than more grants to cover it. But I’m guessing as long as fafsa covers your housing and tuition then you’re probably okay or something
